No ........ SOME people are screaming to change a simple common sense rule. Elliot made a boo boo, he will live to race and perhaps manipulate a restart of his own one day.

Maybe I'm just missing the whole importance of the call to change this rule? I just don't get the problem here. Rules are broken week in and week out. Some are the same rules over and over again. This rule seems to seldom come into play yet now it's of major concern. In another week this call to change the restart rule will be a distant memory I'm figuring. I only wish there would have been half this concern when the Chase was implemented.

I recall the bully in the 4 car wrecking most of the field while manipulating a resart

NASCAR should learn from Indy car and just let the start be a free for all  ......... until Elliot gets a penalty from that procedure

I'm gonna sum it up- The car who won the Pole is the leader and has the RIGHT to start the race, the nose of his car will be the first one to cross the START line regardless! If the outside pole guy went 2 tenths before and got a 1 foot lead, even if the lead car "spun his tires" its a violation. Everyone in the garage knows this and its why you virtually never see this call. Almost never! We have years of videos on the start of the races and its pretty much a non issue, UNTIL Chase Elliott did it and the crowd goes wild. I dont have a thing against Chase, great driver no doubt but he broke the rule. Even his in car radio he said well ok but Blaney spun the tires. This was a high speed rolling start and at no time was there any danger of stacking up the feild. None. Chase knows it. Non issue. Next

Can you provide us with the wheelspin data from the 12 car ? because I am not so sure that it happened.

No sir.The Data is provided real time on FanView though, the same the officials look at, live during the race. No secrets.

    not

I will have to check it out, I have a suspicion that Blaney is the culprit that caused the chosen ones problem. Specifically, I think it was the driver of the 12 cars right foot that did the deed ... not by being pushed too far, but by being released a bit too much at a critical time.

The drivers at the back were really pissed because now Chase will race them. :sarcasm:

I agree for the most part. My complaint remains the rules don't treat starts and restarts the same way. I wouldn't mind seeing changes made to how both happen - cone, Jersey, whatever, but at least eliminate the differences.

Why?? The start of the race happens only once and the pole sitter has earned the right to be the first driver at the "Start Line" Every restart after that, the leader has the right to "Go" anywhere in the start box. Cars that jump the start get penalized. Cars second on back cross the start line a hair behind the leader.
I think both rules as well a the rule "you can't change lanes until you cross the line" is also a good rule. It helps prevent the 36 th place car from going 12 wide before the race is even started.
You know there are idiots that would try that.

Why not? Why have the box at all? If the pole sitter has the right to be the first driver over the S/F line (something I'm not debating), why shouldn't the leader on a restart have the same right at the line? Why have what is effectively one line at the start and a different line for restarts? Use the S/F line for everything, starts and restarts, and drop the box entirely.

Interesting thread. After reading through it what makes sense to me is to have the procedure for starting and restarting the race the same and have a green light illuminate when everyone can mash the gas.

Kevin Harvick explained it like this, The Start of the Race is a procedure, the Pole winner is expected to cross the line first, the race isnt to the Starting line, its from the Starting line to the first turn. The leader spinning his tires is no excuse and its an easy call for NASCAR. After that all restarts are a race, when the leader accelerates after entering the re start zone then its a race and doesnt matter who crosses the line first. I think that explains it much better then I did.

  16. I’ve seen pretty much every race for the past 20 years and I don’t recall a single time this happening.

Not saying it didn’t, just that I don’t recall. Can’t believe it’s an issue. I guess it’s the hen’s teeth factor making it a big deal.

I guess they can drop a tree on the straight and go when the green comes on, but there would still be some red lighting. I've seen single file sprint car starts and the leader has a three or four car jump on second passing the starter stand and they let it go..same thing goes for this, let it go, it's racing it isn't perfect.

I mean, honestly why not just start the race at the starting line? If it's the STARTING line, shouldn't the cars START there?? Like honestly, starting back off turn 4, is stupid if it's not even really the start? I mean what if the leader just for some reason stops?(not likely to happen.) would everyone need to just stop also?

Question 1. We do. Question 2. We do. Question 3. Its not, its a restart. 4. The leader never stops, he might pedal but he will never stop.

we don’t? They start going off turn 4??? Why not just have them do that, but at the starting one?? They do that on the STARTS also. The second that green waves that’s the start of the race, don’t wave it until they are crossing the starting line. Simple.

Why is it that Chase Elliott gets a penalty and Kyle Busch does not when he jumps the line on every restart??? - From Fred
Fred, there is a difference from the beginning of a race and a restart. Per NASCAR rule 10.5.5 Race Start/Restart/Green Flag Section C - At the initial start of the race, the number two starting position must not beat the number one starting position to the start/finish line. The starter of the race also controls the start with the green flag on initial starts. Elliott’s infraction came at the start of the race and that is why he was penalized. - Tim Southers

What surprises me most about this thread is the posters who saw a rule violation, a penalty to their driver for the obvious violation and who now want a rule change...…….YET when their same favorite driver restarted 3 wide at Daytona and was NOT PENALIZED they chose to remain silent.
You may want to cover up. Your FANBOI is showing!

And I don’t care about that, I still think that’s a smarter rule. When the green waves that’s the start of the race. Green means GO after all.

  25. Charlie Spencer

Charlie Spencer Short tracks and road courses rule.

Two different conversations going on here. One about whether Chase should have been penalized under the existing rule (easy: yes, he broke it), and one whether the rule should be changed (rules are always up for discussion although nothing is likely to happen).

  26. Blaze

    Blaze Midnight Rider

Since it’s a rule yeah, I agree he should have been.

But I don’t think it should be a rule at all. Change the way the race starts.

If they had done restarts 5 wide in Fontanna the race might have been more entertaining.
