2018 - Daytona 500 - Pre Race Thread

Lord NASCAR, grant us with more short tracks!

I actually disagree lol. I’d be pretty disappointed if they ever went to more than 3 short tracks for reasons similar to F1. These leagues are the pinnacle of motorsport and part of that is the absolute crazy speeds that are ran. While some of these tracks could have been better shaped (Darlington is 1.5er yet its beloved) too many short tracks would water it down. I remember Bubba Wallace after the truck race victory at MIS saying he forgot how slow the trucks were. While they do put on a hell of a show, the real separation occurs when they’re turning 203-204 at a 2 mile facility

Fast speeds does not always = into good racing.

The NFL is the pinnacle of football, but they still play on a 120 yard field in the NFL, same as they do in Varsity.

I think I'm just fond of tradition when it comes to my NASCAR. I missed the Clash/Shootout being broadcast on Saturday night rather than Sunday afternoon. Same with the upcoming Duel/Twin races on Thursday. All those February Thursday's that I called in sick for over the years. Yeah, I get the reason's for the move(s) although I don't think it really accomplished anything, especially with the dwindling audience. Doesn't really matter though, I'll still be there to watch regardless of when they're on. There's still something to say for tradition though.

You know ball and stick sports are different

It’s not always about the great racing because this is the highest level in the world. Look I’m not saying I don’t love short tracks, but and some of the racing on 1.5ers can be absolutely terrible. But the thing that separates NASCAR from other forms of stock car racing is its flat out speeds

This make's zero sense:eek:, you would rather have terrible racing at hight speeds, than better racing at slower speeds, yeah no, I cant even , nope, notta, wow.

If racing in a fishbowl was so popular it would be rapidly overtaking other forms of racing. It isn't. Tracks are closing right and left.

Can someone explain to me the duels please.. so u do qualifying but it don’t matter? Because the duels is what position u in the 500? I’m so confused lol..

Qualifying sets the front row and the Duels set the rest of the field.

Used to be that you raced your way in through the Duels but that element was rendered useless by the charters.

Everyone will just ride around single file all race trying not to wreck. There's no reason to risk wrecking a racecar to race hard on Thursday.

Sunday's Q locks in only the front two positions for the Daytona 500. For everyone, it determines where they will in Thursday's Duels; even-numbered qualifiers in one race, odd numbers in the other. Finishing position in the Duels determines where everyone else starts the D500. It doesn't matter where the fastest two qualifiers finish in the Duels because they're locked into the front row regardless (assuming they don't have to go to backup cars).

Until recently, there were more cars attempting to get into the D500 than we have today. Having 50 cars or more was common. If you didn't finish well in your Duel, you wouldn't make the main race. Over the past few years, fewer cars have been showing up so there's been less pressure on finishing the Duels. This year, with only 40 cars entered, everyone will make it to the D500. There's no chance the Duels will eliminate anyone.

While the Duels will determine where each driver starts the D500, my personal opinion is that where a car qualifies at a plate race is far less significant that non-plate tracks. As Andy said, there's no motivation to do well beyond the normal driver's desire to win. In this particular case, that's outweighed by the need to keep the car in one piece for Sunday.

If you want tradition, move the Clash back to a 12:05 start and make it 20 laps again. I believe Terry Labonte holds the all time clash record, winning it in 15 minutes, 19 seconds in 1985. By 12:30, CBS was covering college basketball.

The pole qualifying sets the front row. In the old days the duels set positions 3-30, the rest of the field fell back on their qualifying speed. There was a past Champions provisional that NASCAR implemented somewhere around 1986 or so. They started that to make sure A big name driver wouldn't miss a race. I think this is all fairly close. Feel free to make corrections.

Did this because I hate Fox's sidebar so much.

This is basically the ticker TNN used 20 years ago.

The old format was complicated to figure out but it made the Duels exciting.

The sidebar with a bit of tweaking will be much better than what they had. Viewers can see the whole field's position at a glance. The one last year was a joke. They were showing on camera the leaders and the leaderboard up top had the same thing.

I'd rather see more of the actual cars on the track and less of the graphic. If I wanted to look at a graphic of the field, I'd be on line.

Works for me. I would suggest those watching on a flip phone or a tablet acquire a flat screen TV set :p:D

I think the pylon needs work, but I like being able to see more than 5 positions at a time, especially when they start the ticker over while I'm trying to locate a specific car.ARRRRGH!

82,000 people attended the 2012 Budweiser Shootout.
If that same crowd were at Daytona Sunday, it would've been almost a full house. Instead, 7500 people max.
The fans have spoken. Also, I haven't heard of a sellout yet for the 500. When is the last time the 500 didn't sell out?

Turn 1 Lower/Middle/Upper all have tickets remaining, and Turn 4 Lower and Upper have tickets left. Upper and Middle Start/Finish Line has yet to sell out, but those all require 2- or 4-day package purchases.

The 500 has a 3 pm start time now. I've been given so many tickets that it's not even funny. I see the Rolex lounge, 500 club and presidents row still has tickets.

Silly Charile, wanting to see race cars on a TV screen.

(Yes, the new ticker sucks)
