Interest builds around possible changes to NASCAR schedule

Interesting to see what happens to Dover. Used to be an awesome place until modern engineering killed it. Arguably the most boring track on the circuit right now, cars are too aero and contact sensitive, doesn’t bode well for a 1 mile high banked monster.

I’ve seen F1 tracks easier to pass on then Dover

Modern engineering has absolutely KILLED NASCAR. I’m glad somebody said it.

Dover looks fun to attend in person.

I wouldn't be surprised if North Wilkesboro fits into the puzzle somewhere.
There’s rumors on Twitter tonight that screenshots leaked showing potential 2023 NASCAR schedules and Wilkesboro is on it. I’m trying to find them myself but no luck thus far.

I have a feeling this LA Coliseum deal is gonna become a little more permanent than expected. Especially if ACS doesn’t get reconfigured and simply gets upstaged.

The old Denver GP configuration, if it’s still viable, doesn’t look half bad. Looks like the corners weren’t as narrow as other street courses.
I can’t imagine them heading out to California twice. So do you think if the Coliseum is successful, it cannibalizes Fontana? I can’t imagine that place being dumped and left to wither away like Chicagoland, Kentucky and now, potentially Dover

IMO Dover’s fate is sealed.

Chicagoland is done for and NASCAR is exploring a street course race in Chicago. Of course they’d dump Fontana to go to Fake Bowman Gray. Nothing is off the table with the Jim France regime.

Found this tweet funny:

There are rumors refusing to die that NASCAR wants to start the season with a west coast swing before going to Daytona. Anyone who thinks this wouldn’t hurt ratings, especially when they have the Arizona Bowl, is naive. There may be precedent for not going to Daytona first, but “it’s the first race of the year and the biggest race” has been a marketing strategy for the 500 for decades.

They turned the Brickyard 400, a Crown Jewel event and a ratings behemoth into another road course race and turned Daytona in July to Wisconsin in July.

This isn't anything new, Nascar went to Riverside before Daytona for years.

Ok sure.
We are going to have our most successful year on television than we've had in a long, long time

I'll inquire with someone tomorrow. He's never failed me on the rumor end and he told me about Road America moving to July 4th a year before it was announced

Deathbedders rejoice

Catchy, save that for next year ;)
This will be my default response for the rest of my life whenever NASCAR cites Fan Council data. In fact, this forum should have a feature that shows this screenshot every time the words “fan council” appear, sort of like Twitter has to do with Marjorie Three Names tweets.

Exactly. And while people argue that Daytona is not the historical first race of the season, more seasons have now started at Daytona (oval or road) than other tracks.
What does that have to do with tea in China? So we have done the same ol same ol for years, fans are clamering for schedule changes, so lets not change anything?

you do it bud, good luck , you'll show em

Actually it would be 3 times counting Sonoma. NHRA comes out west 3 times a year and they are not as big as NASCAR. In fact they are here right now for the World Finals this weekend.

Some things don’t need to be changed and shouldn’t be changed.

At this point, it would be like moving the Indianapolis 500 to the third week in June just for the hell of it.

Eh...I don't entirely agree. Tradition has to begin somewhere and a June Indy 500 might be better. Would I dislike such a change? Absolutely. But at the end of the day, the on-track product is what really matters

The fans want more short tracks. NASCAR responds by giving us more road courses, fake road courses, two new <1-mile tracks, and the one new short track that was a slam dunk guarantee is now being taken away from us.
You nailed it. NASCAR is experiencing a mid-life crisis after a messy divorce and they're going on a "find myself" spree, if you know what I mean. The next few years will be interesting but I do believe they will find themselves and better the sport in every way

That is your opinion but: Ben Kennedy says

“As we look to the schedule in 2022, going to the L.A. Coliseum to kick off our debut with our Next Gen car as a proof point, frankly, to we’re going to be bold in what we’re doing, whether it’s the schedule or the car—all of it—we’re going to take calculated risks.”

yep and it worked

Growth in attendance, fueled by imaginative scheduling, has paralleled the increase in television share. Phelps said every NASCAR-owned track, with the exception of Darlington, showed an increase in per-event attendance over 2019—and Darlington added a race in 2021.

They used to go to California three times a year. 🤷🏻‍♂️
I meant going there (Cali) 2-3 times a year for two different tracks. That wasn’t clear on my initial post. Maybe they will what do I know. They went two times for Fontana and a race in Sonoma in the mid 2000’s

Yep

Literally no one is asking for the Daytona 500 to be moved
Eh let’s move everything around just for the sake of it. Tradition be damned. Nothing would surprise me at this point

What I’m saying is, I could see the LA Coliseum eventually replacing Fontana.

Again, nothing is off the table.

Their biased Fan Council and 15 new viewers on NBC one week says everything’s great.

Sure doesn't sound like it according to Phelps

What we know as the two-mile racetrack where we’re going to race next year, we’re selling some land around that. There are entitlements to it that no one really cares about, but we’ve got to make sure those things get done so we then can take the next steps to build that short track.

Lets face it. It's a tough time for deathbedders, they work hard, but there just isn't much to carp about. There is always the 550 package, really stale bread though. Maybe they will be able to find something about the new car with it being the first year version and all.

And here we are, seeing it being discussed.

I can’t wait to see how the question about moving the Daytona 500 is written to the Fan Council.

At least it would sadly be more grounded in reality than their recent question about racing manned drones.

Phelps could tell me its cold outside and I’d put on shorts and a t-shirt.

Deathbedder have to reach for something, make a rumor, something. The 500 is where it has always been
