WNBA

You hit it on the nose with Eric Wheeler. She is costing the Fever points with her play. This is still a young team though and hopefully things will sort out with who starts in the lineup. There is no reason that Caitlin shouldn't be both a great passer and a great scorer. There is no reason she has to be one or the other. Some of the players need to get better at providing some screens for her. I would love to see Mitchell drive to the basket and kick the ball back out to Clark.
The Wheeler stuff is baffling. She’s literally been the least efficient shooter of anyone who gets real minutes on the team. And she’s one of the highest-paid players in the league - living off of a reputation made several years ago, I suppose.

The Fever defense is, by far, the worst in the league as well. Hopefully a healthy Fagbenle helps rectify that. Lexie Hull getting more minutes would count a lot in that regard as well.

Clark needs to be taking 12-14 shots a game.

Man, the Sun had two good games in a row. Sun/Dream was really close throughout. The Dream went on a little run at the end, and it was a wrap after some free throws.

Not sure why Coach White took Dijonai out of the game in crunch time at the very end. They needed a 3, and she had been playing well and was 3 for 6 on threes in that game. She had just hit a bunch of big shots to give them the game against the Mystics the day before. I'm obviously no coach, but that decision was a real head-scratcher. Even one of the commentators said she would have kept Dijonai in. It didn't make any sense. Good game though, with good defense by both teams.

I might have to start following the Sun in addition to the Sky now that I'm getting more familiar with their roster and Dijonai has become one of my favorites. I like DeWanna Bonner, too. She reminds me of Latrell Sprewell with her slashing/streaky shooting style, and she's a great defender. She's fun to watch when she gets going. I like watching Alyssa Thomas's playmaking and quietly filling up the points, rebounds, and assists columns on the stat sheet, too.

Got a couple of games with our super rookies this afternoon that I'll have to check out later, Sky/Lynx and Mercury/Fever. At this point, the Lynx and Mercury are two of the few teams I haven't seen yet, and I'm looking forward to it. I like Napheesa Collier in 2K, and I can't wait to see ol' Diana Taurasi for the first time since probably the mid-2000s. I can't believe she's still even playing, let alone at such a high level.

Idk how you’re supposed to account for a healthy Brittney Griner. The Fever certainly haven’t managed to slow her down at all today.

This is drama.

Too bad CC couldn’t get that triple double. Angel Reese still leading ROTY race.
The triple-double definitely would’ve been nice. She showed once again that even with an off shooting night she can help lead the team to victory though. Her grabbing rebounds and being able to throw a dart in transition led to a lot of easy points.

Big road win after being down 15? at some point in the second half.

Her passing is totally amazing. I can hardly believe some of her passes. Unbelievable. She does needs to get her shooting back on track. Good game to watch.

And the Fever beat a 500 team.

She was actually pretty graceful post-game. She was also chatting it up with CC during the extended review for the techs after the first half scuffle. And when they met at halfcourt for tip off you could tell CC was pretty starstruck.

I am glad that Taurasi said some nice words about Caitlin. She goes up in my respect for her.

I watched the Sky/Lynx and Mercury/Fever games. Sky/Lynx was my kind of game. Good defense by both teams and some physicality, gritty but clean, and close throughout. The Lynx found another gear defensively in the last few minutes and got it done. I'm so happy for Angel Reese setting that single season double-double record, just barely, off that last free throw.

Shout-out to the Sky's Lindsay Allen, who played a very good game, scoring what I think was a career high 13 points (she's an unselfish, true point guard), and showed good leadership on the floor. Poor Diamond DeShields was having a rough game. She was hustling as usual but picked up a bunch of quick fouls and missed a layup in transition. You could see the lack of confidence written all over her face. They got another steal and went off in transition again, and Lindsay passed it right back to Diamond, who made the layup that time. 😊 👍

Honorable mention, Minnesota's Courtney Williams, who had a sweet little friendly moment with her former teammate Marina during the pre-game (Marina was mic'd up). Courtney's my kind of point guard - true - and made some nice passes. She was fun to watch.

As for the Mercury/Fever game, it was a great game with plenty of drama. It was awesome to see Diana Taurasi still tearing it up, which made me feel like I was back in college watching her like I used to, and I was impressed with Brittany Griner's skills. She's not just big, she can shoot really well from in close. Seeing her teammates hide behind her screens and shoot like the AI does in the 2K games cracked me up. :lol2:

Yeah, that's about where my praise of Phoenix ends. Oh, there was drama - and unnecessary drama, mostly on their part. One of the commentators said that Phoenix leads the league in technical fouls, and I was just like "yep, I can see why." I get that it's a competiton and the game had playoff vibes, but some of the stuff that went on was just ridiculous.

They got really lazy on D at one point, too. I can't stand it when teams, especially good teams, start coasting on the defensive end. I started out liking them, but by the time Katie Lou Samuelson picked up that flagrant foul from Natasha Cloud, I was over them and wanted Indiana to win. Glad they pulled it off.

Oh yeah, true point guard mode was engaged. You guys understand why I get hyped seeing that? Yes, of course she can and should shoot, but that girl's passing is a thing of beauty. I dig it. I haven't seen her get visibly rattled yet, either, no matter what's happening on the court. I like that, too.

Courtney Williams was at USF the same time I was and took the program to its peak. I like watching her hoop again.

I agree completely. I think earlier I was trying to say the offense simply needs to run through her - when they use others to initiate the offense the offense stagnates. She’s shown now she can comfortably get 14 shots off and still have double-digit assists. The PnR game with Boston is getting better all the time.

Some damn good games on tap tonight.

7:00pm
Minnesota @ New York - WNBA League Pass
Chicago @ Atlanta - CBS Sports Network, whatever the **** that is.

9:30pm
Indiana @ Las Vegas - ESPN

10:00pm
Washington @ Los Angeles - WNBA League Pass

All-Star roster also revealed during the pre-game show at 9. Will be interesting to see how the player and media votes tracked against the fan vote.

Wow, that's awesome, man! ^_^

Okay, yeah, we're on the same wavelength.

That said, I feel compelled to stick up for Erica Wheeler. She's a baller, a steady veteran point guard with good handles. She likes to work in iso and cross people up. Here's some highlights of her from last year.

I think the problem is that Erica and Caitlin play the same exact position - she took Erica's job as the starting point guard. Looking at Erica's stats from last year, she averaged in the single digits in points (with plenty of 10-20 point games that year) but also averaged 9.9 assists, so she was clearly moving the ball. She also got a lot of minutes.

I feel like she's probably one of those ball-dominant players who needs to have the ball in her hands for a good amount of time to be effective. Now that Caitlin is there, Erica's coming off the bench and getting less minutes, and her total production has decreased accordingly.

To Erica's credit, she has willingly embraced her new bench/mentor role with Caitlin, and her teammates seem to love her. I've also seen several instances of good sportsmanship and/or affection from her towards opposing players, and vice versa, in just the few games I've watched. That tells me that she's probably pretty popular around the league. I'm not sure that she really fits on the Fever anymore on the court, but whether that's true or not, it's definitely good for morale to have a classy veteran like Erica on the roster.

I think there are definitely ways for them to be on the floor together, just not the way the offense is constructed now. Getting the ball to Clark off of screens is an obvious one, since she’s shooting something insane around 50% on catch-and-shoot 3s right now. But whether it’s the chemistry or the coaching, they just haven’t run those sets often so far. But if you’re going to have two ball handlers on the floor it only makes sense to foster those types of plays and that seems lost upon Sides so far.

At this point, it’s a guarantee. Another double double for Angel Reese.

While I still think Caitlin Clark is better and will be long term, Angel Reese will win ROTY and it won’t be close.

Horrendous 4th quarter from Indiana. Gotta be their worst shooting performance all year, no one can hit from anywhere.

A’ja Wilson 🐐 carried hard in the first half and Kelsey Plum delivered the kill shot for Vegas.

Wilson and Plum are a deadly combination. I can see why Wilson was MVP last year.

I don't know what the trouble is with the Fever, sometimes they play great and other times they look terrible.

It's easy: A pro WNBA team hired a head coach with ZERO experience as a head coach.

Rising tides lift all boats.

Last leg of a five-game road trip. Tough stretch. Just couldn’t finish easy baskets, dead legs or whatever it may have been. Poor finishing around the rim. CC legit could’ve had close to 20 assists last night.

Just watched the replays of Dream/Sky and Aces/Fever. I enjoyed both games, although at this point, I'm such a homer for this league that I'd have enjoyed both games if they were 40 point blowouts.

Dream/Sky was close until crunch time in the fourth quarter, when the Sky closed it out. Chennedy Carter, who was of course drafted by Atlanta and spent her first couple of years there, went off for 26 points on 11/16 shooting. Angel Reese had another double-double with 19 boards.

Unfortunately for the Fever, they had to play a fully healthy Las Vegas Olympic Team. Good luck with that. The Fever gave it the ol' college try and hung around for a while, but it was just never gonna be enough through 4 quarters. Kelsey Plum just lit the Fever up, and A'ja Wilson, who seemingly always goes off, did the same.

Chennedy and A'ja have become two of my favorite players to watch. Like I alluded to before about Diana Taurasi, they make me feel like I'm back in college again, like I'm watching Allen Iverson and Tim Duncan, respectively. I love them.

There was some really good sportsmanship in both games, especially in that Dream/Sky game. Shout-out to Jordin Canada, who accidentally fouled Chennedy Carter hard on a jumper and had the presence of mind to catch her and break what would otherwise have been a hard fall, and then helped her up afterwards. Honorable mention to the great Tina Charles, who shared a laugh and some advice with Kamilla Cardoso after stuffing her layup attempt not even 10 seconds into the game. Sports rivalries can be fun to watch, but I've always been a sucker for good sportsmanship.

Good analysis, and I agree. I think Coach Sides wants to run the offense through Clark, with her as the point guard and primary ball handler/offensive facilitator. Not a bad strategy, obviously, but yeah, it kinda renders Wheeler redundant when they're both on the court at the same time.

The ROTY/MVP talk, like sports itself, is always totally subjective. As Lexie said in the clip, it just depends on what you're looking for. I think at this point in the season, you could make a case for either Clark or Reese. I think it will end up being Caitlin, but no matter who ultimately wins it, someone's inevitably gonna pitch a fit, which is typically how it goes.

Angel Reese has hit the first two 3s of her career tonight. If she can become a bit of a consistent stretch 4 threat… Jesus Christ. Another great performance tonight.
