Kevin Harvick calls for eliminating Clash, combining with All-Star Race

If they dont do anything else, they need to move it back to a Saturday night race.

I don't have a problem with that. I'll go him one further and suggest dropping the All-Star too.

I'm with you. I tend lean more traditionalists but the Winston/AKA All star race has outlived its purpose. Likewise the pro bowl in football and the all star game in basketball.

I almost thin think the All-Star race takes away from the 600 at this point. The track should but put all their eggs in one basket with the 600 race weekend.

I call for teams to stop using expendable races as testing sessions and actually go balls to the wall for the prize. That being said, the purses for these races need to be taken up a few notches. The entire idea of non-points paying races is to see drivers take more risks because there are no negative consequences. It’s an exciting event that should draw crowds that may not be able to make it for a full race. Now it’s just a hyped happy hour.

I've always had a problem with the so-called All-Star race. What's 'All-Star' about it? It's the same drivers who face each other every week, in a format we'd scream about if the race counted. Taking the points away doesn't make it any more palatable, only more pointless (literally).

Winston and Bud are gone. Bury these legacies. Does any other major series run exhibition races?

But the guys on Fox are always talking about how there's not one driver that's going to settle for anything but winning these events, because they want that top money and that they're "going to let it all hang out with some wild and crazy racing." They always show us the 1987, 1989 and 1992 All-Star races as examples of what we can expect.

I think you're correct and that neither preliminary exhibition event (All-Star Race and Clash) builds anticipation for the main event anymore.

Unless a title sponsor were found to put up an absurd winning purse like $5 million, you're not going to recreate the financial incentive that had drivers taking crazy chances and everyone feeling the heat as when they were racing for $200,000 in the late '80s and early '90s.

I don't pay much attention to the two exhibition events anymore, and they are my two least favorite races on the schedule. I'd rather see them replaced by almost anything else conceivable at other venues, or if they are going to chop dates off the season, start right there.

Good points, there is plenty of wiggle room for changes in those areas, I think they can come up with better substitutes when it comes to different planning.

Start 20 cars for a pre-season exhibition race at New Smyrna...there's already cameras and a NAASCAR officiating trailer/personnel there for the K&N race. Use the Daytona garage for car setup. Impound the cars and take them via trailer to New Smyrna. These haulers can haul 3 cars already...only need 7 trailers. Each team can bring a "war wagon" of basic tools you'd need for a pit stop and body damage repair. One thirty minute practice at 4pm, autograph session/pit party on the front stretch for the fans 5pm-6:30pm, "drivers start your engines" at 7pm. 60 lap race, green flag laps only, one new tire allowed and it's optional to put it on or not.

If you are doing away with one, I vote to get rid of the All Star race,
I have always enjoyed the Bud shootout as it is the start of the season and cuts one week off the off season...I think the All Star race has been a snoozer for far too long. If they must continue with it move it over to the dirt track and sell out.

I would rather see the teams have a week off to enjoy some R&R. If that wouldn’t work have a points paying race or do something fun like have a big demo derby

I'm glad people could decipher what I typed. I should not post from my phone....lol.

I'd be content with an additional week off. Bottom line, the 600's past, present and future must be preserved. The All-Star race's value now and moving forward does not. I remember 1992 and the "One Hot Night" theme. I remember some cool paint schemes back in the day. Otherwise, it never truly ended up being what NASCAR and Winston envisioned it to be in the late 80's, early 90's. Its quality/importance started to fizzle out long before the NASCAR boom did.

There used to be real buzz around the ASR and you are right about some of the cool paint schemes. For me it was must see TV along with my buddies and we watched a lot of them together. You knew that if a driver had a car that could win or even one that was good they would be going for it.

Part of the problem is the venues. A small field for a restrictor plate race is almost guaranteed boredom, if they want to keep it, move it to a more competitive track. Same thing with the All Star race. Move it to Bristol or something. Regardless, if these events stay on the schedule, they don't warrant their own week on the schedule. Move the All Star Race back to the day before the 600. Run the Shootout after the qualifying races.

Kevin Harvick needs to shut his mouth, if he doesn’t want to race he doesn’t have to.

The All-Star race has to be the dumbest all-star event in sports, even worse than the Pro Bowl. It’s called the “All-Star Race”, but actually has fewer stars participating in it than a regular race.

It's a race, it's at Charlotte, I watch it. If the package spices up the 1.5's like they hope it will, it could be good. They are going to have it this year. Who knows what the future will bring, but changes are a coming. I feel pretty good about the future with the management they have in place now.

will someone please tell me how the 6 car was in the race.
wasn't hard to find, here ya go
Drivers who competed full-time in the Cup Series in 2018 are eligible for the 2019 Clash if they won a pole for a points-paying race last season, have a Daytona 500 pole to their credit, were among the 16 playoff drivers in 2018, or are previous winners of the Daytona 500 or the Clash.
Young Ryan BTW won the 500 back in 08, 11 years ago, when men were men, the cars were fabulous, and everything was wonderful.

I my opinion, it has TOO MANY stars in it. The race started out as a race for winners from the last calendar year., and that's what it should return to. If that means only tens cars, so be it. if you want to throw in ONE wildcard, I could probably go for that, but no fan vote, no former champions, no former All Star races winners etc, etc. etc.

Either get rid of both races OR use both races solely as a testing session for potential future rules packages. The 2018 All-Star race was a prime example of testing the waters, and I would be in favor of seeing something similar (in terms of experimentation) for it and the Clash in the future.

If both races must stay and my previous points will not occur, then my hope is NASCAR will harken back to their roots and make both races feel special. No more of this "everyone can participate" crap. Make it small fields solely designated for drivers who earned their spot in the respective race. For All-Star, only race winners within past 365 days of current All-Star race, most recent All-Star winner, most recent Cup champion, and winner of The Open should participate. For The Clash, only pole winners of previous season. KEEP. IT. SIMPLE.

The Clash and All-Star Races are uneccessary features in a long season where NASCAR is focused on controlling (reducing) costs.

Pole Winners are more like Time Trial winners — not the basis for their own race, since they already raced based on getting the pole for their respective races. I guess it helped fill an event schedule, especially when demand for NASCAR was higher. Give them a special color jersey to wear at the banquet...

And the All-Star Race is also meaningless as the “Stars” race each other every week.

Time to move on. Events should have true meaning, not just be a track parade.

I wouldn’t be opposed to both the Clash and All Star Race going away, many other traditions of the sport have been squandered away, why not these two races. I would think if you’re looking to cut races, we can start there and move forward. Opens up two additional weeks of the rest for the teams/crew members and drivers have a longer off season by a few days.

I'm sure Nascar, Daytona Speedway and Advance Auto Parts will jump right on that.

And we come to the root of why these events will continue: lining the pockets of SMI and ISC, and a sanctioning body more concerned with the profitability of that duopoly than the welfare of the sport or the teams.

Then run the clash right after qualifying with different cars. Might be interesting if Nascar would allow any cheating to be acceptable for this race. I would love to see what the CC's can come up with.

Racing is a dangerous sport.

So, if we are going to dump the Clash and the All Star Race, why aren't we talking about the Duels? Locked in on a plate track does not produce good racing IMO--whatever that is. Frankly, I do think you need to have something leading up to the sport's greatest race. We love the feeling of one minute winter, and the next minute the biggest race of the season. The target demographic--which I'm not sure NASCAR cares about anymore--needs some lead up IMO.

They can get rid of them too as far as I’m concerned. They used to provide some drama as a full-time team could potentially miss the field for the 500 if they did poorly in the Duels/125’s, but they’re not really necessary anymore with the charter system in place and with fewer entries than in the past.

. Looking at it without the duels, they just out of clean air start their most popular race and have the Daytona 500 without anything leading up to it? Eh they have to have something before it I would think.

I completely agree....not suggesting getting rid of anything, but if the All Star and The Clash are considered to be on the block, you have to look at The Duels as the purpose for those races has changed or no longer exists. Either go with single car qualifying, or set the entire field with The Duels IMO.

Like with Indy 500 qualifying, to understand why things are the way they are now, we need to compare to how things used to be:

-50 to 60 cars filed entries for the Daytona 500, no one was guaranteed to make the show outside of those that could count on a provisional
-First round qualifying was Saturday, 8 days before the race, set the front row, qualifying speed is important incase something bad befalls you in the Twin 125's
-Busch Clash was held for the previous year's pole winners on Sunday
-Monday was 2nd round qualifying, if you couldn't make the top 15 in the Twin 125's, the next way to make the field was speed so cars focused on this
-Tuesday was 3rd round qualifying
-Thursday was the Twin 125's, these races acted as dress rehearsals for the Daytona 500 combined with the more desperate trying to race their way in to the show
-Top 14 minus the polesitter in each race qualified for the Daytona 500, the next 6 to 8 to 10 cars qualified on speed, and the final spots were provisionals based on the previous year's points
-Saturday was the Busch race, Sunday was the Daytona 500
-Lots of practice sessions in the middle.

Compare to now:

-42 cars filed entries for the Daytona 500, 36 of these are guaranteed to make the show
-Qualifying is Sunday, 7 days before the race, set the front row, and the 2 fastest non-charter cars are guaranteed to make the field; otherwise qualifying speed is irrelevant
-Busch Clash is held for the guys that made last year's playoffs, plus McMurray, Suarez, Menard, and Newman, with how the races at Daytona have evolved, this is a seriously good chance to wreck a car
-there are no qualifying sessions Monday or Tuesday
-Thursday are the Duel 150's, these have devolved into being little more than dress rehearsals combined with how the races at Daytona have evolved, a seriously good chance to wreck a car; there are 4 cars going for 2 spots, the fans largely don't care about these 4 cars
-Friday is the Truck race, Saturday is the Xfinity race, Sunday is the Daytona 500 which is a seriously good chance to wreck a car
-Lots of practice sessions in the middle.

Kevin Harvick needs to shut his mouth, if he doesn’t want to race he doesn’t have to.

I agree. He just wants to extend his vacay another 3 or 4 days prob.

Don’t know why any race fans want to get rid of races? Cars on the track, I’m watching...and the Whol Speedweek thing is a nice way to open the season.....for those who want to see nascar racing.

I am curious, why do the teams need additional time for rest? You are not the only person that mentioned this. Many people I know are lucky to get a two week paid vacation. My neighbor has worked six days a week for the past three years. Just trying to understand this.
