Who will drive for Furniture Row next season?

Regardless of who they sign to the seat, nobody is gonna perform in that car like Kurt has.

Depends on who gets in it.

I was going to make a thread about why Kurt has been so fast in this machine whereas others have been terrible to mediocre in it.

A big part is Kurt himself but also, it has to do with the engine package. Have they become more closely affiliated with Hendrick or what? Its like the 78 is Hendrick's unnoficial 5th car.

They're really giving those guys good stuff to work with.

The 78 -uses RCR hardware not Hendricks.

There's also the argument that no matter how good the equipment, some drivers just aren't winners. Such is not the case with Kurt Busch.

Oh wow really? There goes my theory.

I always thought the 78 had Hendrick power under the hood. Must have been thinking of the 51.

As of today... my money is on Ryan Blaney.

You're not going to find another Kurt. The next best thing is to try and grow one.

You're right , of course . Ricky Stenhouse is starting to show some promise in his first year , so it can be done . My money is certainly on Berrier .It's going to be a project though. One step forward and two steps back ? Or is it the other way around?

yep.......that'd be tha 51.....who caused 2 cautions at chicago...................................................................

some will try to blame that on the engine.o_O Allgaier is probably still hiding in a hole somewhere.

Well you are wrong on the team affiliation, but your theory is not that far off. Kurt has said before that the 78 is an unofficial RCR car. They have access to every single RCR resource, sit in on all RCR meetings, and even can run RCR setups. Kurt himself can see what the 29 is running. Their crew chief is even a long-time RCR crew chief who has experience working with the other RCR crew chiefs. Any driver who gets a call from the 78 should not see it as a single car operation.

yep jeff......but that was 2 way street this yr...... note how strong harv's been ?............(chicken / egg ??)

AND...........prolly made big reason kurt's w/ shr in '14.

both harv-n-kurt got workin knowledge on every piece on car........may even help tony in '14.....if egos don't explode.

Simply put, FRR just needs someone that can drive. I wouldn't want to take retreads that have proven they can't get it done.

How many more races do you think that JPM will be in the car this season? Is he running until the end or being moved out early? I'm guessing it's an early exit. Out before Martinsville is my guess.

and RCR would like nothing better than to take a driver away from Brad. They hate him for pawning their drivers on restarts time and again.

Giving Larson his first starts during the chase would be a huge mistake. I think Chip will go all out to try and get Juan an oval win, even if they have to bend the rules a bit.

or.....chip may just give jpm junk cars they plan on gettin rid of in 2014 anyway....
.......an save all tha new stuff they're building fer larson next year . ?

My guess is before Kansas.

The sooner they can find a replacement and get him seat time in the car, the better for the team for next year. They should the have the replacement in the car before the end of the season if at all possible.

There's going to be an awful lot of pressure on this guy to preform next season. I think any seat time in Cup could benefit him tremendously. It's nothing new to throw fresh meat in during the Chase. I think it happens.

Guess I didn't finish my thought there. I meant to say that I think that it happens most all the time that rookies end up running some of the Chase races.

I think since he wasn't pulled out before, he won't be pulled out now. I love Larson but a bad few drives in the chase could bring unwanted pressure going into next season.

I like the idea of Blaney but damn that would be a quick rise. I'm not sure he's had enough seat time to be thrust into a full time Cup ride.

I'm really high on Blaney and Jeb Burton but I can't decide who's the better prospect.

If they put an untested rookie into the seat, not only could he hurt the team, but could cause havoc with the Chase. That would NOT endear him to
others and life could be miserable next year.

It's done pretty much every year. Last year Stenhouse ran three of the Chase races and Danica five. Nothing unusual.

I just had a crazy thought...what do people think about David Ragan?

He's young, got experience, multiple race winner, and I believe still may have some untapped potential as he was never able to flourish at RFR. Heck he won in a Front Row car this year and that's saying something!

Is he finished in quality rides and am I crazy? Or does anyone else think he could do alright in the 78?

I think he could do fine.. I think better then Jeff Burton at least. I'm down on Roush as a whole so I don't know if we've seen everything that Ragan can do. The team he's with now he's getting the most out of the car.

I think Ragan would do alright in the 78. He isn't Kurt but I think he would do ok. *nodding* Someone else mentioned Jeb Burton, he's really young but very talented. He might wreck a lot to begin with. That would worry me but he, as I said, is very talented.

David Ragan very well could have been in the 78 this season if Kurt's negotiation had broken down last year. He was either plan B or C, I forget. He hasn't been talked about once in these last few weeks, but honestly, things have changed fast enough that I wouldn't be surprised. I still think Blaney's the guy, with Josh Wise and Scott Speed explored as current Cup guys before Ragan.

Interesting thanks for the scoop, personally I'd take Ragan over Wise or Speed any day of the week. Ragan hasn't lit the world on fire but he is a proven winner in the Cup series.

Blaney wouldn't be a bad choice, he knows he has to make a name for himself if he is going to hang around, and he knows how to play the game and grew up in the sport.

I think there is more upside to Speed or Wise. I think they have a better chance of surprising the field once they get into good equipment.

I like David, but I think everyone already knows what kind of season he'd have in the #78. Would it really be any different than, at best, the #27 and, at worst, the #31? Good, but not great.

Maybe Blaney (in a couple seasons), or Wise and Speed, etc wouldn't do much better either - but I think there's a much better chance of catching lightning in a bottle than with Ragan.

What have Wise and Speed done that warrants an opportunity like that? I know they've been in crap rides but that doesn't mean they deserve a ride like the 78 which I feel is committed to doing well in the sport. You're taking a huge gamble if you go with Speed or Wise

David Ragan is one of the nice guys of the sport, might make a good media guy when he is thru racing. But..he has already had an opportunity to drive a top car with a big time sponsor, and he didn't cut it. So you get what you get with him. Scott Speed? 1 top five in 118 races, no top 5's in N'wide in 29 races. Josh wise is as bad. Ryan Blaney..there is no comparison, 2 wins, 8 top 5's, 15 top 10's in only 25 races in the trucks, 1 top five, 8 top tens in 14 races in N'wide, not to mention kicking butt in the K&N series. My only concern is that Blaney is already contracted with a good cup organization

I don't know what happened to Ragan after 2008 but I would like to see him in a decent ride again.

Anybody else think Allenbaba is just messing with us with Speed and Wise? They're like the worst two possible choices. Yeley would be better.

Kurt Busch's thoughts on the opening:

"I think the level of driver that they're looking for would be somebody with experience as well as somebody that has the potential to grow into whom would best fit that role," Busch said Monday. "But we're starting to run out of those experienced drivers, such as Juan Pablo Montoya ... and you're now looking at guys like a David Ragan as a veteran or a Scott Speed."

"One of the dark horses that nobody is really looking at that I think would be a good candidate is a Josh Wise. But the list can go on and on.

"You have (Dave) Blaney's son (Ryan), you have (Ryan) Truex, everybody that wants a Chase ride. This is a Chase car, I'm sure their phone is ringing off the hook, and I'm not mentioning the right names. But I see a young guy fitting in over there that can grow with the team just based off of what I've seen with their negotiations."

Busch said he had a casual, but telling, conversation with FRR owner Barney Visser just last week before the Chicago race. Visser asked Busch if he thought a rookie could finish in the top-five in the championship by his second year as Busch had done.

"He asked me, 'Do think that can be done with a rookie in this day and age?' And I told him the competition between sixth and 20th is so fierce, that I don't think it's the same as it was in the early 2000s," Busch recounted. "… there are so many guys, it's very difficult to crack through, especially with competitive cars. There's such a quantity of cars that can run well.

"So my answer to him was 'no,' but that tells you they're looking at a young guy."

He works with the organization, he knows more than anyone here does. And Kurt is mentioning the same names.
