Bonehead of the week: Bristol II

So Kyle was assaulted and responded.

No punishment required.

Now you went and messed up some great Busch bash :(
Not going to happen. The statement by the speedway puts an end to it.
The only reason to keep harping on this is to bait his fans and his non-fans.

I don't want members to start throwing flames at each other because they believe one way or the other.

NASCAR is starting to circle the wagons, get a story out, in an attempt to get in front of this situation. No matter what it looks bad. Oh, brother.

You have one of the top drivers in the sport jumping into the face and then chest bumping that fan in a physical altercation. NASCAR needs to look at the other sports for a lesson on what to do and the rules to implement for future issues like this one. For example, in basketball this is an automatic fine to a game suspension for the player involved no matter if he was in the right because a fan put hands on him or in the wrong if he was an idiot and reacted to some type of verbal taunt.

NASCAR needs to forget about its roots in situations like this one. This isn't the 1940's/50's/60's/70's anymore, and we aren’t running moonshine in the Carolina's. At a minimum, the sport attempting to react to situations like we are still within those backward eras is bad optics. Go and read some of the comments on social media about the video. You have idiots at Bowman Grey acting like children in vehicles that cause a police officer to feel like his and other people's lives were in danger causing him to draw his duty weapon and point it at one of the drivers that was involved. You have fans that are attempting to fight drivers. Now we have a driver who was drawn into and got involved in a physical altercation with a fan. That's super for the sport that has dwindling attendance and ratings. Yep, lets set-up an environment that new fans will pass on buying tickets to the show. That's what this situation has done.

Maybe it is time to set time limits, i.e., no sales with 50-100 laps to go, on alcohol sales at the tracks and the tracks to stop allowing the fans to bring it in. When the NFL started having issues they implemented some rules around the products. NASCAR needs to move into the current century and bring its fans along. The only way the sport survives is to bring in a new generation. Parents aren't going to bring their kids into an environment where fights take place; drunken fans roam the tracks and spew all sorts of inappropriate language. They'll spend their money in other places. That's how they vote.

The drunken fans are slowly making driver access less and less .. soon it will be thru bulletproof glass only.

Where are those fellow racers in the video?
Dont know, didnt ask. I cant be 100% sure if they were or were not standing there or talked to someone who was. I know this, they arent liars. Why do you ask?

Just wondering. Situations like this easily turn into he said she said game of telephone & the facts get highly twisted. Any account not from an eyewitness is likely false.

I dont see Kyle coming out of the golf cart unless he or someone he was with was touched or hit not just someone heckling him. I've been through that area many times, before the race its not to bad but after the race the things people say are ridiculous. I came around after the race was over one time ( like an idiot I drove my golf cart up to the elevator that takes us up to the spotters area so I had to drive it back) as I was walking back in to the track people are lining the fence screaming at people going in and out and one guy yelled at me and asked who I worked for, I didnt say anything and he says "f*** you, you think youre better then all of us dont ya"? So I turned around and said " no I dont, you help pay my salary". He said F U again. Not sure why.

All I'm going to say is who took more crap from loud mouth fans for 20 years than Jeff Gordon did? Who raised the ire of more fans of other drivers than Dale Earnhardt? And yet, you didn't see stuff like this happening. I'm just going to suggest that if Kyle wants to continue to be a lightning rod for fan rage, he MIGHT want to invest in some security, something like some uniformed police officers who could defuse incidents like this BEFORE they escalate. I had a nice talk many years ago (96-97?) with a Marion County (IN) Sheriff's Deputy who was tasked with escorting Jeff Gordon everywhere he went the entire race weekend at Indy to protect him from his detractors AND his fans.

"As Busch then prepared to leave in his golf cart.."

Well, we know that part isn't true. The video shows him jump out of the moving cart and running back to get in the guys face.
I tuned into both NAS America and Race Hub, and both cut out that part of the video and started their stories "As KB was signing autographs..." and showed the guy move Kyles arm without showing KB chest bumping him before that.

If the guy touched Kyle as he rode by and then KB jumped out to confront him, just say that. I would be OK with banning the idiot fan from all tracks.

And people wonder why the tracks aren't sold out anymore? LOL

Kyle Busch is a sports professional. Hes supposed to know that hes gonna have cash ****tt talked to him weekend and week out.

He got in a fan's face here in the south. In a lot of places he would've got laid out. I'm sure his security team would've whooped my ass but I'd have rocked him if he got in my face like that

Lol no you wouldn't have. Nice try

Kyle Busch and the spectator aren't on the same plane. "They were both in the wrong" doesn't cut it. NASCAR can't control the potential bad behaviors of hundreds of thousands of customers. It can exert control over the conduct of its athletes.

I would be sympathetic to Busch if he'd been forced into a scenario to be in close quarters with a drunk belligerent fan who assaulted him. He wasn't forced to stop the cart and physically approach and confront the drunken fool. Whatever happened previously or subsequently to that decision does not absolve that severe error in judgment.

Is it the end of the world? No. But NASCAR should have no hesitance to respond firmly and set the right precedent that more is expected of star drivers in these situations.

I’ve often wondered why NASCAR doesn’t have Kyle rendered unconscious as soon as he exits his car st the end of every race.

It would be a simple matter to have Kyle, his wife and little Brexton air-lifted off each of the properties within minutes.

Nothing that drastic is needed, IMO. Unfortunately, this incident may tighten the security around all drivers and reduce the interaction with the fans.
I would really hate to see our sport turn into the "do not go near" of other sports. That closeness is one thing that sets our sport apart.

On the other hand, I wouldn't blame the drivers if they wanted extra security.

I'm sure there were probably many drunk fans in the stands as well as sober ones who would have liked to have punched Kyle after the race, but I just hope whatever happens after the race doesn't change the way he drives during the race. He surely adds the excitement to NASCAR.

Sites like this would wither and die. Bob Pockrass would be out of a job. Dogs and cats living together...

Turn down the volume if you don't like offensive language.

KB looks pretty aggressive.

NASCAR Nation looks really good in that video. My God.

That is not NASCAR Nation, Rev --- I beg to differ.
That is one person, with probably too much alcohol courage, acting like an ass.
I consider myself a member of NASCAR Nation and that is not representative of my behavior at the track. Please don't
paint all fans with the same tarbrush.

I have a feeling that there has already been or will be a very severe tongue lashing coming young Mr. Busch's way that we'll never hear about. Nascar knows that they have to get a handle on this. That's probably why the spin doctors are already at work. Banning the drunk is a good idea.

As far as I'm concerned, end of story.
Okay, I'm officially revoking anything I've said on this one, including any previous revocations.
And people wonder why the tracks aren't sold out anymore? LOL
Boorish fan behavior was at the same levels when the tracks were selling out. If anything, they've improved since I started attending in '95.

It certainly can. Close the infields. But I don't care about access to drivers or autographs or selfies, so that's easy for me to say. Or any use for alcohol, for that matter.

I like a nice buzz as much as the next guy but I can’t imagine a scenario where I’d harass/attack a celebrity or pro sports athlete.

Seems to me like a similar situation as Denny at martinsville, Stenhouse at Daytona must have had his security more together he almost wrecked the whole field and got out of there fine.

The statement by the speedway puts an end to it.
.

Sorry TRL, but when I'm interested in what actually happened in a situation, a press release put out by somebody that has an image to protect is not real high on my list of sources.

No problem. But unless new video surfaces that shows something different, it's still a matter of conjecture exactly what happened. I'll take
the speedway statement at face value unless PROVED otherwise.

I'll agree that the video really doesn't answer many questions, and you're right, everything at this point is conjecture. I'm just pointing out that I don't put much stock in the press release. The speedway doesn't want to admit any failure on their part, and they don't want to antagonize a star driver. If they can "confine" the bad behavior to one unruly person, they also avoid angering their customers, the fans.

Understand completely.

I'll tell you this, more people are mad at the jackass filming it and the jackass who confronted Kyle. I dont care who you pull for, those two are lowlife scumbags. Bristol doesnt have to worry about people being mad at them.
