I agree however I still think the season hinging on 1 race is totally wrong.
Maybe 10 cars race for 10 races and the top points earner wins it all.

Yeah see I liked the chase but I’ve always said they need to do a 35 race season to decide the Top 4. I have no problem with the winner of Miami taking the cake as anyone of them a good champion.

Matt Kenseth winning in 2001 was not a good champion, 36 races is too long and it rewarded incredible consistency/good luck more than top driving

That's simple and you would know the answer if you were a Kyle Busch fan.....He doesn't give a sh!t because it isn't him....Which is way some of us love the guy.

That’s essentially what we had from 2004-2013 (although it was 12 drivers starting in 2007). I’d be cool with going back to that.

You know, all the publicity the big 3 got for being the big 3 felt over dramatized. 20 out of 36 races they won, no title.

Big 3? 2008. Edwards wins 9. Busch wins 8 johnson wins 7. Thats 24/36 races, and a championship amongst the "big 3" only two other drivers won more than once that year. Was more of a big 3 than this year, and all we heard that year was how great Kyle Busch is, and how Johnson is going for history.

Brings up a good point. Due to the chaotic nature of racing, a driver can be 20 points ahead in the points and wreck on lap one and easily loose one or two places in the standings. Nascar tried to take some of that out with stage wins points to soften the blow, but added more back with win and your in, for the whole season and for the playoffs. It brought in fluke winners, gave long shots a spot. I guess all of this looked good on paper when they were all huddled around the table. IDK for me it is too confusing and I follow the sport pretty closely. Seems to me there are advantages for casual fans to wait for the highlights. It's an almost impossible points system to follow, like the 28 races before are mainly exhibition races or something.

LARRY Stages! Stages! We don't need no stinking stages!!

NASCAR has done it to themselves. It used to be a big deal who won the racs, like the southern 500 or world 600 or firecracker 400. Now it feels like those are only preliminary events for the homestead final.

Is it really that confusing? Sure there are a lot of factors to consider but it really does reward consistency throughout the session in its entirety. The four who can perform under these rules are put above the competition and go head to head. While the one off finale is somewhat intimidating it makes them have to step up when it counts and eliminates luck from the equation. I like it.. I'm much more a fan of the system since the introduction of playoff points because it makes the rest of the season count. Instead of winning Daytona and coasting through until the playoffs it gives the drivers an advantage to go after and has created some great racing along the way.

I don't think they had win and you are in with the last playoff system, but they had one playoff cutoff, and then the best record with either the ten or later the twelve over the remaining races won the title. As it is, the last race is more luck or random if ya want to call it that than any before, but I guess they thought it would be better TV. Fans were all up in arm..oh ya got to at least give a driver who does the best during the regular season something. Well they did, and does anybody care but a very small amount since they did that? I am not real sure they do.

Friday 5: What Joey Logano has in common with other champions
In the last 20 years, the champion has not had the most wins 65 percent of the time. That’s a stretch that includes when the championship was decided by season-long points total, when the Chase was created and when the elimination format debuted in 2014 that led to the one-race championship.

I was fine with the old format. I liked the top 12 drivers make the chase, and bonus points for each regular season win. Creates a seeding.

I would like a format like this:

Point reset for the top 12. Regular season champ gets 10 bonus points. And you get 2 points for a win.

Yeah I think that would work pretty well and much simpler. Changing the points for every time they move to a different level kinda messes it up everybody down the line. It wouldn't happen every year but keeping the points the same lower, a car could possibly win from down lower and move up in the points, or go on a good run and pass a few. As it is when they reset, they are stuck if they never made the cut off. There is a lot of hard racing going on back in the pack.

All comes down to the points scale you use. Devise one with more slope towards the pointy end of the finishing order and you'll be pretty well off. I have no idea why they went to flat one to begin with at the start of the decade and maintaining one today is even more incongruent with the whole idea of making drivers want to race harder than ever.

Ultimately you're still greatly devaluing the majority of the season, even with playoff points, and any marginal viewership gains earned during the postseason (there really don't appear to be any except at Homestead) are less than what you lose during the regular season because the playoffs are going to decline significantly due to football anyways.

I can’t help but think that the point format and the resulting “Champion” this year will add to further disinterest in the sport.

    Anybody can say anything.
I can say that under my rules whoever wins a race around my block in the ULTIMATE CHAMPION OF THE UNIVERSE...

but that doesn't mean that he really is.

It's what people think that really matters, the perception that your audience has.

And if people think that somebody who wins like that is NOT a legit champion there is nothing you can do about that, and no amount of yelling and screaming and writing that he actually is will change their perception

Alternatively.. no matter how much they yell and scream it won't change the outcome of the race or season. Joey is our champion. People don't have to like it but he earned it and that's not going to change no matter how many points Kyle Busch got all season.

I think the only WRONG Champion is Kyle Bush and only because that season was his alone. No other team could plan and execute that kind of season.

Listening to NASCAR Radio.....How the hell did this narrative about Logano not being a worthy champion ever get started? That is such bull****. I continue to be amazed by a sport whose fanbase does everything it can to destroy the sport they supposedly love. Stupid.

It got started by counting the points...

The sport has been destroyed not by the fans, but by the CEO/Top Managers/whoever has been in charge and made wrong decisions in the past 5/10 years

I agree 100%. I have to tell you, any reference to Joey not deserving the championship gets me really pissed off. Completely stupid. He freaking look the other three in the eye and beat them. Period. End of story. Done. This sport is eating itself with its own "loyal" fans. Damn it people....wake the hell up!

Fans that don't agree with the playoffs existing will never agree. It's a complaint at the structure, he looked the other 3 in the eye over a 4 race period and beat them straight up. Beyond that, he did not. That's where the complaints roll in. Some want a reflection over an entire body of work full season (equal race weight), and some are okay with a playoff structure high pressure Homestead finale. Of course Logano earned the championship under the current structured playoffs, undeniable.
