Random NASCAR Stuff to talk about.....

NASCAR won't need restrictor plates at Pocono: Lap times are wicked fast at Pocono Raceway since the 2.5-mile track was repaved last year. However, Robin Pemberton, NASCAR's vice president of competition, doesn't anticipate the need for restrictor plates this weekend. On Thursday, drivers flirted with a total lap speed of 180 mph and cars topped 212 mph entering Turn 1 at Pocono Raceway during the second day of testing. "No, absolutely not," Pemberton said of the prospect of implementing restrictor plates. "We're well within reason here. Average speed is going pretty good, so we're happy. There's a lot of grip here, so there's no reason for that." #11-Denny Hamlin and Pemberton expect the track qualifying record of 172.533 mph set by Kasey Kahne in 2004 to be obliterated Saturday. Pemberton predicted the time will be at least two seconds faster. Kahne led all drivers in Thursday's test session with a top lap of 179.490 mph. And Hamlin, one of the first drivers to experiment with tandem drafting at restrictor-plate track Talladega Superspeedway, anticipates some form of drafting down the straightaway at Pocono. He also believes the corners will be treacherous. However, the latest wrinkle - the distance of Sunday's race was changed from 500 miles to 400 - could have the greatest effect of all.(Fox Sports)(6-8-2012)

So sorry. One year I went to TMS and the Sunday date was rained out. I had no choice but to fly back to SoCal on Monday Morning. I remember sitting in the DFW airport bar and watching on TV when the green flag waved. It was so wrong...

I feel your pain, ND!

Ouch. I had that feeling when I didn't go to the Texas race last fall since I live less than 45 mins away.

I was at the race that was postponed to Monday a few years ago. It was strange seeing the main stands empty on what was supposed to be a race day. At one point before the announcement, I counted about a dozen people (not an exaggeration!!!) on the main frontstretch stands. (I was on the backstretch). Fortunately I was able to return on Monday.

We got rained out at Chicago last fall. Luckily I was able to check the radar on my phone and see how bad it looked. We left the track at noon and arrived at home 4 hours later. They ended up calling the race at 8:00pm. I learned my lesson regarding out of town races and now I book my room so that I stay in the hotel on Sunday night (or Saturday for a Saturday night race) which keeps me in town if they run the next day. It sucked being stuck with those nice tickets.

It's being reported that Danica's merchandise hauler has been involved in a wreck. I don't know if this pic is real or photoshopped.

Word is, Sam Hornish was moonlighting for ELM transportation.

That sure looks photoshopped to me, or it's a bad phone pic.

Jeff Gluck confirmed that it's real and that Danica was driving. She was not injured but was ticketed for simultaneously driving in both lanes.

Being reported.....

POCONO: drivers shifting at least 4 times a lap, so crews are worried about transmissions. changing out a lot of them right now...

Confirmed: Danica's merchandise hauler did wreck. Can't confirm the authenticity of this photo which is circulating.

also...

Jeff Gordon just went to bat for @bobpockrass in a huge, huge way. As strong as Stewart’s comments were, Gordon just said the opposite.

Hmm he either really likes Danica, or really hates Danica.

Seeing as they still haven't worked in more than one groove @ Pocono, how much passing do you think there's going to be? From what I've been reading this is shaping up to be a disaster. I hope that's not the case. I was looking forward to this first 400 mile race there. Now?

I don't think we'll see much passing. One lane, aero push, high speeds......doesn't hold much room for passing. Restarts should be interesting though.

Restarts @ Pocono always are IMO. Always a cool shot looking back from turn one at the five wide action. I agree about the lack of passing though and way to fast for a bump and run.

Holy smoke are these cars crabbing down the straightaway!

When the front end is running the line it looks like the back is 10 inches or more off of that same line.

I thought that teams lined up in the garage based on points? Stewart and Biffle aren't close in points but their cars are beside one another in that shot above.

Not NASCAR but still POCONO: half the ARCA field has never raced here before. Fastest car, Brennan Poole, is more than 30mph quicker than slowest.

Ruetti was 18th fastest in the 51 after the first practice, says he's comfy in the car now and is gonna pick it up for the second practice.

He was also overheard saying "dang" on the scanner, possible penalties coming later.

Maybe not news but:

20 lap old tires are faster than new tires, so expect road course pit strategies. As soon you reach your window get enough gas to finish, should be able to stay on the lap at Pocono.

Based on listening to a Bifle interview today.

Sounds pretty nasty to me, all those cars going into turn one over 210. How fast are they in the draft?

The previous year's champ always gets the first garage stall.

Up until 1998 or so they also used to get the first pit stall every week. That changed when the Earnhardt fans started whining that Gordon was getting to much of an advantage.

That's very funny Matt , some of the young people like Fender might believe that .:D

This smooth surface is really allowing them to seal these cars down all around the track. Sealed to the track=aero push. The only cure for that is multiple grooves. Hopefully a second groove comes in or we may potentially see a near caution free race where the winner leads 150 of 160 laps.

In that case, please tell him NO EFFEN PLATES!!

Thank you.
I don't think he likes me anyway . Once , at a race , we were in a sports bar having a few beers and ended up seated at the bar beside Randy and Robin ; what with the beers and all , I didn't once get the names Robin ,Randy and Ryan correct . At first they tried to correct me , then they just ignored me . How stupid is that .to name your kids confusing names like those ?

I was just going off of what my cousin heard from the sister of a lady who heard from the aunt of a guy who used to work with someone who lived by a lady who cleaned Bill France Jr's neighbor's house.
Your cousin isn't Andy, right? o_O

That kind of stuff sounds like some of the things that I've heard him say about Earnhardt.

Ah, and then it goes by standings...hence, Stewart and then Biffle. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

That lady that cleans Bill France Jr's house is my sisters BFF's next door neighbor.

Man, it really is a small world. ;)
