NASCAR - Television Ratings Thread

I’ve always contended that ratings decline is predominantly due to multiple factors: the fading of car culture, the far larger number of choices people have for viewing/playing, the placement of too many broadcasts on cable channels versus networks, and the many changes in NASCAR relative to rules and driver retirements.

Viewership stabilization is a good sign, if it holds. Networks love sports but won’t overpay for the next contract. I do believe more variety of tracks can help stir greater interest. Attendance at tracks for new c events should be strong. I’d love to see racing return to Rockingham, and get sanctioned at Gateway (St. Louis market) and Nashville, plus other short tracks. I like road courses but not sure that moves the needle like Roval adaptations might.

I agree and different Nascar blunders have taken out different groups at different times. Some left when the chase started and others bailed when the CoT arrived and as the chase changed and morphed into a lottery more left. Obviously there are a lot more reasons but those are the biggies IMO

I think the Roval they have at Charlotte needs a genuine bus stop. I think they need to put their toe in the water slowly by adding a short track, and a road course and see how it goes. Nascar hasn't been falling all over themselves catering to every fans whim, but continue to show decent profits in spite of leaner times. Under new management, Nascar continues to get leaner while expanding into the lower series and widening their influence and fan base world wide. The shake up in the schedule is the first example of their work and I think they did a brilliant job with what they had to work with. They are on schedule 2021 with the new car and it is going to be a cost cutter with many standardized parts, engines to follow. Now I am pretty sure a deathbedder will be here soon to tell me Nascar is dying whatever that means but I am and will always be on the other end of that stinky mess of lies and half truths. Other X fans can casually drop away or age out, some loose their enthusiasm for the sport, some can cry or bleed all over the pages every day. Good riddance, enjoy your other pursuits. Come back if you get bored.

Somebody said it was due to global warming. Then I read it was the fans fault for not enjoying the product NASCAR had been serving up. Yep, lets gaslight the fans. Yeah, that's the ticket.

you sound confused, that's a good sign BTW. Electric is next, Thomas Edison said that.

Shocking I tell ya. I missed where you were going to start posting about stick and ball...wait, somebody wrote that was an epic fail...:)

Oh, and still working :)

I forgot to add...Psst, I used the word.term correctly. Might wanna check out gaslight and how it is used to describe what the abusive partner in a relationship does to the abused.

No, you didn't. You stated that you read someone blaming fans for not enjoying the NASCAR product. A third party blaming a group of people defined by their association with another party, correctly or incorrectly, does not constitute gaslighting. Nor does it form an abusive relationship.

What is shocking is the volume of viewers that have turned off the television and left en masse year after year. How do you have 7.5 million fans watch something in 2014 and less than 3 million 5 years later? How is it even possible?

About 5 million more people watched Bristol from home in 2014 and about 100k more saw the spring race live......and that was in the middle of March!!!!!!!!!!!

And the band played on.

Forget NASCAR, I'm surprised as many people watch golf as they do!

My age group kicked butt in the demographic ratings for Bristol as us over 50 guys and gals accounted for almost 70% of the audience.

I tried to check the percentage of viewers between 18-34 but unfortunately the calculator I was using only reads in whole numbers.

just make something up. :idunno:

What is made up?

Almost 70% of the viewers were over 50?

I am actually not over 50 (I wish)

My calculator actually does read all numbers and the 18-34 demo was less than 1%

If I have posted erroneous information let me know so I can get it corrected.

more made up, it's all good in fantasy land. I don't know why anybody would be upset

You said I made stuff up but don’t know what it is I allegedly made up. How can you say I made stuff up if you don’t know what it is? If you point out my errors I will own them.

Before I make an official post would I be correct in saying something like 27,000 males between 12-34 watched the Bristol race?

sorry man that one cracked me up. Official post? Like is there a notary in da house.

No problem as I will wait for someone to correct me concerning almost 70% of the audience being over 50 and and a number so small you need a telescope to see it for the 18-34 demo.

One thing to keep in mind is that everyone in and around Nascar is making so much money that it isn’t essential that people actually follow it. Heck, you might have even told me that!

yeah they showed a good profit last quarter..that be the important part..I didn't make an official thread about it, it's public knowledge. Maybe you can get your why's?, shocks, and what happened? answered by e mailing the TV people. New content is always welcomed here. Ratings are trending up this year.

The Titanic would be trending up compared to the ratings last year. Can you believe that only 27,000 guys between 18-34 watched Sunday’s race. Doesn’t that amount seem awfully small to you?

No, because it's not true.

from a marketing standpoint as an answer to what ever fantasy figure real or imagined you can come up with. It would be pretty stupid to spend a large portion of a marketing budget to a small portion of the demographic. That isn't how a business works. So one questions the motives of someone who after being told that numerous times continues to say the same thing over and over. Comparing that stat to one of the worst civilian maritime disasters in history? like i said, I really don't know why some people get so upset.

What is more shocking the unsinkable sinking or NASCAR’s 34 and under demo? If anyone would give me the correct numbers I sure would appreciate it as it is important.

you think it is, rank it right up there with the Titanic? I would try to chill out a bit..it's a long season . I would take your own advice and not understand why anybody would get upset about it.

I agree as they are just numbers that provide a snapshot of one race. Just like 5 years ago the 7.5 million people that watched the Bristol spring race provided a snapshot of that day. If I was FOX I would not be happy but that is a different story.

They don't use those numbers, but like the Titanic they are dramatic..I guess. outdated and useless from a business standpoint.

As far as I know the Networks use the number of people that watch a race as well as demographic information as a means to determine ad rates. That method could have changed but either way you slice it dropping millions of viewers in a few short years can’t be seen as something you work toward attaining.

yep they sure do, but again business doesn't live in the past but in the now. And they target the particular demographic they have now. You continue to point out that large demographic like it is something bad..haha Talk about missing the boat..did ya get the pun there:D. I wonder how pointing out an even older demographic in the Golf series. I wonder if the save the children campaign would work as badly as it does here? Nascar is not suffering from any lack of commercials, that has been holding steady. The attendance has hurt a bit, but the quarterlies are showing a good profit. It is nothing anyone should be upset about, especially when one doesn't have a dog in the hunt. The viewing numbers are up this year.

Don’t compare Golf’s demo to Nascar as it is not flattering to say the least.

I will take your word for commercials as I have neither the stomach or time to sit through them for Nascar or anything else.

When you say that advertisers cater to the older demographic of Nascar what do you mean? Do they run more ads for things like pain medication, Viagra, insurance for final expenses and retirement communities?

I also agree that attendance has been hurt and is trending downward. I think it needs to hold steady where it is as having crowds that drop below 30k and into the teens would be bad.
