And whenever the course workers cover a wrecked racecar with a tarp, you already know the outcome.

I think that all of these 1.5 mile high-banked ovals should be removed from the schedule. Let them race at Phoenix (where drivers have to lift off the throttle) Michigan, Fontucky (even though Greg Moore was killed at California) and of course INDY.

Racing is a dangerous business. I think we all recognize that. But when you put drivers in positions like we saw at Vegas, where a punctured tire or a few drops of oil or a slight miscalculation by one driver, can bring about this type of carnage, it's time to re-think the process, IMO...
 
I'm just heart-broken. I don't know what else to say.

PS - Max Papis must have had someone from inside the meeting keeping him updated since he tweeted he would miss Dan every day of his life, quite a bit before anything was announced on TV. :(

I noticed that yesturday about 15 minutes before they even made the announcement he already was saying how he is gonna miss Wheldon

I hope they do decide to do that. It would be a really nice thing to do in his honor.

And that was in the days before the HANS device and SAFER barriers. Geoff was very fortunate - and from his hospital bed he told everyone to look at his race seat. I can't remember if it was a La Joie seat or what, but it was way ahead of it's time - and it saved Geoff's life. Plus, he had a roof over his head. That made a big difference as well.
 
Another example of an INDY racecar hitting the catch fence ****pit first can be seen in the footage of Jeff Krosnoff's fatal crach at the 1996 Molson GP in Toronto - which also took the life of a corner worker.

Wrecks like these are why Ashley Judd was so happy to see Mr. Judd in a stock car. Maybe he will give that another go...

Jimmies idea is interesting but I can't imagine the costs for something like that would be cheap nor do I know enough about it to know if it would actually work or not.
 
I didn't know until just now but for anyone who wants to see it the 2011 Indy 500 is on they showed the 2005 one before this but I missed it.

Actualy now that I think about it Papis was likely in attendance (Trucks ran at Vegas the day before) during the race and may have went to the hospital.

Yeah that be hard and expensive almost to the point you could make a tube of it over the track and ta-da we can race in the rain in clear plexi glss tunnels. But seriously it doesn't seem like a logical option, I have to wonder if they still raced with no catch fences how far outside the track would some of those cars landed.

I didn't catch the tire hitting him in the head until you posted that picture but in the replay I see the tire now. If it wasn't for the tire then maybe he would have been ok? I'm not sure.

You are all correct. Motorsports as a whole is a huge family. Fans included of course.

We never like to see any family member down, injured or anything and today we lost one of the greatest members of our family.

What people should know is the entire @indycar field is a big family. The team members, drivers, officials etc. It's one big family.

Just can't stop thinking about Susie and the kids. Life just isn't fair some times.

For those wondering I was not the @SC_Racing car in the crash. Don't know if there was some confusion or not.

I just visited the IZOD Series site to see how they handled point distribution from the Las Vegas race. I never heard a declaration of a Race Winner, although Dario was confirmed as Series Champion.

What I found was interesting. No race results, no points awarded. It's as if the race never happend. Oh, if that were only true...

Yeah I have the Speed app on my phone and when I go under results and click vegas it just comes up blank, which make sense it was abandoned, so I assume like a baseball game that since it wasn't official it never existed for statistical purposes. Real life purposes though it clearly did
 
They only made it to 12 laps anyway, far too little to really have any official race results from.
 
Did y'all see Wind Tunnel last Sunday? (I watched the Monday replay) Dave Despain had Mario Andretti and Robin Miller on together and they discussed the state of IndyCar Racing, ovals, danger, etc. It was really quite enlightening.

I really liked what Mario had to say. Basically, he said that his answer to the pack racing phenomenon would be to give the cars MORE power and in so doing, the drivers who had the better handling cars would separate themselves from the field and reduce the danger.

I was surprised to hear him say that he was OK with racing at tracks like Texas and Vegas, as long as the cars were not all running at the same speed and flat out for the whole race. Force them to lift off of the throttle entering the turns!

That could be applied to NASCAR and the Plate Racing debacle as well.

Gosh it is bad when a simple poster like me, isn't satisfied with Mario's reasoning.


But, from what I have seen there is drivers threshold that would disqualify Mario's solution. In 2001 the Cart drivers were passing out during the Texas pre race practice.
Sustained G Forces of 5G with averages at 230 plus had 21 of 25 drivers complaining of dizziness and disorientation.


They cancelled the race.



Maybe Mario has more in mind, I would think retarding the handling would have a counterbalancing component. Because except for the almost flat tracks like Indy they will push the constant Gs.

YEP! The Champ Car Guys were blacking out entering Turn One. But, Texas is unique in that there is a fairly steep incline transitioning from the frontstretch dogleg into Turn One. Vegas does not have the severe transition that Texas Motor Speedway has.

I still don't think that those cars can safely run on a high-banked 1.5 miler, no matter what Mario says.
 
I'm at the track right now and you can still see the carnage it did to the track and fence. But the Petty school is making laps. There are a lot of race haulers staying in here tonight because we can't park across the street at the dragstrip until 10:00 tomorrow morning. I think I will have a cold one in Dans honor. "May he rest in peace."

Another way to force them to lift in the corners is take away down force or narrow up the tires.
