NASCAR considering radical changes to playoff system

The timing of all this is a little questionable too...this all got leaked this weekend, which coincided nicely with the AFC-NFC Championship games in the NFL. And the "formal" announcement is supposed to come at the end of the month, which oh so coincidentally lines up with Super Bowl week. Seems like there's a certain degree of "look at me" to this while everyone is focused on the NFL. Give it up, Brian.

I've stopped watching most of NASCAR already, mainly because of the chase. A championship under the chase doesnt mean nearly as much as a championship under the old system. This system will be even worse.

I always tune into the Daytona 500 or a few races throughout the year, if this goes down, then I'm 100% done.

I'll never watch another race as long as the proposed format is used.

Something to ponder...

If this system were in place last year, David Ragan, whose Talladega win was his only top-10 in the first 26 races, would have finished 15th in points. Tony Stewart, who missed 15 races, would have finished 16th in points. Brad Keselowski, who started every race, had a win, 9 top-5s, and 16 top-10s, would have finished 17th in points.

I think the flaws in this format are glaringly obvious.

I want whatever they're smoking in Daytona Beach.

I've had a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach ever since the news broke, if it goes through.. I don't know how I'll handle the cheapened season and Fox Knob slobbering regarding the format.

Honestly, if they go through with this, I may just be done with NASCAR. I'll patrons the short track and regional racing series, but NASCAR isn't getting another red cent from me if they do this.

Racing is still racing. I'll be there watching. I don't like the changes but I don't look at this as being any more drastic than the original change to the Chase format. Once that change happened all NASCAR Championships from that point on had an asterisk in my book anyhow. Now, I'll just have to add a second one. This most recent change will definitely add more excitement to the Chase but it'll do nothing for the product as a whole.

While at it, NASCAR should have a 15 minute halftime break. Before the restart, they should invert the field but let the fans vote on how many cars get inverted during halftime. Then, with 10 laps to go, throw a caution and let the fans decide on an invert again.

They've done something like that at the all star race.

I reserve the right to wait and see. This may very well be the last straw with me.
I'll probably still watch, at least through the summer. I'm not really much of an MLB or NBA fan, so NASCAR is pretty much all I have in the spring and summer months sportswise. I'll probably tune out NASCAR completely once the NFL season starts though. I may watch Martinsville and Talladega, but that would be about it. I can't see why I would immerse myself in the Chase when the championship isn't really going to mean anything.

Also, this Chase needs a rule that states that one of the four playoff spots in the championship race gets to be voted on.

Before the final restart, they can change the course and make the drivers run the infield road course instead of the regular oval.

Or maybe, all the drivers get out of their cars and NASCAR does a lottery to determine which car the driver will get in for the finish of the race.

It's going to be a shame to see all you folks leave the sport. On the bright side the line at the restroom and concession stand will be much shorter. They'll probably do another seat change at the tracks and make them even wider. This just may not be all that bad at all.

There's that "I reserve the right" clause again.

Great idea, I was thinking just do a burnout and doughnut exhibition and then just have a winner picked out from a lottery ball hopper thing.

I think they should get away from stupid schemes to artificially make things more excititing with this playoffs (Chase) thing. It's the dumbest thing to have a points system that has a playoffs type scheme yet has other cars that aren't in the "playoffs" still participating. I think they should do what F1 does. Award points for the top X (10 in F1, but maybe 15 or 20 in NASCAR) positions and no points for those below it. That way you really have to be the best driver all year. No shenanigans, just racing.

And then, instead of qualifying or heat races, we can just have a lottery to determine the starting lineup.

No no no ... the starting lineup should be put of to a fan vote as well. After all, NASCAR seems to be letting fans vote for anything these days (except for the championship points system that nobody wants).

trying to encourage winning races? win one race and you are in the chase, so it will be like year before last at Daytona when Johnson won the first heat race and rode around in the back of the pack until the shootout race. So every week the previous weeks winner would join he other race winners at the back and they would ride around and wave at each other. Good thinkin Bri. Take another hit will ya.

Yeah, somehow their "extensive fan research" always seems to completely whiff on making decisions about the championship format.

Was listening to Dave Moody on Sirius Speedway a little bit ago. The same guy who has spent the last 3 years beating it into listeners heads how awesome the current Chase format is and trying his best to publicly humiliate any caller who dared argue otherwise. Today? Basically, the current Chase format is flawed and the new one is going to be so much better. What a damn hypocrite.

I got to where I couldn't listen to the Nascar channel morning show. If it wasn't the announcer stirring up something it was a fan..all they did was argue. Buddy Baker used to be good though in the afternoons.

He's one of those who just says what he's told to say. Sorta like the Waltrip brothers.

I wrote off the morning guys the day after the 2012 Daytona 500. That was Danica's first Cup start, and a lot of the listeners were calling in to comment on the excessive amount of media coverage Danica got that weekend. Some callers were joking about her performance in that race, to which one of them replied "she finished better than Jimmie Johnson!" (JJ was caught up in a Lap 2 wreck and finished 42nd, a wreck Danica also happened to be involved in). When pressed if they really thought Danica was a better driver than JJ, one of the hosts replied "in this particular race, she was!". That kinda summed up for me how much credibility they have.

You mean Charlotte, right? Wasn't that the All-Star race? Regardless, I agree 100% with what you're saying.

I definitely stand with those of you in the 80% who think that this proposed championship format is a complete and utter farce. I have nothing to add to what the majority of you have already expressed so passionately. I don't think I've ever liked so many posts in a single thread before. LOL.

yeah that's the one. What is missed is that the author didn't name anyone in the article but "reliable sources". Nothing happens to these guys that tweet or twit or publish anything that a person can confirm as truth or rumor. So the article can be pure B.S. hearsay and nothing happens to the goof that wrote it. But it is interesting to see all of the threatening to leave the fanbase, about as truthful as this article, they aren't going anywhere.:)
