Every NASCAR fan should be required to learn about pre-1970s NASCAR point systems. The amount of bitching about the playoffs would stop if fans had to try to decipher some of these systems.


Imagine having to check the purse or length of the points in order to calculate the points payout. The 1972-1973 system looks like a pain in the ass.

Imagine having to check the purse or length of the points in order to calculate the points payout. The 1972-1973 system looks like a pain in the ass.
The early 1970s points systems were probably not bad at the time considering that back then the leader was often the only car on the lead lap and less than half the cars finished every race. These systems certainly were meant to reward reliability and consistency, unlike the playoffs.
