2018 Martinsville - STP 500 - Pre Race Thread

Damn everybody going to Martinsville!!
I tell people that a Cup race at Bristol is like watching your favorite band playing a stadium with all the lasers, stage show special effects, 2-story speakers, etc. Martinsville is like you're sitting in your home town bar, and your favorite band drops in unscheduled to do a couple of sets for the fans where they got their start back in the day.

NWS at 4:00 pm today. I telling ya, plan on a double! :)

Saturday
A chance of snow before 10am, then rain. High near 39. East wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
Saturday Night
Rain and snow before 11pm, then snow between 11pm and midnight, then rain and snow after midnight. Low around 32. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
Sunday
Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42.

Those races are going to look great on my flat screen can't take the old man too cold for him. Not feeling the 25 degree wind chill by myself. Damn I know they got a contract or whatever but wouldn't a June race Under The Lights be awesome

Yeah, at 84, my father can't tolerate sitting for hours on an aluminum bench, even under good conditions. I just spoke with him and he was laughing about being at Bristol for that snowstorm. Frankly, I'll probably be less than comfortable, but I haven't been there in several years, I get the hotel free, and I'm going to take advantage even if it means icicles hanging off my headset.

I'm 23, and I remember those Holiday Inn Express commercials.

Well, at least a few of them. There are a few on YouTube I've never seen before.

Can that "Redneck Weather Rope" predict the future?

Didn't think so. :)

I mean, it also can't predict the present. I've seen sunny and -5 degrees before.

Well said well said!! I love them both it’s so hard to pick!!

So if it’s no qualifying who starts on pole?
I --think-- the current procedure is that if there is no Q, they'll start on based on fastest practice speeds.

I --KNOW-- if qualifying AND practice are all cancelled, they start based on current owner points standings. Those usually match the driver points, so Harvick, Kyle Busch, Logano, Kez, etc.

Storyline - Cool temps, hot action expected at Martinsville:Temperatures at Martinsville Speedway are not expected to get above the low 50-degree range this weekend, which in the past would have made it difficult for the track to take on rubber. Goodyear tested prior to the 2017 spring race and made an adjustment to the tread compound on the right-side tire to address just that. With Martinsville's two NASCAR weekends being run very early and very late in the season, cooler temperatures are the norm. The track's corners are concrete, which is more dense than the asphalt straightaways, making it more difficult for rubber to continuously adhere to the track surface. As last year's races proved, the new compound performed as expected, laying more rubber and creating multiple racing grooves and more side-by-side racing.
"This weekend, the temperatures in Southern Virginia are going to be what we've come to expect this time of year," said Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of racing. "It's more difficult for track surfaces -- especially concrete - to take rubber in cooler temperatures. We formulated this right-side compound to lay more rubber in these types of conditions, and we got some great results right out of the box. Martinsville has tight corners and has always produced great racing, but being able to get the concrete surface to take rubber and create a second groove really enhanced things."

Notes - Goodyear returns to Martinsville on successful tire set-up:Teams in both the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will run the same tire set-up at Martinsville this weekend . . . this is the same tire set-up these teams ran twice at this track in 2017 . . . this left-side tire code (D-4588) has been run at this track since April 2013, while this right-side tire code (D-4722) debuted last April . . . this is the only track at which NASCAR teams will run either of these two tire codes . . . as on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Martinsville.

Jayski ... thanks

I'm skiing in Vermont this weekend...30 degrees and cloudy...I'll trade with y'alll!!! :D

Seriously though...I feel bad for everyone involved in this race weekend. Either the snow is less than expected and the inch or two that does fall melts Sunday AM and we go racing in the PM...or the track gets blanketed with 6"+ and there's no race Sunday...or Monday...or Tuesday...til it all melts.

This was destined to happen sooner rather than later. Martinsville has the two worst dates on the schedule and it's been a miracle they haven't been snowed out yet. A few years ago, it dropped a foot of snow just a few days before the race. A couple years before that, it started snowing an hour after the race ended.

Well guys looks like Nor'easter Toby will have his way in VA for this weekend. Myrtle Beach Speedway has the CARS tour Saturday night a bunch of late model teams that have had their local races canceled are entered. No chance of snow, high 50s/low 60s

It's such a tough call as to what to do. With some of these snowfall predictions people need to worry about travel conditions. I'm a bit nervous driving down Saturday since 81 could be a nightmare the closer I get to Roanoke. Then who knows what the logistics will be like getting to the track Sunday. I'm from Northern PA so we got all the heavy duty snow moving/removal equipment. I know SW Virginia gets snow but they're resources might be a little thinner.

This just sucks all the way around.

I'm not buying it. The weather guys have been absurdly wrong all winter, usually projecting wayyyy more snowfall than what actually happens. It might spit a little sleet or snow Saturday night but I doubt it's anything significant.

It looks like Armageddonweatherforecasting.com has taken over the pre-race thread again. If you dare to make the trek to Martinsville this weekend, please think safety. Mittens. Hand warmers. Tire chains are a must. I hear kitty litter, or was it dead kittens, works good for traction when you get stuck. Keep plenty of milk, bread, & eggs on hand. Never know when you'll want to make an omelet. Be careful out there people!

I see what you did there, every single one of 'em. Will he be driving the L. L. Bean pace car?

Looks like the forecasters are all over the board on this one. 6:00 am Friday forecast from NWS
Saturday
A chance of rain and snow before 10am, then rain. High near 41. Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
Saturday Night
Rain before 4am, then a chance of rain and snow. Low around 32. Northeast wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
Sunday

A chance of rain and snow before 10am, then a slight chance of rain between 10am and 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42. Northeast wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

NWS rarely goes "all-in" on rain though. I'm going to South Boston Saturday night and am VERY concerned about the forecast.

Last time I went to South Boston
went to a Saturday night race then went to Wilkesboro without a ticket
bought a ticket from a Elliot fan, top row seat at finish line
Davey beat out Bill Elliot
Elliot fan was not AMUSED

after the race as I was walking away from track, a mini van was slowly coming out from the track in the line of traffic
Richard Petty was driving mini van, every time traffic stopped he signed autographs
he just ran 500 laps and was driving home!!!

Sometimes around here we get a forecast of a foot of snow and it ends up being a dusting. Other days it's forecasted to be sunny and I'll wake up having to dig myself out. I try not to pay too much attention :idunno: Even the most reliable weather models are correct something like only 75% of the time

I'll be making the trip down -- if it snows it snows. Monday looks good either way (hopefully they're right about that)

When Bill Elliott won at Bristol I saw Richard driving out of the track, I also saw Bobby Allison laying down in a passenger seat. I thought that was kind of funny.

Good thing I'd set down my coffee cup, dpk, otherwise you'd owe me a new keyboard.
Nothing like a good belly laugh to start off the morning.

Well, since I was in the neighborhood I figured I might as well stop by and see the Rock.
Interesting how we have The Lady in Black and the Rock vs Auto Club Speedway and ISM, whatever that is.
