College Football 2017

The only thing I'd change from the article is I'd let the best non-power 5 conference champion in regardless, the author suggested only allowing this if they're undefeated. That way you couldn't have more than 3 teams from one conference in the playoff. Or they could put a cap on it like back in the BCS days when they wouldn't let more than two teams from one conference into the BCS bowls.

But again, if the committee is going to throw out any guidelines they have in place to put Alabama in, what difference does any of this make?

Putting Alabama in was bad for College Football long term. I could see a lot more schools in power conferences scheduling games against unranked schools and schools like Mercer and Middle Tennessee or whatever since the record is the only thing that matters.

Virginia Tech is in the same boat as Alabama. They got a bowl game, which I know they're just participation trophies at this point, and are ranked 22nd because they beat East Carolina and Old Dominion. They played two ranked teams and lost big, and lost to an unranked team, yet they're ranked 22nd and get a bowl game because they beat a bunch of bad teams.

And honestly, this happens every year with Virginia Tech.

People can say what they want about Ohio State, but one thing they never do is put FCS schools on their schedule. It's a pretty common practice in the SEC. Just this year, Alabama played Mercer, Georgia played Samford, Auburn played Georgia Southern AND Mercer, and LSU played Chattanooga.

Should make it a requirement that you have to play for a conference title to go to the playoff. Bologna that Auburn gets knocked out after beating Alabama because they picked up an extra game

Crazy idea alert

What if at the beginning of the season we rank teams 1 to whatever. 1 plays worst 2nd plays 2nd worst and so on. Essentially you play the season as a single elimination tournament. This way the only undefeated team left is the champion. The losing teams round out their schedule by playing other eliminated teams. In theory this should get you the best teams left playing at the end. It will never happen but it be fun.

How would you pull that off logistically?

No idea, I also realized after doing the math after I posted that gives you at most a 7 week season with the 130 teams currently in FBS. Like I said it wouldnt really work it is just more fun to think about.

There you go again, Andy, talking through your tin foil hat again, making stuff up and posting it without any supporting facts. Virginia Tech, my alma mater just for the record, has a very long track record of scheduling non-conference games against major football powers, including this year. VT is ranked #22 because they are 9-3, with 2 of those losses coming versus top-10 ranked teams (#1 Clemson and #10 Miami). Who do you think deserves that #22 slot more than Virginia Tech?

Below is a list of nationally-prominent teams VT has played as non-conference games. I went back to 2004, the year VT joined the ACC...

2004: USC and West Virginia
2005: West Virginia
2007: LSU
2008: Nebraska
2009: Alabama and Nebraska
2010: Boise State (ranked #3)
2011: LSU
2013: Alabama
2014: Ohio State
2015: Ohio State
2016: Tennessee and Notre Dame
2017: West Virginia

Future scheduled games...
2018: Notre Dame
2019: Notre Dame
2020: Michigan and Penn State
2021: Michigan and Notre Dame and West Virginia
2022: West Virginia
2023: Wisconsin
2024: Wisconsin and Penn State

When is the last time Virginia Tech won a meaningful game?

So three years ago? They won a meaningful game three years ago?
I think they beat North Carolina when they were top 20 last year. Didn't they beat Notre Dame last year? I thought they beat Arkansas in the bowl last year. I'm not a VT expert, but I remember them almost beating Clemson too last year.

When is the last time Virginia Tech won a meaningful game?
Don't make me laugh. Certainly, all conference games are meaningful. Conference competition is the heart and soul of college football. Virginia Tech won five of them this year, and ranked 3rd in the ACC. Also won a close battle in a neutral site against West Virginia... two teams ranked 21 and 22 at the time with a giant Monday night audience. Won last year's bowl game against Arkansas from the big bad SEC.

Which team deserves that #22 ranking more than Virginia Tech? And are you going to respond to the facts I presented about VT's non-conference scheduling?

Didn't they just recently beat OSU when OSU won the natty?
Yep, and that game almost kept OSU out of the playoff in 2014. Had Ohio State not beaten Wisconsin 59-0 in the Big Ten Championship Game that year, Baylor or TCU likely would have gone in their place.

Kinda happy that Greg Schiano's defense shut down UT alum Tee Martin's offense tonight, considering how UT fans reacted to the Schiano hire. A little bit of karma there.

I hate to get ahead of myself but if Michigan and UCF hold on could Alabama over Ohio State possibly look any worse?

It's sticking in my throat something awful, but I'm actually rooting for Michigan today. It'd be great to see the Big Ten go undefeated in their bowls.

Can't believe the Gamecocks have a shot at winning the game.

I think it comes down to Alabama themselves.
If they beat Clemson most of the criticism will stop.
If they lose it will be an endless "but the Ohio State."

As long as whoever wins that is going against Georgia I'm happy! Cause I think my Bulldogs can surely win it all.

True. One of the reasons Ohio State got so much flak last year is because most people thought Penn State should have gone instead, then OSU proceeded to get curbstomped by Clemson while PSU had a hard fought loss to USC. Alabama will face the same criticism this year if Clemson beats them the same way they beat Ohio State last year.

I wonder when Harbaugh will get sick of this job. The three most important things at Michigan are beating Ohio State, beating Michigan State, and winning Bowl games. Harbaugh is now 2-7 as Michigan's head coach in those games. Wouldn't surprise me to see him coaching the Colts next year.

Epic fail of a season. Harbaugh is overrated. He ain't leaving though. I'm not sure if it's a good thing at this point..
