Phoenix Pre-race Race Thread

Couldn't disagree more. Especially MRN but both MRN and PRN have, by far, the best NASCAR announcing teams in the business. They always have been the best IMO and they are far from being unknowledgeable in this sport.
Agreed, I love listening to MRN at the race or at home when TV commentating gets old.

Morning in Phoenix.

I was wondering about the clumsy wording for the thread title.

Does "Phoenix Pre-race Race Thread" mean you've staked your claim to both the pre-race and the race threads?

I thought the title describes the thread rather well. Do you find the title that confusing? I just though it would be cool to talk about the race in advance of race day. If the worst complaint that you have about me is my grammar, I can accept that.

No, I'll leave the regular race thread up to all of you. I don't participate in them very much once the green is thrown. I'm too busy watching the race.

This is why I mute the volume on the TV and then delay the DVR so the radio audio lines up with the video. I love listening to Moody et al call a race.

Why so crotchety?

I listened to them for years when I drove my big truck over the road, I'll take Mike, DW/Larry Mac, Jeff, Dale Jarrett, Rusty, you name it, over that screaming Moody and Bagley cluster. Don't have any problem listening to Barney and the pit guys, but it is good not to have to take a couple aspirin for my headache after the race.

Joey Logano is going to be one to watch this weekend. In 8 cup races he has 2 DNF's (Engine and Gordon last fall). Two 21st place finishes(in his rookie season). And 4 finishes of 11th or better with a best finish of 3rd(2010). Also he has said a few times the gen 6 car feels like a 2012 NNS car. He won in Phoenix NNS last fall(among many others). Just sayin. You guys still have a bit of time to jump on the Logano bandwagon before you look like you're just following the winners.

And he was running 5th or 6th when Gordon wigged out last year.

I'm on the bandwagon , I think he will show a huge improvement this year . But I don't know when he will start winning some races and I won't be using him as one of my picks till he does. Course I'm not very high in the pool either.

I used to love being high in the pool. It didn't hurt as much when I fell down. ;)

Yeah plus the one DNF he would have had a top 5 or maybe even 3 last fall at Phoenix. Ive been rooting for Logano since 2009 and I really think he'll start winning soon. Not only winning but becoming more consistent. I keep going back to him saying numerous times that he feels the new Gen 6 car is a lot like the 2012 Nationwide car. I mean come on the guy won NINE TIMES last season. Thats not luck, or equipment, kid can drive! And he's only 22! No one else has put up numbers like that by that age. There was an article something like Kyle vs Joey first 100 starts. Joeys numbers are way better! I'll admit I am biased when I talk about Joey but I see more all the time that makes me think he's breaking out soon. Did you see the moves he was making at the end of the 500? Didnt end up well but he showed balls making those moves everyone else was afraid to. He keeps the attitude and confidence Ive seen in him lately and I guarantee you'll be picking him for your fantasy roster soon enough! Then you can get high in the pool again. LOL

I think Joey getting away from JGR and partnering up with proven winners Penske and Keselowski is going to be really beneficial for him.

I couldn't agree more. He was being held back for some reason. He has more talent than he showed with JGR. Although Denny Hamlin clearly showed how much of a Joey fan he is this week. Im sure that kind of thing doesnt help. Just the confidence alone from having the champ want you as his team mate should help him out. Look at Kyle Busch for instance. Spent years driving the 5 for Hendrick, one of the top teams if not the top team, and underperformed. I think he only won 2 or 3 races there and since his move to JGR in 2008 now has 24 or 25 career wins. Sometimes its just a matter of the people around you. Joey is free from the unreal expectations of him to live up to Tony Stewart's career as a 19 year old. He's older, more experienced, more confident, and has a positive attitude coupled with a strong desire to win. I believe he will become a chase regular and perennial title contender in no time.

I've said it since his move, Joey will quickly blossom into a chase regular.

I remember many a time during a NW or cup race hearing Denny or Kyle tell their spotter to 'tell Joey' to do this or that on the track to help them out. He gave up a win at Martinsville in 2010 so Denny could get to the bottom on a late restart. He really didn't want to, but Hamlin ran over his front end and won the race with Joey second. Those 2 twits would have no problem getting out of their car and trashing a teammate that didn't think of their needs first.

I don't think there was much "team" spirit when he was at Gibbs. I don't think "team players" when it comes to Hamlin or Bush. I bet he does better under the Penske flag. Not changing the subject (but I am kinda), on the other end of the swap, I think Matt Kenseth was tired of racing for Rousch so moving into the Gibbs car might be a good move...if they can keep the Toyota's from blowing up

I think it was a toxic environment for Joey there. Kyle Busch was often in NASCAR's doghouse and Denny Hamlin is passive-aggressive and obviously didn't like Joey that much (see the Twitter comments). Not exactly the best mentors especially when you're still basically a teenager.

Proven winners? Sure they won the cup last year but Gibbs is the better overall team. Hamiln has been so close to the title, Kyle can win any race... if Anything, Logano was holding the team back. I root for the kid, he's from my homestate but come on.

I have to agree, Penske has done much better in other forms of auto racing, but if you narrow it down to just Nascar, Penske has only won one title. They did pretty good with Rusty, fair with Kurt, but no titles. Gibbs has less history by far, no titles, but I bet they won more races in the time they have been in the sport.

Didn't Gibbs win 2 titles with Tony?

I am pulling for Piquet jr. Yeah I know...I'm wierd. His Dad was a formula 1 driver back in the day when it was a blood sport, and his son Jr. got a raw deal when he was in Formula 1. Piquet Jr. did pretty good in the trucks, drove a clean race and finished well, so now he has moved up to Nationwide. Guys like this to me are an indicator of just how good the Nascar series is. Most of the top drivers in the world that come from other forms of racing try to compete in Nascar don't do that well. That is proof that the drivers in Nascar are the best in the world...Now if A.J will win the Indianapolis 500 and beat all the foreigners.

Not saying JGR isn't a winning team (although I can see how it might have read like that). It is, but Penske is too and the team environment and atmosphere is probably better for Joey.

I would agree that a change in scenery would be better for Joey at least mentally but while Penske has been successful, it's not really had more then one driver be that good ever since Newman left the 12. Whereas Gibbs has had Hamiln, Busch all contending for the title.

On that count I agree. It seems like they've had high turnover recently with Hornish, Busch, and Allmendinger for multiple reasons.
