Texas Test

they haven't been all mid sized SEDANS. Two door HARDTOPS and sedans until the Ford in 98 with the Taurus which was a more door SEDAN changed into a two door for Nascar. :idunno:

Point taken but you know what I mean. I would have have rather seen a new SS model built on the Camaro chassis, or perhaps a Chevy version of the Cadillac CTS, but the truth is sales for cars like that are in the toilet, and GM has decided the Camaro fit their marketing goals better.

they are taking a two door hardtop and making a 2 door sedan out of it. At least it is a two door sporty car instead of an economy family car four door sedan. Camaro's have a long line of performance behind the name..The SS was a joke that used to have a performance name back in the day. Reminds me of when the gov't got all of the motors smogged down and the Camaro in the mid 80's had around 220 HP on their best day.

Lol what?

The SS isn't some boring economy car, and certainly isn't a joke. It's a rear wheel drive, 420 horsepower V8, stick shift, mag ride control, complete beast of a performance sedan.

I couldn't disagree more. The SS street car was a damn fine looking car, and considering the limitations put on the bodywork by NASCAR, I think the race car was also very nice looking, easily my favorite GM race car since the G body cars of 1981-88. I'm OK with the new Camaro, but I don't think it looks that much better, and I'm still having a hard time getting used to pony cars in Cup racing, even if it makes sense. For the entire fifty years of my life, Cup cars have been mid-sized SEDANS. The case for the pony cars isn't helped by the fact that the Xfinity Camaros and Mustangs are HORRIBLE looking.
HAHA, I was not, am not saying it was bad looking, I was simply saying the Camaro in Cup form looks better than the SS in Cup form , but that does not imply that I am saying the SS is bad looking car;)
I will agree with you about pony cars in the Cup Series.

If you could find a stick, most of the production run was auto and finding one with a stick was like finding a needle in hay stack, but yeah, its not a boring sedan , it has more HP than the Impala SS( stock SS) of the 90's.

Yeah, GM never really TRIED to sell it. My guess is by the time they brought the cars up from Australia, they were probably a break-even deal at best, and they were probably wary of it stealing sales from their other car models. I'm not sure the production chain could have even handled the car being more successful. Selling too many more cars probably would have meant having to set up a production line here in the states. It really WAS a great car though. I read numerous car revues from places that are normally less than kind to GM vehicles and EVERYBODY liked it. They kept saying it was the best car nobody knew existed. My guess is if you stopped 100 people on the street, less than five would know this car existed. I even ran into some NASCAR "fans" that didn't really understand it was a real car that you could go to a dealership and buy. They thought it was just an Impala with some NASCAR mandated body mods. As much as ANY NASCAR legal car produced since the 1988 Monte Carlo SS, this car embodied the spirit of what a Cup car was supposed to be, a high performance rear drive V8 mid sized car.

Personal opinion of course, I disagree, if we are comparing that year Charger to the same year Camaro, hands down Charger, but I am not a person that likes Camaro's or Mustangs.

Now, lets use the current year Charger to compare with the current year Camaro, only fair right?

Ive always liked the style of the Chargers. Just wish they were a more quality product in comparison.

Here is great angle that shows the changes made to the side for the Camaro , from JTG Racing's Twitter,

Not saying it looks bad, because GM did the best they had to work with - but that SS greenhouse with “Camaro” everything else makes it Frankenstein’s Monster ugly IMO.

4,055 out of 12,953 total production, it was not a very popular car.
Damn thing was way too expensive and dealers in the US rarely had one on the lot. If you wanted one you had to wait 6-8 weeks for a factory order, which just adds more cost to the consumer.

Okay, nothing to do about the actual subject here but you mentioned the factory order thing.....

Waited for 8 weeks when I ordered my Jeep Wrangler. Eight of the toughest weeks of my life. There's an option on the Mopar website that allows you to track your build. It's kind of amazing. Most of the wait is just that..... waiting. The actual build from start/finish took less than 8 hours.

Not many people are looking to wait 2 extra months to get their car, especially in todays fast paced internet environment. They will call every dealer in the country to have one delivered rather than ordered.

I tried going that route but what I wanted wasn't anywhere to be found. I should say..... what my wife wanted. ;)

My wife and I drove 8 hours one way to New Port Richey to buy our Ram. There were only two like we wanted and the other one was in Nevada. I drove the new truck back and she followed me in the Rental car. We used the rental car to save money on gas and not put more mileage on ours.

It really WASN'T that expensive for what you were getting. Compare it to other cars that have the same level of room, features and performance. A V8 Camaro will cost every bit as much, and you only get 2 doors. I wouldn't think twice about waiting eight weeks for a car like that. MANY people order their Corvettes, and the wait is every bit as long.

They have lost close to half their value in two, three years. Might be a good car to buy used if you like the styling.

As many cars do. If I had a need for such a vehicle, I would be all over it. These cars will be a footnote in the history of Chevrolet some day, and I'd love to own a piece of that history.

What the hell are you talking about? Wrong again. Their resale value is ridiculously high. Good luck finding one under $30k unless it's an older one with over 50k miles.
Yep. Just did a KBB on one with 35k miles and its sitting at private sale of $34k.

I considered buying one back in the summer until I realized they were still wayyy out of my price range.

I just looked on autotrader and searched all 2015-17 pre-owned SS sedans across the country. There are currently 142 for sale at an average price of $39,903. If you only search 2015 models, there are 46 at an average price of $35,059. So much for losing "half their value"

did ya really look that hard.? BTW this is retail. If you can't talk some of these slow movers down to 25 grand I don't know what to tell ya.

It's a gamble, you can get a good one cheap and it might hold value, the depreciation sure has been knocked off of them. They don't have the curb appeal of the Prowler though, they look like every other 4 door sedan.

2Sweet’s statement still stands. He said 2015 models & theres still not a single 2015 on that list under $30k. Much less a 2015 with rational miles for the money anywhere near $30k.

Their current average value at around ~$35k is fact.

As for getting the SS at $25k and expecting the transmission to not be shot or the carfax being clean is a pipe dream.

sure..you believe what you want, I have confidence I can walk in with five grand down and get a good one for half of what the cost new. Probably get some "special" financing. You go ahead and pay retail to prove your point.

Whatever you think you could pay for something has no effect on the actual value. I guess when you can't argue against facts, you gotta keep backing yourself into a corner with more BS :idunno:

No dealer with a lick of sense is gonna take a multi $k loss on a car like that. They will do a dealer trade long before selling it to someone with your negotiating standards.

It’s kinda like the Plymouth Prowler. Hardly made but holds it value well

I don't know about that. The people I work for used to be part owners of a Chrysler dealership, and when the the Prowler was new they were first out they ordered one for themselves and stored it away. This year, the finally decided to part with this "brand new" car with less than 75 miles on it and couldn't get 25,000 for it. They didn't get hurt too bad, because they paid price plus incentives, but if they had paid full retail for that car, they would have lost their ass. From what I've seen, there is VERY LITTLE interest in the Prowler, probably because it's completely impractical and it's nothing but a poser. At least the SS is the real deal.

sure bud You have no clue of my knowledge or experience in buying used cars. This below isn't close to the price one can get at an auction with either credentials to get in or a friend that has them. Go ahead and pick it apart I know what I could get one for and it would be real close to NADA loan value which is lower than these prices.

If you say so Bud. go pay retail.

Nobody pays retail, and all cars depreciate. Still not sure what your point is.

First, you called the SS an "economy family car" and a "joke" while comparing it to a smog era crapbox with half the horsepower. Laughable. Then you said nobody bought it (wrong again). Then you say they "lose almost half their value in 2-3 years". Proven wrong (by those pesky facts) once again, you talk about your negotiating skills while posting figures for cars sold at auction or whatever (that are four years old BTW).

Clearly you know nothing about the car, which is fine. But if you're going to just pull stuff out of thin air and spout it as fact, don't be surprised that you're getting called out on it.

Try that with a 2015-2017 year model as 2Sweet actually mentioned prior.
