2018 Martinsville - STP 500 - Pre Race Thread

What time were you there? If you saw a big ploom of smoke about a mile or 2 from the race track that was us!

Around 10:30...I saw smoke several times during day, just don't recall when. Were you all roasting hot dogs?

Anybody know the snow clearing capabilities of the DOTs in Virginia? Two feet drop in my parts and the roads will stay relatively clear. But obviously 6 inches without the necessary plow equipment can turn the roads into a nightmare

Besides the road conditions, what issues arise with allocation of emergency resources? Can/will the state/local police even be able to assist in security and traffic control or will they be needed to help with storm related issues?

This not your typical "went to a NASCAR race and it rained". There are many layers to this.

Understood. Just trying to understand how big of of a deal this is for the area. Most accumulation I’ve seen forecasted for the area (away from the tack) is 9 inches, which is pretty normal around me and doesn’t cause many traffic issues. They play football games in blizzards with traffic control.

You must live in an area where snow is handled EXTREMELY well. I've spent a bunch of time where it really snows (Syracuse, Buffalo and Bozeman, MT) along with the Scranton, PA area and 9" of snow causes major headaches if it sticks to the road in all those places.

I'm currently typing this in a Syracuse hoadie as I watch their game against Duke. Numerous time winner of the annual "Snow Globe Award".

Lived in cuse for the majority of my life. I’m probably exaggerating a bit about minimal traffic issues, but at least when we get dumped on overnight the roads are usually good within a few hours after it stops.

Falling apart here....I had hope at the start of the first half :(

I was up there for the BC game in January and the NC State game on Valentine's Day. I've had many crazy drives on 81 to and from Syracuse. You get those heavy lake effect snow bands and all hell breaks loose. I had tickets to the Bills-Colts game this year and had to eat the tickets to that too because of the epic snow that day! They said it was the worst snow storm ever for a Bills game. That's saying something! Went the next week against the Dolphins!!

I've been to 100 Cup races and never had an issue with snow. I was part of the Pocono fiasco (1st time ever both events rained out at same track, plus the IndyCar race as a bonus!) in 2016. I've had tropical storms/hurricane leftovers at Dover in September, fog at Pocono, holes in the wall at Pocono, electrical storm at Daytona but nothing like this.

That’s colts game was insane. Remember watching on TV and there were periods of just nothing but white haha.

I’ll be staying in NC about 45 minutes away from the track where it’s forecasted to be 80 and sunny. I’ll monitor from there in my shorts.

The mostrich unusual Cup cancellation for me was the wild fires that cancelled the first Daytona night race.

What? I live in MA. 9 inches is a blessing. We have had 3 snow storms the last three weeks.

The first two accumulated about a foot each. We have also had two other similar storms this year.

Seeing a warning or a big deal over 9 inches of snow seems cartoonish where I live.

Should be on the road within the hour!

Cooler is ready.....

It's a beautiful morning here in Columbus. A little frosty, but comfortable. Hoping for a bit of luck with the weather in Virginia today!

Snazzy looking keyring you have on the cooler zipper. :D

...where I live.
It's all relative. For places that only see a couple of inches every few years, it's not worth the taxpayer and utility company dollars to buy the equipment necessary to deal with it efficiently. People don't have enough opportunity to develop the skills to drive safely.

Of course, two snowflakes and a sleet pellet in Atlanta is the End Of The World because that's where the Weather Channel is based. ;)

Truex looking strong!! Dude isn’t going anywhere this year either lol!! I know Kyle Busch and Adam Stevens have to be up all night thinking how truex and his team are getting it done ..

I noticed it last week. The Yoters have tweaked the front end on both sides of the splitter compared to the other brands

Yea that’s the question I asked before the season started.. I heard they was making some changes to the nose of car, what’s the difference though I haven’t spotted it

look on both sides of the splitter. The body work is lower than the splitter.

means a whole lot of things. Dollars to dollars for one thing. Trucks have a fraction of the budget. They are a really good cheap short track piece.

I wonder if running Eldora every year has improved the speed of the trucks. Making a car that heavy be able to run on dirt well has probably improved overall handling quite a bit on all short track racing
