Interest builds around possible changes to NASCAR schedule

lmao Today is the day they are going to kill whats left of the traditional fan base.

You and I are among the few defenders of the Brickyard. By itself I don't have a problem with moving it to Independence Day weekend. The problem is that many will immediately compare it to the Daytona race that they prefer, and it will be an easy narrative to continue to bash it on that basis. Kinda like when California replaced Darlington.

I guess nobody should do anything close to the east coast for 6 months during hurricane season, for sure don't be holding any races there. o_O
The meat of hurricane season is right in that window where the regular season finale is usually held. As @KodiakRusty89 said, there are always football games postponed or outright cancelled in September/October. The idea that month 2 of hurricane season is the same as month 4 isn't true.

Snappy, you've seen how successful Throwback weekend is right? You think thats going away?? Not gonna happen.
I was being facetious.... I hope the Southern 500 is back to either Sunday afternoon or.. jump all the way in with the throwback weekend and Monday of Labor Day at High Noon which was the ultimate test of man and machine in that South Carolina heat/humidity.

They can still have the throwback weekend, just not on Labor Day weekend. (I'm not saying I want that, I think it should be a fixture - but just because they move the date doesn't mean throwback goes away). If they move it, it would probably only be to have it in the Playoffs. .

You're completely right and when no one shows up or the race gets bashed mercilessly ( remember more people now have access to social media than when Fontana took over the Labor Day date from Darlington), they'll hide behind those two reasons when they kill the date and they inevitably move it back to Daytona in 5 years or so. You and I are dying on that Brickyard/Indianapolis hill ha ha.

wow so you think they are going to move the Southern 500 date again?? I hope you're wrong!

They learned that lesson the hard way. Darlington is back where it belongs, with great crowds and new excitement every year. Even a playoff spot cant top it, now labor day as a playoff race would be huge! But for that we would need to see some double headers to bring Darlington in to the final 10

I don't actually think that - so I'm with you, I hope it stays (like I posted earlier) I thought that date was one of the few permanent fixtures on the schedule.

I was just saying if they did want to have it in the playoffs, they would have to move it. But if they did, they could still have the throwback weekend.

They might start the playoffs I would bet at Darlington on the Southern 500.

Sign me up for supporting the Brickyard. The race is awful in person but it probably gets higher ratings than any chase race. You can’t throw races like that away. If the ratings plummet I would tie a can to it in a heartbeat

Ehh Idk if TV influences as much elsewhere as they do in NASCAR. Date equity for individual events isn’t screwed up by networks anywhere else as far as I know, nor are constant format tweaks that fundamentally alter the competition aspects of the sport.

When it comes to dealing with networks or sponsors I feel Nascar is in a position of weakness.

ISM being the finale

Whelp, Pocono to host a double-header. After 30 years of attending races there the time has come. Shame...

ISM final
Daytona (2nd race) will be regular season finale
Pocono to host 'double-header'
Bristol night race moved into playoffs (will be a cutoff)
Indy - July 4 weekend
Martinsville - Mother's Day (night race)
Darlington - first race of playoffs

A cup race on Saturday and Sunday? Wow.

Four Cup races between June 21 and July 5

I live 45 minutes away! I'm not taking off an entire weekend (golf industry) to drive to the track both days. Especially to watch a neutered race distance. You think people from the Philly and NYC burbs are? This will be the end of Pocono...

Thank you NASCAR! Love Darlington in the playoffs! Martinsville at night on Mothers day! A double at Pocono! Daytona as the closer for the playoffs! Bristol as an elimination race! Indy in the heat of the summer? Might as well be there or Daytona, no diff to me.

O'Donnell mentioned on their little Youtube infomercial unveiling that they want to rotate the finale, implying ISM isn't considered a permanent fixture there.

The two week summer break is obviously being driven by NBC and the Olympics, so it'll be interesting to see if by '21 the season is ending in October without it.

They're going to be shorter races? Or do you just mean 400s instead of 500s?

Why did we move Daytona to the final race before the playoffs? Daytona doesn't need help with viewers and that final race was actually pretty exciting at Indy, esp since Indy has troubles keeping the racing interesting. Hopefully by then the high downforce package is long gone.
