Cable cutters, rejoice

Went and looked at band saw & drill press guy was selling. Been used heavily. I passed. Don't really need either of them. Want but don't need. I'll wait and one day just go buy a new drill press. Can't get anything under 150 bucks that's worth carrying home IMO. Hazzard Fright has some junk Chicago Electric stuff. I don't trust that crap. I'll pay 150 for a 30 year old tool, before 150 for one of those. Lots of that type of stuff is way below second rate. Nope. Don't need it that bad.

Turned on my TCL TV this morning. ---You have any trouble with that?

Have OTA as start-up. OTA = Over-The-Air or Antenna for the slow and weak minded!

Was playing Touched By An Angle...or something. =TV show Touched By An Angel was on. I like to twist the titles just a little to, again, confuse the weak minded.

Went to home screen to select Sling= HOME SCREEN ON SMART TV. It's where you pick the function, ie; OTA/Sling/Prime/Netflix/HULU/ etc...

Sling is a streaming service.

Did any of that help you?
 
I am just thankful that there are so big screens options now with a form factor for virtually any need.

I am also impressed with the commitment to go full high definition redneck. It looks like they did some good framing and mudd-work to fit in the hybrid flat screen.

That had to be a work of love or a personal commitment because I can't see a professional contractor agreeing to the project. Could you imagine the giggles while asking a high brow contractor to provide an estimate to frame it up to fit the TV. For some of the finer things in life you just have to do it yourself.

I started to give them a points deduction on the redneck scorecards for leaving the back of the TV exposed on the wall in the next room. They could have built in a fake closet with sliding doors to conceal or hide the backside of the set.

But what if they were proud of their backside and all the work and creativity they had put into the project. This way they can invite their friends over to watch the football game or race on their one of a kind TV, and show off the ass-end of the set during halftime or one of the stages. It also leaves a lot of open room for connecting other devices, cable or speaker wires etc... much more serviceable than most people will ever have the good fortune to experience.

So it all probably went great until they found out about sound bars, that would force them to design another cut out.....

It's already partially blocking the door to the left of it. Hiding the back would probably make that worse.

There have been fiber optic lines 5/10 of a mile from my home for 10 years and still not hooked up yet. Cable here sucks, out more than on (comcast), so satellite is how we go now. I am looking hard at Star Link and then go to streaming. I am hearing good things from folks that have it.
 
Downloaded and subscribed to YouTube TV this past week. Did so for the Sunday Ticket Package. Setting up all our TVs today to get ready for Football Sunday. One more TV to hang go. Will hang it later today.

A little info on the YouTube TV feed for those that might be interested. As I type, I’ve got 10 televisions streaming simultaneously. Not a hint of buffering. Their app seems to be very reliable. My cost, excluding Sunday Ticket is $95/month for an unlimited # of streaming connections in my home with a limit of 3 connections outside of my home anywhere in the US. Not available in Canada. I have other means in Canada so that’s not a concern. I’m going to stick with this service until the NFL season concludes. I’m then going to try out Fubo. None of these services have commitments. Simply a month to month service.

If anyone has any questions about YouTube TV and their service, give me a shout and I’ll answer the best I can. My exposure is so far limited to today’s experience.

How in the world do you watch 10 TV's at once?

One of my hunting camp friends has Star Link and You Tube TV, he loves it.

Eleven tv's in the house. Eight of which are in the 'Man Cave'. Those eight are all viewable from our L shaped sectional couch streaming sports galore. We've got enough couch space for twelve of us and it'll be a full house tomorrow for the games. There are nine 1pm NFL matchups tomorrow. I'm going to be one tv short unless I grab one off of the wall upstairs tomorrow to bring down temporally. While I can't physically watch that many at a time, I can watch any one of them I want without changing a channel. Screw the Redzone feed, we're already wall to wall full coverage in our own zone.

During our regular television viewing we're watching a single big screen. I was fortunate and married a woman that loves sports as much as I do. She was all in on the multiple television setup.

Isn't that due more to a solid high-speed Internet connection than the app itself? Is your service wired to your router or wireless?

I am thinking about switching from directtv to youtube for the cost advantages. We have a great internet signal.
Do you get the local NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox channels with the service or do you need an antenna for them.
One of my TVs gets WIFI I am unsure of the other one.
Do you get the youtube music service with the deal to stream on a smartphone as well.

Wireless. Some apps are more labor intensive. I was never able to stream like that using the Dish Anywhere or Direct TV apps with the same internet connection. I'm sure others work as well as YouTube TV. I was just passing along what I'm experiencing with the service in case anyone else was thinking of cutting the cord.

I do get all the locals here in the Pittsburgh PA market. You can plug your zip code into their channel listing website to see what is available in your area. If you don't find it, let me know and I'll forward it to you.

Works just fine wireless.

I'm not familiar with their music service. I use Sirius XM. Mainly because of sports but they do have a long list of music channels that also includes Pandora.

Locals on an antenna..... I'm only able to get CBS and NBC via my OTA setup. We live a great distance from the towers and we also reside in a valley. The signal isn't great here.
 
I got bored and pulled the LG TV's original remote control out of the junk drawer today. The co-op that provides Mom's cable is in the process of converting all customers to streaming with a proprietary app. I guarantee she's going to call me before them, so I thought I'd take a look at what I mayy be in for..

I got the set connected to the WiFi and managed to get Peacock added. I also got the remote configured for Spectrum's cable box, but I find the box's dedicated remote to be easier to use. I also don't like the way the cable guide is displayed or functions when I access it via the LG remote vs. the cable remote.

I found the WiFi and remote configs easier to set up than actually using the interface for the smart features. Too many menus and options I don't understand (yet?). It took me several minutes to figure out the Apps menu shows dozens of items that CAN be installed, not what is actually already installed. I also don't understand the 'Dashboard' feature, but I haven't Googled it yet.

LG has a feature (free app?) that provides some content. I Googled it but out of a list of over 150 channels, only Fox Sports looked even slightly interesting. I hope to try that and then switch to the cable box and see if it's the same content. I'd test the app that Mom will be using but I'm told it only works for their Internet customers.

So far, I see nothing that makes me want to spend more time in front of the set.

Oh, and this isn't happening. We're going to be moving this year so we'll stick it out with Spectrum for the duration.
 
The only thing we miss on YoutubeTV is AXS channel. But just found out I can add it to the Roku next to the NHRA channel.

Saved us ~$150 a month over AT&T U-Verse. Internet saved us another $75 or so.

This may be one potential pain point for me. How do y'all remember what content is on which app / service? Cheat sheets beside the remote?

Right now NHRA is the only thing we have on the Roku. I'lll add AXS. Otherwise youtube TV is the only thing we have.

Tried YouTube TV couple times. Found I don't need that many channels. When I think I need a cable news channel I use Sling Orange as It's only 40 bucks. My TV stays on OTA antenna channel 90% of the time. Have second Smart TV connected to mini-PC which is where most of my attention is pointed. Will find something want to watch on PC & cast it to big TV. Be a 20-30 minute video usually. Then back to OTA with it likely muted. More roaming internet and repeat. Once In a while watch some movies via Prime. Only "streaming" channels I pay for are YT Premium & Prime. Cancelled Sling for now until something newsworthy starts happening. Do have Flo but pay yearly. Finally figured out I'd rather pay one lump sum.

Yeah, I have to figure out how easy it's going to be for my technologically illiterate Darling Bride and my 88-year-old mother to switch between smart TV apps and antenna on one set, and a streaming device and antenna on another. At this time, I'm aiming only to bite off the transition from cable to YouTube via the TV's app.
 
TCL Brand TV, with Roku software, can set start "channel". My big TV when powered on goes to OTA last channel viewed. To move from there, press Home button which loads this screen. Use arrow buttons, which surround OK button, to go to "input"you want to view. I call an app and input. It's all on that home screen with Roku embedded in TV. Toggle right button once, then up or down to select what you want to view. The Roku operating system is VERY intuitive.

I bought an Android TV once but didn't like the interface at all. Returned it with couple days and bought a Roku version.
 
I have difficulty adding/editing pictures to a post from phone.

Going to add, if using Roku software, the voice remote might be desirable so don't have to punch so many buttons. While I DO have it it for big TV, I don't use the voice option. I find the 'Hey Roku" command pretty stupid. But it does work well for volume up/down/must. Haven't used it at all to select channels. I'll play around some today.

The remote is another reason the Apple TV platform is superior to the others, in my experience. Because of the touch/slide functions, it's quicker to scroll and push buttons. Apple also has the voice remote. Plus, logging in to most apps and purchasing movies are both much easier because I can just use my phone and "Face ID."

The voice functions on both Apple and Roku are great for searching.

I refuse to use anything Apple. They are like Snap-On. Really proud of their stuff. As in EXPENSIVE!

I do need to try using the voice dealio tho.

I got an Apple TV because neither my Roku Ultra nor my Fire Stick (which were both 4K/ATMOS compatible) work right with my TV and sound system. Both devices, along with the apps on the Samsung TV itself, caused an insufferable, perpetual hiss from my rear speakers. And the picture quality on the Fire Stick was dreadful.

The picture quality on my Apple TV is far superior, so good that 1080p HD looks better than 4K HDR did on the other devices, and HDR is so much more vibrant. The sound is way better too.

The other thing I've grown to like about Apple products, aside from the quality, consistency and ease of use, is how well their ecosystem works. Apple products work seamlessly together. Same with Microsoft Windows.
