Tony Stewart running over someone?

I'm glad Tony made the choice not to race, rather he meant to or not it's probably not a good idea to get behind the wheel after something like that.

Race starts at 1.
NASCAR star Tony Stewart will be having a press conference today at 1:00 PM ET to express his side on the death of Kevin Ward Jr., a 20-year-old race car driver, according to a report.
Not sure how reliable that source is or if the press conference will even happen now that Tony isn't racing today. If I am wrong on this, I apologize. The last thing I want to do at a time like this is spread misinformation.

Anyway, full article here:

Whether the accident was Stewart's fault or Ward's fault is irrelevant at this time. What is relevant is that a young man got his life taken away from him far too soon by something that could easily have been avoided on both ends. Today is not a day for blame; today is a day to mourn the loss of a fellow racer, to offer our condolences to his family, and to memorialize him in today's race.

R.I.P. Kevin Ward (1994-2014). Another racer gone too soon.

I don't think anyone here thinks Tony malicously killed the kid. While I don't agree with Ward being right on the racing groove, Stewart has pretty much done the same before and been lucky as have probably thousands of others. It needs to be stopped.

we know that he is up there Dale, Adam, Alan, Davey, and everyone else taken too soon

I am deeply ashamed and embarrassed for those that would have so much hate for Smoke to even harbor a thought that he would intentionally try and hurt another human being. That is what is truly sickening about this whole ordeal, y"all need to get a life and seek forgiveness.
Indeed, Wingnut. Tony is one of those people who wear their heart on their sleeve. Those who think he set out to kill the young man --- please think again.

No one is dancing on the grave. If I die doing something stupid I hope that people point out my stupidity and try and learn from it. The kid is dead. Gone. Forever. My opinions posted on this board won't change that. I stand by everything I said. The dude effed up but doesn't have to deal with the consequences of his stupidity. It's not fair but that's how it goes.

I just think you can do better, and make the same points without being as insulting. Especially knowing the Ward family is going through hell right now. Darwin analogies, "moron, idiot" is just to much. Why try to intensify the pain.

I will leave it at that I have spoke my mind, carry on if you must. I do not want to make TRLs job any harder.

Actually it's not clear from the video if this could have been easily avoided by Stewart. That video is inconclusive. It's possible that Stewart didn't see Ward until the last moment -- black firesuit at night on a poorly lit track, as the car in front of Stewart swerved out of the way, revealing Ward. It's possible Stewart had no idea that Ward had run down the track to yell at him and didn't see him until it was too late.

We know there was at least one hothead decision, Ward running down the track. It's not clear if Stewart compounded that with another hothead decisions, though he might have.

Stewart is front page story on FoxNews, CNN, Drudge, HuffPo, even BBC News.
Nascar always craves mainstream media attention. Probably not like this, though.

You missed my point entirely. I'm saying that we should save playing the "blame game" for another day. Today's focus should be on the poor individual that lost his life in the accident.

One of the worst nights of sleep I can remember. Thought that waking up today might spell this thing out to me more. It didn't. This is still surreal.

Thank you. I am deeply saddened by this tragic event and today's race just isn't all that important to me right now.

No I understood your point and was correcting your falsehood.

You said the incident could have easily been avoided by both sides. That's not something you can know with any degree of confidence at this point and the evidence I've seen indicates you are likely wrong.

Forgiveness for what exactly? Stewart isn't a victim here.

Through all of this I hope I can avoid seeing the video I have so far. Someone has already sent me a text, but I didnt click the link. Maybe I will later but for now I just do not want too see it.
I am watching the prerace show though.

People that have seen it seem to have different opinions on it, I dont think it will help.

Nevermind I just saw it on ESPN.

It'll be impossible to stay away from it. The video is playing everywhere. American media is disgusting.

Plus, Tony was probably looking at the kids car sitting on the track and never expected him to be standing in the middle of the track. I wonder if anyone has even considered that Tony might have been going for the brake to stop and hit the gas instead. I thought he did that on pit road a few years back in a Cup car.

So what do y'all think the fallout is going to be?

Honestly, I see sponsors fleeing from Tony Stewart, no one wants to be associated with the guy who killed a man, accident or not. He may have to sell his half of Stewart-Haas Racing, not sure on that one. I just don't see Tony returning to the #14 after this season IMHO.
I have no idea, man.

It's probably still too early to speculate on any of that. That being said, given this age of instant information and social media that we're living in today, what you're suggesting will happen is certainly not unfeasible. Everybody tends to have knee-jerk reactions to stuff like this, and as @Smoke14 alluded to, in the modern-day court of public opinion, people will hold a trial for, convict, and sentence a guy within mere hours of an incident taking place. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail all the way around, and hopefully once all the facts come in, my belief that this was just an unfortunate, terrible tragedy will be confirmed. The only thing I can say for certain is that we shall see.

I'm glad Tony isn't racing today. I hadn't thought about the angle that @Get That 88 Up There !! brought up, that maybe Tony would have wanted to win the race for Kevin Ward. I could certainly understand and respect that, and if anyone would have that mentality, it would be Tony. Ultimately, though, he made the right decision IMHO.

It's always amazing how few of the people here actually seem to understand anything about racing.

It seems that YOU know nothing.
Look, we all make mistakes. Mistakes are made and there are consequences for such mistakes. Would you expect someone to be that close to you on a poorly lot track at that. Passion and emotions just exubes for out of Kevin in the video.

Realize this "idiot" you call that man was my age, 20. He's gone and no lnger on this earth. Don't act like a scumbag about it, show some respect because at the end of the day. Tony will have to live with this over his head for the rest of his life.

Learn something about respecting others before talking down on us about knowing racing. If you knew so.much, be a driver yourself. Put yourself in their shoes and deal with something with the immense magnitude of this situation...

Obvious points.

Racing is dangerous and as a driver you know you are putting your life in danger at every race.
I cant point a finger at Tony and I do not think a crime occurred.

I hope his sponsors will not abandon him. They may for PR reasons but I think that would be wrong.

Coors didn't leave Sterling after the death of Sr.
I see no reason why a cup sponsor would leave because of this accident in a sprint car.
Did Petty lose sponsors when his drag car went into the crowd and killed a 11 year old boy?

A man is dead and only an ******* would already be passing judgement on a situation they have no clue about the facts. If the shoe fits...............

Ok, first off, ******* ain't much different from *******...let's see how that plays out, k?

Anyhow, I don't see anyone doing anything more than speculating on here, yourself included. No one of us know what 'thoughts were harbored' by anyone involved. Not me, not you either.

My anger is subsiding over this senseless incident. Now I just feel bad for Tony and Ward's family. What upset me most are the people blaming Tony. Some called him a murderer, some worse things were said.
