MLB 2014

The Indians are trying to hurt me again. While I like a great comeback win as much as the next guy, it is much more enjoyable to watch a game when your team is actually scoring and maybe even leading before the ninth inning. They can't count on the A's alleged closer to bail them out every night either. He's done so in both of their wins so far, but they won't see him again for months.

CLEVELAND -- The Indians signed All-Star second baseman Jason Kipnis to a six-year, $52.5 million contract extension hours before playing their home opener against Minnesota.

Kipnis is the latest core player to be locked up by the Indians, who reached deals with outfielder
Michael Brantley and catcher Yan Gomes during spring training.

The sides had been negotiating for months. The contract runs through the 2019 season and has a club option for 2020. The 27-year-old Kipnis developed into one of the American League's rising stars last season, batting .284 with 17 homers and 84 RBIs in 149 games. He also stole 30 bases and scored 86 runs. He led the Indians in runs, hits, RBIs and steals. The Indians drafted Kipnis in the second round in 2009.

I like the idea of signing these guys to long term deals before they are eligible to cost them big money or leave for free agency and the Indians get nothing in return. It's pretty much what they did back in their glory days when locked guys like Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Kenny Lofton, and Carlos Baerga for several years. Unfortunately, the biggest thing they need is quality starting pitching. Justin Masterson is in the final year of his contract. He was reportedly seeking a deal for around $17 million a year for 2-5 years. That's not bad at all for what he would likely get on the open market. But, the Indians reportedly refuse to go over $14 million a year. So, in essence, the guys who paid Grady Sizemore $5 million for absolutely no reason a year or two ago are going to let their best pitcher go over what could amount to about $6 million over 2 years? And they wonder why the fans are not flocking in droves to buy tickets to see a budget product on the field? Makes sense to me.

Phillies should be 5-0 so far but bad bullpen decisions in one game and Mr. I'm the highest paid closer in the game and I can't do my job right Johnathon Papelblown, I'm sorry Papelbon cost us another.

The Indians starting pitching is starting out worse than last year. It's hard to believe that that would happen when they decided to let two of their better starters from last year go and try to replace them with cheaper options.

I wonder if anyone played the Gary Thorne Drinking Game today. If they did, they're probably blackout drunk from all the times he said "Goodbye, Home Run!"

LOL Awesome.

"I let them know how I felt, obviously a lot of choice words because I think it's idiotic for people to run on the field and I think the punishment needs to be a lot harsher," Jones said. "And they should let us have a shot to kick them with our metal spikes on because it's stupid.

"You look like a [idiot] when you run on the field. We don't go to any other events. We don't go to other sporting events and do that to their jobs, but they come to ours and do that. I get it, you're drunk and you want to be on SportsCenter. Your [butt] is going to jail with a fine, and you might not be allowed to come back to the ballpark."

The two fans entered the field in the bottom of the eighth inning from stands on the third-base line and ran into the outfield before being tackled by security. One of the fans even tried hiding behind Orioles shortstop Ryan Flaherty.

Jones didn't find any of the shenanigans funny.

"I remember a couple of years ago, one dude broke his ankle in Baltimore," Jones said. "I was laughing at him. I wish he shattered his femur because it's stupid. It's just plain old stupid. Anybody who does it, I wish the cops tase the living [crap] out of them. I wish that."

I remember when a moron ran onto the field in a Browns-Steelers game in Cleveland a few years ago and James Harrison hit the guy so hard I thought he might have actually killed him. That was the biggest ovation a Steeler ever got in Cleveland and maybe ever will.

I'm sure some people will say Adam Jones needs to shut up and play ball, but I for one have enjoyed his "analysis" this week.

Why don’t you ask Tanaka about me? I’m the one who’s been over here in the major leagues for a while. Congratulations, he did it over there. Don’t make it like he’s the dirtiest guy in the world. He was 24-0-in Japan… At the end of the day, we’ve got to judge it off major-league hitters, not the Japanese hitters. We’re a little bit better over here as hitter.

Am I [supposed] to go home and say I faced Tanaka tonight? Just go throw a party that I faced Tanaka? It’s another pitcher. Another pitcher in the rotation. Nothing special to me. It’s just another guy that we have to go through to get to where we want to be.

@reck

Feels good to see the Yanks win the first NY-BOS matchup of the year.

I knew you were gonna brag about that.

Boston getting out of the gates real poorly this year.

Thankfully the whole AL EAST is uttered garbage this year so far too.

Everyone is either below .500 or barely at .500 lolz

@FLRacingFan

Get back here. Under 500 for you.

I think a lot of that is due to everyone beating each other up. Everyone in the East has already played a divisional series. Althought the Yanks did lose a series to Houston and Boston lost a series to Milwaukee.

Glad he isn't playing for Boston any more ....you can have him.

I'd have to say that it is less likely that the Red Sox would have won the Series last year if he were still there. He was great for a few years there, but he just doesn't have it any more. Greatness as a closer can be a fleeting thing unless you are Mariano Rivera(one of the few modern day Yankees I can truly appreciate), Trevor Hoffman or one of those very few. Even when he was at the top of his game, Papelbon seemed like he was just wound up a little too tight and he might just explode at any moment.

The Orioles in last place. Yep, there's the Orioles that caused me misery and high blood pressure for so many years.......

My FOX sports west 'trial' ran out...

But the Angels are back .500 and the pitching has shown flashes of brilliance. Well be alright.

The Indians offense finally put it together for at least one game anyway. They beat the White Sox 12-6 yesterday. Justin Masterson had a pretty rough outing after the third baseman screwed up a easy double play ball in the first inning, but the offense made up for it for a change.

Angels hitting killed it today. I like it!

If it might be fair, just stay sitting. Seems easy enough..

Poor girl's probably going to be found dead in a couple days knowing Baltimore sports fans. If it was a Ravens game, her body would already be at the Medical Examiner's Office.

If its a Ravens game, Baltimore has bigger problems. Ravens play football, not baseball. :D

Them guys were crazy to go for Papelbon. Right at the end with Boston you could tell he was completely done.

Guy was terrible to watch near the end. Kind of like watching Proctor for the Yankees. Ain't that right @FLRacingFan? Haha
