'21 Generation 7 Car news

Listening to DBC, and they were (shocking, I know) kind of down on the test. Or giving the negative side that the NASCAR PR machine won't let out. The cars were generating way, way too much heat. Freddie said that he was "hearing" of teams drilling holes in the windshield to vent the heat buildup. They also said that it was next to impossible to build a run, and that cars were losing the draft while staying in line. Sigh.... Enjoy being called back to the NASCAR hauler, guys.
No windshields were harmed during the filming of this test.

“Freddie” is an idiot.

See post 3030 2nd to the last paragraph.
It's just a tad late in the game to be working on such basic things as overheating ****pits and inability to draft on a car that the rules package is designed for pack drafting at 3/4 of the tracks. There's tons to like about the next gen car (flat underpan, diffuser to help aero, symmetric bodies, composite bodies, IRS, sequential gearbox), but my expectations are extraordinarily low as I truly think it's going to be a ****show.

Why is he an idiot?

He talked about the bugs in the car currently and what came out of the test. Everyone knows that the car was not perfect out of the box and testing was going to show real world issues that would need worked out. He gave information, he didn’t say anything that was wrong.

You haven't a clue. They are still working on the gen 6, it never stops..changes won't stop on the next gen.

I can't get over how bad ass these cars look

On this, we agree. They LOOK amazing. My only complaint with the look is the C pillar area of the greenhouse is odd, looking nothing like real car when the rest does to a great extent.

edit: The Mustang is BY FAR the best and most badass looking of the 3 imho

Buescher had a side duct. Pretty cool seeing a rear view mirror where it normally is

The Mustang looks to be the only one to go with a different model (GT500 from GT). The Camaro and Camry look to be the same model from 2021.

He said he’d “heard” teams were drilling holes in windshields to vent heat buildup.

Complete nonsense.

They’re just getting started. They have 5 months to develop cooling, aero and other things that inevitably pop up.

Were you around when the spec Indy Car began testing? My goodness ... IndyCar was dead. Dead, I say!

Cooling has always been a problem. Teams don't want to sacrifice the speed lost by letting air inside the car. I hope they find something that works and is easy to check. The gerbils will be able to check the wind speed along with heart beats.

Bring back the thermometer on the headrest for in car cameras!!!!! /s

Ok? Based on the cooling problems they are having and the shots of the varrying ducts being used in testing it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they were in fact drilling holes for new heat escape mechanisms.

The guy is actually involved in the sport, which none of us are, and he’s reporting what he’s hearing and seeing. Not sure how that is idiotic.

Were you there or do you have direct contact with the people that he does?

I didn't have to be there. Why ask a smug question you already know the answer to??

The heated air inside the car isn't going to "vent" through holes drilled in the forward facing windshield. At 200 per. That's a fact.

Now that we've settled that we can wait impatiently for the next series of random social media "mentions" about the safety of the new cars.

Tinfoil is on special at Costco this weekend.

I'm curious as to what capacity his involvement is....
Not being a smart ass, just didn't know he was part of the Industry.

No ****.

They aren’t venting air out, they are forcing cooler air in.

Some more notable tidbits from drivers.

Buescher said the rear view camera took some getting used to regarding finding the dimensions of the car. It’s also uncomfortably hot in the ****pit. The steering is quick so they are working to slow it down.

Chastain said that there were only 8 cars so it was very hard to make any runs and there was always a gap between cars, but with a full field the runs should come.

Stenhouse said his car felt dancing loose and they were just trying to figure out how to make runs and pass to put on a good race.

2 things about the heat in the car

1) why would you run the exhaust under the driver

2) drivers/teams need to watch how much they complain about the heat inside the car because they've always sacrificed driver comfort and heat for increased aero. Safety has always be a priority.....until it costs you in speed

Well, that does help check the "make them harder to drive!" box.

The problem with the exhaust is it enclosed in a box which creates radiant heat that has no where to go since no air flow past it. I'd guess they need to get air flow into that box. Kind of screws up the whole smooth bottom of the car idea. The exhaust running out both sides was a bad idea. I know some of you like the sound but if drivers can't finish races it doesn't matter.

Apparently RCR found something late in the day that helped. Not sure if exhaust heat ventilation or just better ****pit venting?
