Kyle larson is robby gordon 2.0

Rick didn't want Kenseth or another veteran driver because they were asking for too much money. The young guys drive almost for free.

I'm not denying that money might have played a roll, but if you know Rick Hendrick, he tends to go with drivers that fit into the organization and that he thinks will be with the company long term. Other than the Mark Martin hire, which was a personal friendship thing, Rick has never gone the route that would put a Kenseth or a Kurt Busch on his team. Other than Mark, I can't remember him hiring ANYBODY that he didn't expect to be there at least 5-10 years.

Why didn’t you just fire him?

If he were working for me, I wouldn't have fired him, but we sure as hell would have had some "Come to Jesus" meetings about continually tearing up equipment and not getting results by insisting on running two inches off the wall. How many races did he EVER win using that strategy?

I don't know that there was that much "hype" about him. He was impressive enough in a fill in role to earn the job and he got it. Last year he was the second best car at HMS (I know that's not saying a whole lot, but he was). This year has been a little bit of a struggle, but the cars still haven't been all that great, and he's caught a few bad breaks. More than once, the crew has dug him a hole he couldn't climb out of.

Fair assessment. I was kind of thinking that the narrative that surrounds him is that he will surely be a Cup race winner, but I don't really feel that that is a given. I feel the same way about Byron. As Hendrick goes, so goes Chevy, but you have a couple of unproven guys in that debrief room, and I think that contributes to their struggles.

Honestly it's a combination of everything, Target leaving Ganassi, DC Solar money gone, "The Package" no longer being in his wheelhouse. You can just tell his confidence is shot today on camera, 1st in early practice and misses the final Q round. I think he's going to need a fresh start with a new team.

Yeah, probably his own team on the World of Outlaws tour. You can tell this isn't fun for him, or a priority at all. Oh well, I will continue to support Ganassi when he leaves. I like all their possible candidates for replacements. Chastain especially.

I’d kill to see him in a JGR Toyota, he’d be lethal. The Kyle vs Kyle teammate showdown, sign me up. My feelings on JGR aside, I hope he ends up at SHR with Tony, don’t know where you’d put him but he’d be an excellent fit there.

Kyle Larson is Kyle Larson's problem. It's driver error to do crappy in qualifying, and more so to take yourself out with another error in the race. And doesn't he have a sense of smell to not be able to smell the second tire rub after he just came in from one?

Can’t wait to start me a Erik Jones, Austin Dillon, Chase Elliot, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, Chris Buescher, Daniel Suarez, Ryan Blaney, Bubba Wallace, Ty Dillon bashing thread the fact that so many people are writing him off after 9 races into the season with a new package is laughable. Yeah he has made some mistakes but the team hasn’t been on it either. I am beyond frustrated but I am confident that brighter days are ahead for Kyle.

Can't believe the 42 only has 2 top 10's this year and is barely ahead of Ryan Newman in points.

I'm not worried about Larson, I just think the team needs to fix some things & they've had 2 bad weeks. Erik Jones's results are a bit more concerning.

Idk man maybe he recovers under certain team, maybe he doesn't. Even new team with package that doesn't suit him, may not work idk. I just don't see it happening unless he makes a move to rebuild confidence, it's pretty damn bad right now.

Erik Jones has 3 Top 10s this season?

He's way more laid back personality wise. I agree he's overly aggressive and hard on his equipment. He may be more talented than Robby, though. He just needs to be a little cooler on the track, like he is off it.

Down to 19th in the points. If you had told me two weeks ago that after Richmond, Paul Menard would be ahead of Kyle Larson in the points, I would have said lay off the pipe.

Kyle Larson took over for BK racing as the weekly caution, or so it seems. Somebody had to do it.

soooo, when was the last time a driver left chip's cars and run better? the drivers who were "thought" to be amazing and left chip for greener pastures pretty much lost their careers because of it. jmac got his career back only because he came back to chips car. please understand history.

Yeah, I never understood the "Ganassi cars are junk" BS. When Montoya sucked, everyone just assumed the cars were the problem. Total nonsense IMO.

Please understand Larson is more talented than every single NASCAR driver that ever left Ganassi. Combined. Understand what you’re watching. If you’re gonna come at me with snideness come at me with me something better than that. Amateur Hour.

They’re not junk but they’ve never really been at the top of the food chain so to speak. I dunno they’ve had their moments but have they consistently been a championship contender?

They were championship contenders right from the start with Sterling Marlin. Who else have they had? You won't win races with bums like David Stremme.

McMurray was better with Ganassi than Roush. Mears was better with Ganassi than Hendrick. The cars aren't the problem, and never were IMO. Now I'm not saying they are on the same level as Gibbs or Penske, but I think they are right behind.

They’ve had good years but I’m sorry I don’t consider their cars a championship ride. I’ll take a JGR, Penske, and a Hendrick ride historically if I wanted to win a Cup.

Ganassi has been on occasions the best team, but I'll be blunt. Chip has been on most drivers he's had over the years. Scott Dixon, Franchitti, Juan Pablo, Larson, McMurray, Vasser, Zanardi, to name a few.

He's got an eye for talent, but it just seems in NASCAR he just cannot put it all together. Everywhere else he has been successful.

Understandable, but I don't think the Ganassi cars are holding Larson back at the moment when you consider how the rest of the Chevrolets are performing. Also considering how well Kurt is running in the 1. He already has more top 5's than McMurray had all last season. Kurt is proving that the cars aren't the problem. Once the Chevy camp finally gets their stuff in order, both Ganassi teams will be strong.

Does anyone know when Larson's contract is up? I've been trying to find it and can not.

I agree with you there Chevy has been off going on two years now. I also think once Chevy (IF) they figure it out....Kyle and Kurt will do well. Kurt is showing just what an amazing talent he is in the meantime, enjoying the show. Also Larson’s luck has been all bad this year, that’s gotta turn around at some point

Him leaving Chip isn’t so much the performance of the car as much as it is the environment. Sometimes we just need a new place to work

The one year Larson was a serious Championship threat in 2017, he blew two engines in three races in the playoffs and the race in between them, he crashed I believe due to a blown right front. His pit crew has let him down several times, he has killed himself with speeding penalties and overdriving the car. I've never seen a contending team so allergic to success.

Why aren’t we asking what a really good proven driver like Kyle Busch or Harvick could do in chips cars? Instead of saying they suck. Name me one driver who has ran better after leaving. You can’t because they didn’t have a career anymore after leaving chip. Casey mears, reed Sorensen, Montoya, jmac. Leave chip and your career is done. Heck even sterling marlin looked like a stud driving chips cars

I could poke a hole through your entire argument. Ready?
Nears: Won the Coca Cola 600 in Hendrick’s 5 after going winless with Chip.
Sorenson: Rushed to Cup after not doing a whole lot in Busch. Backmarker
Montoya: Went to Indy Car with the Captain and won the Indy 500 as well as almost another Indy Car championship.
JMac: Brickyard 400 and Daytona 500 winner with Chip but I’ll ask you what year did he win the Cup again? How’s Kurt doing in the 1 this year.
So after all that...did any of those you mentioned have a winning history with Chip? Why would we care how Harvick or Busch would do in CGR cars? Why would they leave proven championship winning NASCAR organizations to go race for Chip who hasn’t even sniffed a Cup? How did Dario do in Cup? Sterling Marlin a 2 time Daytona 500 Champ was already a stud long before he drove for Chip. Understanding history maybe isn’t a strong suit.

Really thought he had a good shot to make it to Miami that year, it just fell apart in the last 10

I think Chip has mostly had top 10 equipment starting when Larson came in. He switched engines to Hendrick, made changes to some engineering and competition type positions and they have run well. I can't say DC solar helped cratering when they did. But Kurt Busch is running better in Chips equipment than he was in SHR for the most part, but I think Kurt likes to show up and do the savior role to a struggling team. Larson could be having a string of bad luck, he could be overwhelmed with the whole Kurt Busch thing, who knows. but he has been making a lot of mistakes this year along with bad luck whatever the case.

I can't believe the thread isn't "Kyle Larson is Kasey Kahne 2.0":

- Multiple 2nd place finishes and top 5's in their rookie seasons with 0 victories to show for it
- Sophomore seasons that resulted in relatively disappointing results compared to year 1
- Dominant 3rd/4th seasons only to not be in contention to win the title at the end of it
- Serious regression (ala Kahne 2007) after impressive seasons

I think the chemistry at Ganassi is influenced by the IRL thinking and they will not be the best they can be until that is separated. The same thing was going on at Penske until Brad showed them different.

Still would bet that after the luck turns to the good and Ganassi or Chevy figure out this package, Larson wins 2-3 races and maybe makes some noise in the playoffs. Dude is too talented to be this bad for this long. Kurt will show CGR the way....BTW shout out to Kurt who was ready to be retired by many on this board and in the media for being an absolute beast in the 1 car thus far this year. I hope he goes 3-5 more years, it’s a highlight of every race weekend seeing him work that talent.

yeah, after all is said pro or con all he or any of them for that matter only have to win a regular season race and the play off system ogre raises it's ugly head

yeah thats why I cant count him out, the playoff system is a beacon of hope for everyone running not so well right now. All you need to do is win... then hit on something for 9 weeks get to Miami and all hell can break loose. Easier said than done I know but if this were a full season championship, Larson would already be cooked.
