Las Vegas Grand Prix (2023)

Earlier we were talking about the TV camera angles. This is more like what I was expecting from Vegas:

There was more discussion of this Saturday morning. The stewards apparently thought the matter was unfair to Ferrari as well. Apparently there was one other way they could have waived the grid penalty and that was if each team signed off on a waiver document. There was one team what was going to object to the waiver and wanted the grid penalty on Sainz to remain in effect however. David Croft refused to name the team but because of that objection, no further action was taken to remove the penalty.

Zak Brown also agreed in an interview that the situation was very unfair to Ferrari and was a time where all of the other F1 teams should have been good sports and waived the penalty. He said he definitely would have voted to waive it. He guessed that the team that objected was one of the teams competing the hardest with Ferrari.

I would love to know which team it was but if I had to guess, I would guess Mercedes.

That tweet was taken out of context to the extreme. Crofty mentions IF such and such (referring to Mercedes being in a fight for second place) happened Mercedes would object. That was him talking his usual nonsense.

In reality no such waiver or otherwise vote exist from teams when it comes to who gets and who doesn’t get a penalty. The rules themselves stipulates that changes after parc ferme always results in some kind of penalty.

The document in which the penalty was announced said as much. It doesn’t mention that x team denied a waiver. It just said it couldn’t accommodate such changes freely because the regulations do not permit it.

Them's the rules. I don't like it, but I like it better than not following the rules. Gotta go with the steward this time, but they need to fix this rule for next year.

That, and it would be great fun if Carlos won the race and made all of this moot.

What's not going to be moot is how they have treated the fans. I've seen at least one video of security being hostile and overbearing. They made the fans wait in the cold night for P2, and then threw them out and ran P2 anyway. I can see getting pissed off about that. The other side is the organizers had their hands tied. It was a freak thing that bit them in the ass, and we're not done yet. I reread the link on the lawsuit, and it's filed on behalf of 35,000 people! The next day and they already have 35,000 people signed up? Oh, this is gonna hurt.

I think if we can have a decent race the event will be ok. They will take a beating paying off the lawsuit, but then they have a full year to iron all the stuff out and present a better event next year.

This race is getting a lot of gleeful hatred, which I can't understand. I don't like to see any racing fail.

I think the cheering of its failure is because of the ridiculousness of the event & the treatment of the locals during the preparation for this. Just make LVMS an F1 roval and call it a day.

This is a joke of motorsports

No. To a European formula racing audience, this would be akin to observing that Tom Brady has never won an arena football game. I don't share that opinion of oval racing in the slightest, but it's a silly observation to make in the context Lewis Hamilton developed in.
Once again I was making a joke not being serious...

Road courses/street circuits are more technical and demand more skills and discipline from the driver than simply turning “left.”

I remember when I was an F1 hater and defended NASCAR like my life depended on it. Then I expanded my horizon and started watching F1, IMSA, Supercars, Rally, etc.

Suffice it to say, I was overwhelmed and way more appreciative of what I was witnessing.
I grew up much the same way, NASCAR or bust. Never really considered anything else until I was in college and got to go to some other events. High-level oval racing and road racing both require unique skill sets in their own right and I don’t think anyone at the top level of either could switch disciplines and comfortably make the transition without major growing pains. There are as many good drivers as ever and they start to specialize so young there’s always gonna be a lot of catching up to do. Part of why you don’t see so much cross-pollination as you did maybe forty or fifty years ago.

I grew up watching all kinds of racing. Would get up and turn ESPN on and F1 was on.

F1 has excited me at times. Lately, it’s boring.

Boy that Shaq guy sure seems like a nice fella.

For someone that now does television for a living that was pretty lousy.

Being in Utah I drive in and it is bizarre. You're literally on an interstate in nowhere cresting over this desert hill and you start seeing the the tops of the casinos.
We’ve made a city in the middle of the desert the sports and entertainment capital of the world.

I wonder how many hundreds of billions taxpayers will have to invest in the decades ahead to sustain this.

I still say Nashville should be the city we build up. 🤷🏻‍♂️
