2018 Martinsville - STP 500 - Pre Race Thread

I disagree. Cancel it now and I guarantee you more people would be there on the open date and probably warmer
As far as NASCAR is concerned, the next open date is Monday, not the Saturday of Easter weekend. With Martinsville being so close to Charlotte, Tuesday is probably in play too.

I live in Pennsylvania. I'm looking @ 3 inches of snow outside my window right now. Had much more on the ground/roads the past couple days. Long time season ticket holder of Bristol and Martinsville. I've towed my 5er to/from both Bristol & Martinsville for years through far worse conditions than I see them calling for. Many here seems like they are in a panic mode yet every single forecast that I see for the area is hardly calling for any accumulation.
Well they might get it might not but people will have to make those travel decisions. My point is we probably wouldnt have to worry about it next week. I'm not thinking about me cause it wont effect me.

I didnt say make up date would be on the open weekend, said it would be better. Difference.

I live in PA too. It's been a brutal March. We've been hit by 3-4 different Nor'Easters in Northeast PA. Had about 35" of snow in my backyard this month. There was a really bad one a couple of weeks ago. People were stranded on I-380 and I-84 for hours. Folks were abandoning their cars and walking to seek help. Areas of the Pocono's were without power for more than a week. It was a complete disaster. I'm not saying that will happen this weekend but there is certainly the potential for variables out of one's control when it comes to travel. Common sense and safety is priority #1....

I lived in Bozeman,MT for a few years and spent a ton of time in Syracuse. I know snow but also know humans...lol

I80 was shutdown a couple weeks ago when we came back from Philly. Had to head south a little to head west. When we got back on I80 we passed utility truck after utility truck heading east to restore power. Saw that several times over this past winter. We travel a lot between western PA & New York, New Jersey & Philly. Always across I80.

For you Virginia travelers..... http://www.511virginia.org/

Use it. It's a helluva service for traveling. I think every state has their own version. Just search for 511 and the state name. Chances are there is an app for your phone. When you run it, it knows where you are. It will update you real time on changing road conditions. It is free as well.

I think Google has a real time map also that alerts you about wrecks and delays

Okay, I understand your point better now, although I still don't agree. Regardless, we both know that's not going to happen.
It wont, but Next Saturday shows sunny and 60. I'd bet the ranch it would have a better crowd. Then again I'm just thinking about my fellow Spotters who will be up there on Sunday if they get this going. Its brutal, especially if its windy.

You actually got a refund for a race that hasnt been called? You are a lucky fella.

I'm a little behind, but I just saw the expected weather. I'm done taking guesses as to whether we'll get it in as I'm usually wrong, but it'll definitely be tough.

Should have stayed out west, did Texas, come back east for the Easter Break, then Martinsville and Bristol.

Easy.
Problem with heading to Texas, you will be visiting 4 of your worst races within a six week period. They have already shedded half of their audience since Daytona, now you going to replace a decent race at martinsville, with what will likely be a bad race at Texas, plus a week off for Easter. The rating after their week off will rival their July/August numbers.

Texas has higher ratings than Martinsville, a much higher purse also FWIW. So it makes sense to go all the way from the west coast to the east coast for Martinsville, and then clean back to Texas after Easter Break. Makes a whole lot more sense to take the Texas race, do Easter break and then Martinsville.

Problem with Texas is, it could just as easily have rained there this weekend.

instead of snow? got ya. 75 now, 88 tomorrow
Rain, snow; NASCAR won't race in either. But nobody could know what the weather would be like at either track when they put the schedule together last summer. Saying they should have run at X Motor Speedway this weekend because it isn't raining there is just 20/20 hindsight.

I believe you got off topic. It was a logistical statement. Much cheaper to take in Texas on the way back from the coast instead of yo yo ing back from Martinsville to Texas and then back again to the East coast.

Ah. I lost you somewhere.

Still, now that I understand your position, I question it. I know the people all come home. Do teams use the same two cars at all three of the Western Swing tracks? Maybe I'm mistaken again, but I thought the haulers came all the way back to Charlotte between races. If that is indeed the case, how does going to Texas instead of M'ville save money?

You will have to do the math and the miles but it is around 2200 miles more to go to Martinsville and back to Texas and back to Charlotte. The haulers are lucky to get 6.5 MPG. Longer time on the road overall for everybody coming back out to Texas and back. Martinsville and Bristol the next week if they were moved together are all close to Charlotte for easy home time.

I think you're right on this one, given the flexibility of the upcoming open weekend. However, Fox would have to be on board as well. They probably should be, given the likelihood of delays.

Truck race looks good. They could move the start up on the cup race and try to go for half way or more. It would make the shorter race people happy that way. :D

The top teams have what they have dubbed, swap out haulers, they carry about between 4-6 cars, and they do what the name says, they swap out cars between the three west coast races, a lot of the smaller teams do not so they do in fact use the same cars between each race.
Here is some of HMS's swap out haulers

Thanks. You cleared up my misunderstanding.

Next question

How cold before the Goodyear tires lose grip? I know the pirrellis that came with my Camaro ss lost grip somewhere around 38 to 40 degrees.

Well, since I was in the neighborhood I figured I might as well stop by and see the Rock.
Interesting how we have The Lady in Black and the Rock vs Auto Club Speedway and ISM, whatever that is.

What time were you there? If you saw a big ploom of smoke about a mile or 2 from the race track that was us!
