Interest builds around possible changes to NASCAR schedule

I found this from 1996 about changes to the schedule. This was about North Wilkesboro and the direction Nascar was going.

its almost as if they predicted the future...... I might watch an old Wilkesboro race today since my favorite team the Dallas Cowboys dont have a shot to make the playoffs and my Chicago Bears are eliminated as well. Might cue up the 1988 Rudd vs Earnhardt double spin.

I really hope Portland International Raceway makes it onto the top 3 schedules.

I say put a dirt track on the schedule. Let's see these drivers tear it up in the mud!

They have to go to single file restarts on dirt. Eldora has been a **** show as of late because it’s so hard to line cars up during cautions due to the sliding and wide racing

To be honest, I think dirt should be a Truck Series only thing. I love dirt racing and all, but the Cup Series has been an asphalt only series for almost 50 years now, running asphalt exclusively isn't the problem with the schedule. The problem is too many mile and a half intermediate tracks.

Failing that, I do think the Truck Series needs to go back to being basically it's own thing among the NASCAR national touring series, and not a glorified development series like it has become. It was arguably at it's best when it was a largely short track series. Running dirt gives the series a unique identity that Cup and Xfinity don't have.

Also, for many of the Truck Series drivers, Eldora is their Daytona 500

Pretty obvious that his point was that Gateway does not have unique advantage. It certainly hasn't helped Kentucky's crowds.
Again, it does have a unique advantage that Kentucky doesn't. It's in a major metropolitan area, only about 15 minutes away from downtown St. Louis and a market that supports the hell out of auto racing. St. Louis in general is a great sports town.

And Kentucky is 25 minutes from Cincinnati

Charlotte has a 'new' track 15 minutes from a major city in a racing-savvy town and can't sell out the Roval. Anyone have the figures for Joliet or Kansas? I'm pretty sure they're well under 80K and don't fill the seats for Chase races, even after Kansas added a casino.

Bristol used to have a waiting list for 160K out in the middle of nowhere. Times have changed.

I think people are gonna be really disappointed at the 2021 schedule besides maybe a Gateway midweek race and a Bristol spring for Nashville swap if it gets rebuilt quick enough which I doubt.

:XXROFL:

I didn't watch the whole thing but do yourselves a favor: Start at 10:40 and watch for 30 seconds. That's some serious one-handed driving! 22:50 will demonstrate why Mountain Dew and golf carts don't mix.

I’d so be excited for 2 Atlanta races...only if.....they go back to the old configuration. A late spring night race and a late round play off race would be okay with me

Maybe take one back away from Texas?
R you crazy? :D Texas and Kansas pull more in the stands than most of them on the East coast or the rust belt do. I wonder if SMI has bought up property around the track and is looking to imitate Kansas

Is there ANY evidence that having a casino helps races attendance? I would tell Atlanta and SMI that when you consistently sell out the race you HAVE, then another race would be considered. Frankly, the idea of adding a second race to ANY track is a step in the WRONG direction.

you obviously don't gamble

With most tracks rightsizing it looked to me Atlanta did a decent job of drawing people last year. Not sure if it warrants a 2nd date over Gateway, Nashville Fairgrounds (if built) but it's SMI politics.

There are a lot of "if's" to go yet for anything to happen along those lines, but SMI spending a billion bucks on a resort is an eye opener.
