My son and I are making the drive from Columbia SC as we are visiting my sick mother in law.It is my first drive to Darlington from this direction, any help with best routes I would appreciate. Thanks
There are two main parking lots. One is behind the front stretch, you'll want that one if you're in Brasington, or in Tyler / Wallace from about the middle to turn 1 end of those grandstands. If that's you, just stay on I-20 and follow the signs (exit 134 or there abouts). Be aware there's a traffic circle between I-20 and the track. Also, traffic out of this lot is routed toward Florence after the race, so you may want the other lot even if you're in the grandstands I named above.
The other is behind turns 3 and 4, if you're in Pearson, Colvin, or the turn 4 end of Tyler / Wallace. If that's you, get off I-20 in Bishopville on US 15 North / SC 34. After about 14 miles, at an intersection with a light, US 15 will turn left; don't turn but stay straight on SC 34. After another 4 miles or so, SC 34 will making a sharp curve to the right and merge with four-laned SC 151.
Notice the gas station at this intersection so you can find the turn again after the race. Follow the traffic to the track on the right. If you miss the gas station on the way home, go another 3 miles or so and you can pick up US 15 South in Hartsville.
Two years ago I got to the track around 2:00 and parked off the front stretch. That lot filled around 3 or 3:30. Last year I parked off turns 3 and 4. It's a bigger lot and didn't fill until around 4 or 4:30. If you get there early enough, the museum under the backstretch grandstands is a treat, but it's usually crowded on race day.
There's a back way into the front stretch lot from this side that was worth the trouble when this was a day race. It's not worth it now that the traffic has all day to trickle in.
Oh, and have a great time!
