Just hung up with Kurt, bare with me on this:
"I want to be remembered as a champion driver," he said.
I asked Kurt to clarify, does that mean he won't be back in NASCAR because that sounds a little like a goodbye.
"I'm considering all of my options. There's plenty of time to figure that all out," he said.
So are things outside of NASCAR a possibility for Kurt?
"The NHRA or Kimmel street stock ... that's where I had the smile on my face."
But before we assume Kurt is going to look at other series, he did note:
"I've got a past champions provisional."
Penske's Bud Denker: Hornish not a candidate for the 22. "Our intentions are to run Sam for the Nationwide championship. It would be haphazard to just put Sam in the 22 right now. Everyone saw him at Phoenix, he got his feet back."
Denker on Ragan: "We are just starting the evaluation process. We’re getting a lot more calls today a lot of people are raising their hand.”
Denker on Kurt: "He was not fired. This is a process that began several weeks ago as we discussed concerns both sides had moving forward."
Was the homestead situation the reason he left?
“No. We had our concerns and he had his, and it was time for us to separate."
So why today announcement?
"We had respect for Tony and NASCAR in respect to the banquet. We made it this date for the respect."

Watching Kurts video, and remembering how pumped he was going into the chase, only to have the Penske cars faulter again, I believe this is how it really went down. I think he lost faith that he would ever bee competitive in the chase with Penske. Put together with the fact that the bigs from Shell didn't sit at his table, the decision was made before the banquet.
