Interest builds around possible changes to NASCAR schedule

Well that’s consistent with what they said in January when they committed to revitalizing it.
Exactly, using it for the Home Track Series and locals was the idea. Xfinity, Truck, and ARCA/East Series would drum up more than enough interest.

Be a cool idea for Cup to go there as an All-Star event, but a full on point race? Nah.

Considering the state of disrepair it’s been in it’s incredible they’re bringing it back at all. If they can have successful events with series like Truck and SRX it’ll be a good story.
 
I wish they’d bring back Chicagoland to replace a Kansas race, bring back a standalone IndyCar/Xfinity/Trucks weekend at Kentucky, standalone Xfinity/Trucks at North Wilkesboro, and then give the Nashville SS race & 1 Atlanta race to Nashville Fairgrounds so the Fairgrounds has 2 races.

As for what type of racing could be there, Smith was clear.

“I don’t see Cup racing happening in that market,” he said, “but I think if we have local, regional racing, if we have short track racers return to Wilkesboro, this will be hallowed ground for anybody who races short tracks in the entire country. That alone is a big deal.

“If, somehow, someway, we could have a larger national tour series, like you mentioned the Truck Series, it would be beyond the expectation, I think, of everybody involved.”

I don't get spending millions of dollars to go regional/local racing at a high maintenance cost facility. It would seem to me to be impossible for NW to ever be profitable and that locks in the imminent demise.
I supported the Rock by attending several races when Andy tried to bring it back. As much as I like NW, I don't think I am making that drive for a local/regional series. If I was in the area I would definitely go though.
These corporate guys are smarter than me, so maybe they can pull it off.

Like any successful track it is going to take good promotions, a no nonsense format with well run race management
 
What is the appeal of a street race in Chicago to a lot of people? I just don’t understand the logic in that race or a lot of street courses (Long Beach, Trois-Rivieres, Belle Isle, Montreal are cool for “street”) where you only get to see a couple turns versus going to Chicagoland and seeing damn near the whole track at minimum.

Publicity. Even non-NASCAR fans in Chicago and other big cities will know about that race. It will likely have much more general public appeal than the Daytona 500 and it is a fantastic way to broaden the fan base. Plus there is a chance the circuit could provide excellent racing too

The iRacing street course was pretty ehhh to me. Chicagoland had some of the greatest racing in 2018 and Kyle Busch said it best.

But hey if they like looking at buildings and watching a couple turns & staring at the video board, cool.

You are missing the point. Chicago isn't about putting on a good race but that would be a bonus. The sole goal is to get new people aware of NASCAR.

When do you see Daytona 500 coverage leading up to the race? If not during NFL games the general public likely won't hear about it and that is for the sport's biggest race. Now imagine racing in the literal streets of Chicago. Every news network will cover that story and just about everyone in the country will hear about it. THEN the goal will be to retain those fans and it may be by bringing back a former track or going somewhere new.

Now do you understand?

If the money was coming out of SMI's pockets, it wouldn't be happening. Taxpayers funded the COVID relief money, and the NC legislature determined where to spend it.

Same motivation as the LA Coliseum.

Insightful opinion piece folks, the fans and media seemed to absolutely love it. I'm not absolutely a restrictor plate fan, but with us adding road courses left and right, I'm okay with this. 6 needs to be the max though, it should never exceed the amount of short track races

I told the Save the Speedway group that any attempt to revive North Wilkesboro at the grass roots level should be done under the assumption that Cup isn't coming back

I believe the new car would put on a hell of a show at Chicagoland. At the very least, I hope IndyCar races there in the near future, I’ve been sad that they left.
 
Uh, it turned out to be an announcement that Hendrick would field a car at LeMans.

yeah, imagine how wild it would be if nascar really shook the 2023 schedule up and went over to run a points race along side the running of the LeMans

just a fantasy scenario… but would be crazy cool

The sound of race cars at the Chicagoland Speedway will, once again, be silent this season. But next season? It’s possible that professional motorsports returns to the oval. Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk joined the Afternoon Rush to speak of the future of Chicagoland.


Officials with the City of Joliet and NASCAR met a month and a half ago to discuss the future of the property. NASCAR is looking to lessen its footprint with several tracks, Chicagoland included, and presented several possibilities in order to do so. O’Dekirk said the only way the city would get serious is if there is commitment to racing at the facility on the city’s south side.


While the track remains dormant of any sports activity, there are still plenty of positions being filled to keep the track in shape, for when the sanctioning body decides to either return to the facility as is, or decide to redesign the 1.5 mile oval


This comes on the heels of NASCAR officials meeting with the City of Chicago to design a street course, currently used on popular racing simulator program iRacing, for possible use for a potential street race through Grant Park, utilizing DuSable Lake Shore Drive and Michigan Avenue. While the street course is still not off the table, it’s possible that NASCAR could decide to run the street course and still have a Cup Series date at Chicagoland.


In the meeting with NASCAR, officials said that the Joliet facility still is in the long term plans for racing. Currently, the facility is home for hundreds of vehicles waiting their semiconductor chips.



 
Bristol has been covered in dirt for a few weeks now. The series that ran events there the last 2 weeks has been teasing something taking place at Bristol on the 16th for some announcement called the revival of a racetrack or something like that. All kinds of speculation what that could be.

To the people asking for Greenville-Pickens Speedway needs too much work to even be able to host TRUCKS let alone Cup.

The track has awful roads, no chairback seats, no SAFER Barriers, no garages, no luxury boxes.

To bring the track up to Cup standards, it would require too much money and work for too little ROI
