Interest builds around possible changes to NASCAR schedule

I
I agree. I’ve been to the last 3 FireCracker’s and in just causally talking to the locals they are busy because the race brings in a lot of people to their bars, restaurants, beach shops, grocery stores and hotels. They honestly just don’t get it. I can’t believe they are going to screw up one of the few traditions they have left.
its mostly families that fill Daytona up during July 4th and hotels are reporting less people are here for the race in July.

Obviously, NASCAR hasn't learned from the backlash from moving the Southern 500 from it's traditional date, I guess then nothing is sacred, I expect to see the Coke 600 moved from Memorial Day Weekend too at this rate

A lot of people think Jim France walks on water but he was one of the principals that left Brian running the show. If the second Daytona date was underperforming I could see moving it but it does well overall.
The race is getting less than 60k.

Schedule the race anytime in the summer when the kids aren't in school; the same race fans will show up.
Except kids are all in school in September. So instead of having families come for the week, they'll come for a couple days.

Me included.

These changes just reinforce how much TV runs the show. The Frances and tracks have almost no say....

Yep, and that's why people will go there in early July whether there's a race or not. Schedule the race anytime in the summer when the kids aren't in school; the same race fans will show up.

What part of 'in the summer' did I misspell?

Ya know, some of us actually avoid beach vacations in the summer so we don't have to put up with the heat and other people's kids.

I’m just hoping we get a spring Sonoma race

No doubt, but Mid-West summers are not that bad IMHO. Being in Indiana and Illinois every other year, its comfortable to me without all of the sweltering humidity of Florida.

Logicstically it makes sense and costs less for teams. That will probably be the excuse to "streamline" travel. We'll see, I hope there isn't a major cluster fluff incoming...

There has been a run of Brickyard 400s where the forecast temperature was high 80s. I'm from eastern N.C. and I now live in Fort Wayne and agreed, the lack of humidity makes summers there for me a breeze, but all weather is relative. A Canadian can wear a T-shirt when it's 40 while a Floridian would be bundled up in a snowsuit.

Considering the rationale for where they moved the Brickyard 400 beginning only just last year, moving it to 4th of July weekend makes no sense.

Phoenix to the finale...is this NASCAR/ISC giving up on Homestead a bit? Remove the finale from Homestead and what special do they promote?

The idea that Daytona could use another tourist weekend is not without merit, but July 4th weekend at Daytona IS Americana. I think this is one of the few instances where tradition trumps all...and @AdoubleU24 is absolutely right about hurricane season. Can’t believe I missed that. This has major backfire potential.

Hurricane season is legit! I would never plan a trip along the Southeast coast in late August through early October. It seems like every year there's at least one weekend of college football that's affected by a tropical storm/hurricane. I was covering a game that Florence postponed last year.

And as to having a race at Daytona when the kids are in school, it doesn't seem to bother NASCAR to have a race there in February.

And start the Southern 500 at noon on Labor day. Thats a true throwback race time and date
yes sir. I miss the Southern 500 on Sunday Afternoon right before Labor day. Thats survival of the fittest right there, tests man and machine. I'd be all for the Rebel 500 coming back and two dates back at Atlanta. Then whatever else happens have at it.

While I was in Guam, I was watching the Daytona 500 at 6am. Breakfast and NASCAR is a wonderful combination.:D
Seems to agree with all those fans of the English football that NBC keeps serving up Sunday mornings. The network has build an entire marketing campaign around it. Of course, consistent start times.helps...

Regarding the Olympic breaks, I imagine this is summer only and not winter which is a lesser event and in the early months of the year the series is on Fox, but what are they going to do with those 3 races every 4th year? They have to move them somewhere.

Mind if I ask who they are? Fox and NBC reps, I'm guessing?

Yup! Both are also relatively new to their roles so they're trying to make their marks.

Bevaqua is especially known for his influence in the golf world. He's a big time mover and shaker by all accounts. A bit like former NBC exec Dick Ebersol who was like the John Wayne of sports entertainment....
