DIY Projects

1st coat of poly on. Not sure the pic can do it justice. Probably doing three coats on this side of the door, two on the other. Sanding in between coats with fine steel wool. Should be able to get the 2nd and 3rd coats on tomorrow.

Still have to cut/sand/stain all the decorative type pieces for this door. I'll probably do that tomorrow.

That sounds like my household. :D
I just finished inspecting/repacking the wheel bearings and replacing the seals on the beast and Boat trailer. I also inspected and adjusted the electric brakes on the beast. The entire boat rig is only five years old but I'm taking it to a dealer Tuesday to get the entire steering system replaced. I don't have a hoist that can handle the weight of the motor. The steering on a boat here usually lasts about five or six years before it freezes up and I like to stay ahead on maintenance. Gotta get ready for summer.
 
Temperature and humidity working against me and my lastest door build. Taking a long time for the poly to dry. Tried bringing the door in the house to speed up the drying process but the fumes are kinda overwhelming.

Did take time today to go to Lowe's and Home Depot to purchase the cabinet's for our newly built laundry room. Plan on installing them this week. One pantry type cabinet, two base cabinets and two wall cabinets. Haven't purchased the counter top yet but they have a previously purchased granite top that is on sale at a huge discount because it's an odd size. About 3" less than what I need but I may just purchase it and make it work.
 
Got the 2nd coat of poly on the door yesterday. Now that it's dry, I think I'm going to stay with just two coats. It really came out nice. I can't take a pic that could do it justice. I have it standing up inside while I work on finishing off the rest of the wood for the finishing touches along with the door jam and trim. If all goes as of the updated plan, I should be able to put the door together tomorrow with the hardware and trim pieces. All this depends on drying time.

Moved to the laundry room today. Starting some work on installing cabinet's that I picked up at Home Depot and Lowe's. Starting with the largest, heaviest, one first off of the corner. This, two more base cabinets, two wall cabinets and a counter top to go.

Got a great buy this morning at Home Depot. A granite countertop. Overkill for my laundry area project but it was cheaper than a normal laminated top. Someone must have purchased too much for their kitchen so they had the piece at a reduced price. It had obviously already been installed and then brought back to the store. Because it was cut to a non standard size, they reduced the price. I was able to talk then down to another 50% discount over that price making it cheaper than what a normal top would cost. Size is 25" x 56 1/2". It's just shy of the length that I would have cut another top to but I can make it work. Worked on removing some of the glue that was still attached. I'll finish cleaning it up and wait for my son to help me lift it into place. It's very heavy.

Started working on the garage. It was beginning to look too cluttered, specifically the unfinished wall.

I wanted to make it look more finished, but didn't want to deal with the hassle of drywall or the cost of shiplap or pattern board or whatever. So I hung some OSB and disassembled some free pallets I picked up. Here's how it's looking now....

There's still a lot of things I want to change, but this is a big step in the right direction.

Nice setup. There is always something to change in a garage; a garage evolves as tools & toys are added. I used to have a dart board too. I couldn't help noticing the IH decal on the side of one picture (my dad sold Internationals).
 
Rejuvenating some of the rustic trim I worked on a while back. We decided way back when that we really didn't want any finish on the trim. We wanted it to be somewhat dull. That it was, and then some. Anyhow, I started by pulling off some of the baseboard and trim from the kitchen. Had to patch a few drywall holes from a former shelf so it was as good a time as any since I'm going to be repainting the kitchen. This finish will dry to a satin but man, it sure brings back some life into this wood.

It’s select pine that I beat up with various hand tools, nails and a wire wheel on my cordless drill. The wire wheel is what brings out the grain in the wood.

Put the last coat of poly on the kitchen trim this morning. Did some drywall repair. Gonna paint and then put the trim back up.

Been knocking off projects but neglecting to post. Here's one that I did yesterday..... A cradle for the hot tub cover. Had to replace the cover last year. The old lift system would not work with the new cover. The new cover is pretty light. I made this contraption to make it a one person job to get into the tub and push the cover out of the way. Two quick folds of the cover and it's stowed away until it's time to slide it right back on. Need to paint it yet. It's just in the testing phase.

Took about two hours total to cut and glue. About $60 in fittings/pipe/glue. Far cheaper than purchasing one.

Cleaned the mortar off of 180 bricks with a 4lb mallet and a chisel. I have a brick flowerbed around my patio and the top row of bricks sits perpendicular to the pervious row, which means only four inches of the brick is adhered to the row below. Many of the bricks are loose from stepping on them to get over and out of the patio. I removed the perpendicular row to reinstall them inline with the row below. My goal is to put a pressure treated lumber bench top on the brick flowerbed.

Short block arrived. I've never seen one of these things apart before.
Um...it's a flathead. I never even really thought about it.
The exhaust port is different than mine so I'll have to get a different muffler/exhaust. Or fabricate something :cool:...After I'm done with the brick flowerbed.

The reason that I like this mower is because of the cast aluminum deck, they never rust. Everything now has a steel deck. I'm going to sandblast and repaint the deck and engine sheet metal. The short block was less than $100.

Ours are mostly cast aluminum because of the rainfall we get.
 
I don't enjoy painting at all. Thank God it's done.....

It has come a long way in three years.....

Cornhole is like horse shoes with bean bags. I made a set 5 (?)+ years ago, PITA making the bags so I bought them on-line.

After BBQ and some adult beverages it's a fun game. Of course there's plenty of lewd and double entendre comments,,,mostly made by the wimminz!!!!

I got the bricks done in time for the mortar to cure before a bit of rain...so I had time to strip the black paint off the mower short block, repaint with VHT ceramic paint and install a new OEM 692038 low tone muffler. I'll have to use the deflector off of the old muffler after an acid soak to remove the surface rust. :D
