2014 Daytona - Coke Zero 400 - Pre Race Thread

They should dump qualifying all around and treat all qualifying as if it were called for rain. Lineup would be based on speed in last run practice. No BS timed sessions, no sitting on pit road waiting for the last 20 seconds, no more wasted time for the fans waiting to see who leaves pit road last.

they used more braking today during Daytona qualifying than they used at Sonoma a couple weeks ago

Well anyway, that is what Kenny Wallace said, no pushing, so now that I think about it Kenny is the only one I heard say that. Hell, the jet dryers are going to get more laps in than the cars anyway it looks like.

It was suggested before...do we really think half the field was sand bagging?
Dammit DP

"What a mess this is," said Brian Vickers, who missed on making the first 24-driver cut. "I mean, what do you do? ... I can't believe someone hasn't wrecked, to be honest with you."

The unusual strategy plays made for some unusual names atop the leaderboard after the first of three scheduled sessions, with Gilliland, Sorenson, Cassill and Labonte forming a fast nose-to-tail quartet to sweep the top four spots. It also created dicey conditions with cars running at widely varying speeds on the track's multiple lanes, including one instance where a Kyle Larson-led pack nearly stopped at the pit road entrance.

"That was pretty dumb," said Joey Logano, who failed to make the final 12-driver cut for only the second time this season. "... Before you know it you're stopped on the race track and what do you do. It is what it is."

Joe Nemechek was the only driver who failed to qualify for the 43-car field

So, I though if qualifying was rain shortened, they line up based on practice speeds?
They're lining up based on first round Qfying speeds?

David Gilliland won the Coors Light Pole Award for the 56th Annual Coke Zero 400 with a lap of 45.153 seconds, 199.322 mph.
This is his third pole in 276 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.
This is his first pole and first top-10 start in 2014.:idunno:

This day in NASCAR history

7/5/08 = Kyle Busch wins at Daytona
7/5/03 = Greg Biffle gets 1st career win at Daytona
7/5/97= John Andretti gets 1st career win at Daytona

Let's cross our fingers that it stays this way.

How well I know, I'm proud to live here. :salute: It stayed perfect for the fireworks over the water last evening though. :D
Good to hear! I had planned to wake up early to do some surf fishin & looked out the window to see skies that match the color of my ex girlfriend's eyes. Nope nope nope.

I think Kenny had that wrong. I haven't heard anything about the Cup guys being able to do whatever in the hell they want. That's the NNS deal I think.

Yea Cup guys can push all they want but they run the risk of over heating & spinning another driver out.

That's what I thought. Couldn't believe that Kenny screwed that up. He isn't the first. Can't wait for the race tonight. Just love this stuff.

Wouldnt get your hopes up too fast. Expect after 10-15 laps to see the train along the high side. I'll still be here to watch it cuz I love nighttime plate races but that train annoys me :p Somebody do something

There will be a race where that will go away. Maybe tonight is the night!

I wonder if Eliminator boats still does the demo rides on the infield lake at Daytona? I remember them doing that for a few years as a partnership with the track? Not sure if anyone even cares? Lol
