So if someone exploits a rule without actually breaking it, we should penalize them just because our feelings are hurt?

Not that I expect any different from today's NASCAR. Nothing surprises me after adding Jeff Gordon to the Chase field in 2013 as a 13th man because of hurt feelings.

Sports entertainment.
The circut layout is self evident and Chastain at least violated the spirit of the rules and deserves to be penalized.

This type of racing is why grandstands are shrinking.
Not really, but okay.

You may want folks not to attend, but it looks like there were a nice amount of people sitting off of oval turn 4. The grandstands under the overhang in front of the pagoda looked solid, but eh. Nothing special, but work has to be done to improve the quality of racing. That I will not deny.

Maybe so, but what was the other option? Drive into a pileup?

Terrible course, terrible rule, terrible everything. But at least it's entertaining and it's driving social media engagement.

Ok.
So why are they removing seats?

No real race fan wants a Cup race on this silly track.
IRP 1/2 mile or this garbage?
But we have to be entertained. I like watching cars pile up and then a random car merge into oncoming traffic and trying to steal a win.

To elaborate, if someone does something with the intention of circumventing a rule or exploiting a loophole but doesn't actually violate a rule, should they be penalized?

This type of stuff has always happened on road courses in NASCAR.

I also am of the theory, the Michigan Pre Race thread can’t get here soon enough.

Ok.
So why are they removing seats?
It's not the 90s or 00s anymore.

The bubble burst years ago and getting races with idk 50k people is about the average now in days. Not every seat is going to be filled anymore, that's just how it is at the moment in time.

I got time tonight, keep going.

You failed to answer the question.

It is not complicated you should not be able to advance your position with that type of stunt.

So my question is why are we still going back to Indy? To please Roger or something? I mean we can all agree this layout isn't any good and apparently no one has any faith in the oval. There's so many other options why do we keep submitting ourselves to this punishment?

No, I really didn't.

Stands are covered now in days with different sponsor banners, its not removing seats like we have seen with Dover or more recently Darlington. There was a time where we could easily see over 100k fans, but the average race has around 50k people.

From an optics stand point, its not good to see a ton of empty seats. So, remove them and right size themselves as stated before.

I agree but what rule was actually broken? Don't be mad that they followed the rules and figured out an advantage. To me punishing the #1 car was like a 3 year old throwing a fit

The series imo should be racing at Indianapolis. It’s the most historic Speedway in the United States, if you claim to be the premier auto racing series of anything especially in this country...you should be racing there. Preferably on the oval, but if further entertainment is needed then begrudgingly on the road course.

Covered seats are seats removed.
Nobody is sitting in them. No matter how you wanna spin it.

Maybe the question should be asked is how did it get to that point?
Thank you for asking the question.

The best way to answer it is which is valued more?

Entertainment vs. Defining "pure" racing.

I will say this, NASCAR is viewed as more entertainment type of series. Now all of these variables are baked in and this was due the massive ratings shift over the years.

Versus something like IndyCar, IMSA, or F1. Where they have gimmicks (Push 2 Pass for Indy, DRS in F1, and BOP (if you can say its a gimmick). They are more focused on the racing and just that. NASCAR is in an interesting spot, do I wish they would simplify some issues?

Absolutely, but that's not for me to decide. Like, I think something like SRX got it right on what to focus outside of the racing. Track history, history of the area, etc. However, entertainment is depending on the person.

So we should have one bad race a year just so we can say we're racing at INDY?
