The thing about Earnhardt is he was great because the dude was an absolute workaholic. He poured everything he had into racing, and it came out on the track. Every lap he did whatever it took to win no matter what. He's literally Michael Jordan/Tiger Woods level of all time great. But those people also have horrible personal lives because you expect everyone around you to take that course of action and it goes horribly. I don't think he's a bad guy, just unbalanced

I kind of thought this way too until Kerry said he hadnt seen or spoken to his dad for the first 10 years of his life. That really blew my mind and whats even more mind blowing to me was that "its just the way it was." I'm not willing to say Dale was a bad guy (well the part where Jr said his uncle told him Dale used to go to junkyards and then case em out so he could come back at night to steal more parts. Um yea.) but I would say the family might not have been his top priority, I dont think its controversial to say Dale was an all time great at his job, seemed like a decent enough guy but was severely lacking in the father department of his life.

This is news? It's interesting to hear Jr. being more open about it now but this was pretty well-established.

I get the "race to put food on the table" mentality, but what gets me is that Sr. was a well-established racing superstar by the late 80s, and probably one of the only drivers in that era who was set for life financially and still couldn't give any time to his kids.

I don't think he was a bad guy. But I don't think he really was a great guy. And certainly may not have been father of the year..

One of his employees (perhaps in the DJD) more or less talked about how Dale Banned basketball at work. So, one of them was playing basketball after work (his right) and tore up his knee. Apparently the next day, Dale kicked him in the knee and lectured him, ultimately about what his employee does on his own time.

The employee more or less thought Dale was a miserable human being.

And to be honest, that kind of behavior is dog****, imo. Kind of hard to respect someone who would kick someone with a knee injury BECAUSE of the injury. It shows a lack of respect, empathy, and selfishness. I don't really care how mythified he is in the NASCAR world. It doesn't make this kind of behavior (which seemed to be the norm) any less ******

Well it might be news to others I am not sure how to answer that. I followed Jr his whole career and sat through watching many interviews of him. Many of those interviews he'd drop crumbs of his upbringing. I feel like since he has become a successful podcaster, he has shown us fans even more behind the curtain and we are getting a crystal clear picture of his upbringing and relationship with this father. I do find it interesting how it seems with each podcast he's getting more and more open about it. His dad would have made a hell of a guest on the show

well I guess we can ask was Jimmie at his height ever popular as Dale? I dont know. I do know since 01 on Dale has been like a mystical legend and hes been put on a pedestal ever since. I admire the hell out of what he did on the track, probably my personal GOAT for NASCAR. Dale still moves the needle for some reason, hell I just spent $75 on two retro shirts I found on EBAY, I still dont know why.

JJ and Chad got booed a lot, but it was a different kind of booing than Earnhardt was getting.

No one ever as passionately liked Jimmie as much as Senior. Nor did people as passionately hate Jimmie as much as Senior.

Dale was the most polarizing figure of the sport. Jimmie was not. I think that's the key difference in their legacies (along with Knaus being their for all of Jimmie's dynasty).

I think Dale perfected the "common man" image pretty good, something Jimmie never did, cared to do or just didnt want to do. I dont know many common men that have their own airplanes, race teams, yachts and personal licensing agreements but I might not have the right friends.

"image" is a good word. Sr. has his massive ranch, big pickups, and huge sponsorship agreements with money pouring in. I'd argue that driver money for the top earners was better in the mid-90s than it is now, but of course I have nothing to back that up other than purse data on Racing-Reference.

But as you mention Jimmie was on another level of wealth. His career peaked when the money peaked.

I think you nailed it. Sr was a guy that the common man seemed to be able to relate to more than most drivers. I think that's Jr's appeal as well. I think smoke shared in some of that appeal as well. Larson seems to have it somewhat to a smaller level. Showing hey I fly around commercial and go race guys at local short tracks

Dale Earnhardt was one of the founders of Chase Authentics and was a massively influential part of every driver in NASCAR starting licensing agreements to maximize profiting off their personal image.

Those Chase Aunthentics pit hats were so bad ass, at least the first few years. Way more effort put into them than the New Era hats we get today.

The second half got better after the Kurt Busch story but man does he ramble.

But the whole lead for this podcast was Jr and Spencer talking through the 2001 Daytona comments and it never paid off. The subject jumped way off as soon as they touched on it lol.
 
My DVR was all set to record the Jimmy Spencer episode Sunday morning and then it didn't. Where you guys watching this?

I noticed that. I listened to episode 1 and Mike kept trying to lean into it, especially bringing up the long held rumor that NASCAR let him have his plate wins to keep McDonald's in the sport. Funny how Jimmy suddenly got evasive and borderline defensive at that. The story about Les Richter making sure he didn't win Daytona Busch race was interesting though.

You're onto something. Every level along the way, he had a story of "I was going to win this but they screwed me." The modified owner who gave the better parts to his someone else, Les Richter giving him the "BS" speeding penalty... I haven't made it to most of his Cup talk yet and I doubt that I will.

I spent a whole day around Jimmy Spencer in 2000, and I don't see much difference between what you heard on the podcast and back then. Good and bad, that's just who he is.
 
This is where we need @Spotter22 to chime in. Is Jimmy as full of it as he sounded on the episodes? Was NASCAR really out to get him?

A lot of what he's talking about was before my time with him but no, NASCAR wasnt "out to get him" as you heard he was pretty good friends with Bill Jr. Jimmy is confusing because when he tells a story he goes off subject and starts telling another story and totally loses track of what he was originally talking about. They should have done more to steer him back to the original question or else its a jumbled mess. Its weird because in the car he is 100% focused and clear as a bell on what he's saying and doing.

Dude didnt have anything taken away from him. He wasn’t in the lead when the caution came out. Spencer’s team started celebrating before NASCAR looked at the replay and Spencer parked his truck in victory lane. After the call was made. He had to take his truck out of victory lane and let Bobby Hamilton in. Jimmy prematurely celebrated and set himself up for disappointment.

You can see this play out at 34:15.
