One thing is for sure. If I ever heard Gordon say he sandbagged at the end to salvage the race car instead of going for a win, I'd be shook to the core.
It wouldn't have mattered if Jr had kept his mouth shut or not. It wasn't like anyone watching couldn't see what was happening.
Jr was leading the outside line when a car jumped in front of him. Jr then pulled out of line and let the entire field pass him by so he could take up his position about 500 feet behind the entire field.
Jr took a dive.
One thing NASCAR is lousy at is analyzing their rule changes for unintended consequences. I mean really, somebody should have seen this sort of thing coming. Granted, Jr. should have just kept his pie hole shut.
I predict that teams like Kez and Joey are going to try to win every race and screw the rest. Teams that get close to the end of the cut off are going to try by hook or crook to get all their drivers in. Gibbs is going to give Kenseth all the breaks, Hendrick will too with two shy right now. More drama to come, just like they do in Formula 1, team orders I bet when it gets close to cut off time, maybe sooner. I bet Jr wouldn't have been 500 feet behind the pack with 6 to go if he wasn't already in.

I actually thought that the new Chase might work out to be really cool, but now I worry that they may have missed something.

You could be right, but I saw an interview with Gibbs and he said that he was really sweating it with two out of it and what a relief it was with Denny winning. He more of less said that Matt was going to get their best efforts. so I am guessing Danny and Kyle will be practicing with different setups and sharing it with the 20 car. All of the teams are short on setup info with the zero height change this year.I was kind of hoping that ALL the drivers try to win every race
that is incorrect info you have there. If you notice the remaining drivers get their points reset after each elimination, so they all start out even.I'm thinking one thing nascar missed was that deciding the series champion from a single race is absurd.

After Richmond, the field will be whittled down via a series of eliminations — a NASCAR first. After every three Chase races, four drivers will be cut.
The first three races of the Chase (27-29) will be known as the Challenger Round with drivers eliminated Sept. 28 at Dover International Speedway. The 12 drivers remaining will have points reset to 3,000.
Races 30-32 will be known as the Contender Round with drivers eliminated Oct. 19 at Talladega Superspeedway. The eight drivers remaining will have their points reset to 4,000.
Races 33-35 will be the Eliminator Round, with the four remaining drivers having their points reset to 5,000. To reach the final four, drivers will be eliminated at the penultimate race at Phoenix International Raceway on Nov. 9.
That will leave four drivers still eligible for the championship during the Nov. 16 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Whoever finishes highest among the four title-eligible drivers is NASCAR's new champion. Bonus points will not be awarded in the finale.
Guys! I got the best idear for a new new new new chase format! what if... and bare with me here... We take like the top 46-47 drivers in points after the first race and we have a chase that lasts for like say 36 races or so and at the end of that chase the driver with the best average throughout those races wins the chase! Wouldn't that be so epic??? I know its CRAAAAZZYYY and its probably a little too outside the box for nascar.
looks like ten races to me with the last race having the four left going for the championship...it is stick n ball dude. They have been watching that format for years, but Nascar one ups them with four cars instead of two teams. I wonder if they will have a half time show.
Never saw it coming? Hell, I predicted that winning drivers would experiment & slack off as the season progressed & it would conflict with the 100% rule but NASCAR won't do dick**** about it, when the original thread for the new chase discussion appeared.Great post right here. Think Brian sitting around in his pull ups playing Hotwheels with Helton. Never saw it coming.
So the champion is decided in 11 of the 36 races? Win 1 and be the best for the final 10. That's like saying the 5-11 team won the Super Bowl. Win 1 game to get into the playoffs and then win 4 more to win the Super Bowl. It's absurd.that is one way of looking at it. Series champion survived the other nine races and won the tenth is another way. So acting like the winner is going to win by a fluke by winning only one race isn't realistic, they will have to run good for ten races, better then the other three in the last race.
I don't believe that all of the drivers that win will do so, especially teams that have everybody in, they are going to try to win all they can to eliminate their competition.Never saw it coming? study it a little harder. Win one is to get into the elimination races. then you have to keep ahead of the others to survive all the elimination races and be one of the final four to be in the running for the championship..So the champion is decided in 11 of the 36 races? So the browns win one game & then win their final 4 playoff games and now they are crowned national champions.study it a little harder. So far, not 1 driver has shown dominance over the sport this year. Several drivers are having an amazing start. They are championship worthy so far. Edwards has won 1 race and ain't done **** anywhere else. Same with Kurt Busch. Junior ******* throttled back to save money. They are not championship worthy - but yet their names are already in the pot. It ain't right.
I want my champion to be the driver who scored the most points for 100% of the season. Not 30.5% of it.

Like I said earlier in this thread Jr was looking at the big picture, I think he feels this year is his best chance to win a championship. Come Homestead I bet Jr will be in this insane final 4 and have a great shot at winning it all. There comes a time when there is no need to push the issue, I think Jr. saw that Sunday.NO, he DIDN"T TRY....that is my gripe......

So acting like the winner is going to win by a fluke by winning only one race isn't realistic, they will have to run good for ten races, better then the other three in the last race. If you remember the last couple of years, the winner only had to finish for the most part to win, so they rode around the last race. The chances of that happening with four drivers all going for it the last race are better odds for a good race.
BUT - little Bobby said the majority of fans no longer like plate races, so he HAS to be right!
Short tracks and road courses get some of the worst ratings but plate tracks get tons of viewers. I guess that tells you all you need to know about the average NASCAR follower.
of course it is manufactured drama, like the old chase wasn't? and stick n ball playoffs aren't? what's your point? Like you have never seen a stick n ball team lay down when they had a playoff berth clinched? So they now have home field advantage if they keep trying. Jr's in and IMO he isn't worried about losing his ride or his sponsor so I will be surprised if he does much until the elimination rounds. So you basically admit that it's manufactured drama?
