NASCAR considering radical changes to playoff system

I agree.. I know its different than a stick n ball sport... but for people who aren't currently fans the appeal of the stick n ball type playoff system could get them into it. Even if they just watch a few of the chase races this year and see something they like... The first time I ever took the time to watch a full race I became a fan for life.. so imo that's what NASCAR needs to do.. get people that haven't before to watch a full race or two, then I would think they'll continue to watch. I said in an earlier post that when I first became a fan of NASCAR and found out about the chase I was excited because I've always been a hockey fan and that's what appealed to me. I'm sure if I had found out about the chase a couple years earlier I probably would have started watching earlier. I get that NASCAR should stick to appeasing the fans it has ..but if they want more and they want to take them from other sports... this is how.

The reason you started watching NASCAR is because of the chase? I have a very hard time believing that.

Come to think of it, I would not want any new fans to start watching because of the playoff gimmicks. The less people who support this crap, the better.

NOPE

If this disaster goes into effect, there would be great reason for drivers to boycott.
this isn't stick n ball with a players union, they tried that back in the day to organize a union, they boycotted a race and they were replaced. They, like us have to go along with the changes or not participate if they don't like it.

Not that it means much since teams obviously would have approached the season differently, but here are your "revised" Chase standings using the proposed format.

Interesting to see how, in 2008, Harvick could have performed well enough to make the "playoffs" and then stay alive throughout the elimination phase before going on to win the Cup . . . without winning a single race.

I can't see where the drivers would want to boycott anything. They'd all be running under the same rules and they'll still be running to finish the best they can.

I can see a reason why drivers would boycott: A points system that makes the championship a complete joke.

That was the 1969. This is 2014. I'm not proposing a union, I'm proposing drivers boycott and not race until NASCAR reverses their decision. I don't expect this to happen though, as sponsors (in addition to team owners so drivers aren't replaced) would have to be on board, and a majority of the drivers would have to participate.

So , under the new proposed format would Stewart have been able to come back to beat Edwards? Or would he have been eliminated?

What decision?:) oh, you mean unsubstantiated rumor. I would wait an see what the deal is before a drivers's revolt is called for. In the mean time gather up, all the rotten tomatoes to throw at the screen when Brian shows up...off wif his head har har.

They make their money regardless of the points system, so why would they care?

The 1969 boycott was due to tires and driver safety. No driver cares enough to boycott over the points system. They're probably happy to jump through Brian France's hoops and see whoever comes out as champion after 10 race.

because of the boycott, they had numerous cautions to check and change tires, and a speed limit until the last ten laps. Like you said, they will jump through Brian's hoops, deal with it just like the rest of us, or leave. Plenty of good racing out there, I hear they are starting a full scale electric car racing series, RC cars have been doing it for years on a small scale.

if lil Danni would drape herself over the hood in a bikini again, she would beat Jr. Jr would have to talk his latest squeeze into a bikini to win it back. Letz go racin boyz..and girls.

That's not what I said... I said that when I found out about the chase I was excited.

When I was first learning about NASCAR and found out there was playoffs I was excited. I've always been a hockey fan so.....I got excited at the idea of a playoffs system...
I've had suspicions about who Sliced could be, but the Tebow possibility never dawned on me until now.

Hopefully there are drivers who care about more than just money.

When was the last time a single car team won a championship? Could it be that the real problem isn't the chase, but how many teams an owner can have? More teams, more resources, more success. They might be looking at the "problem" from the wrong angle.

....and this makes me wonder why NASCAR continues to push the driver fandom instead of pushing the manufacturer passion identity. Gen 6 was supposed to take us back to that. NASCAR started a media push for the car, and then it faded. If we view this with a stick and ball lens, we are asking new fans to pick a driver as they might a team, and follow that driver to the end as they might a team. However, a team has a 50/50 chance on any given event date. A driver has a 1/43 chance. Destined for disappointment. Obviously, if we can get new fans to buy into a manufacturer and/or a race team, those chances improve and the perspective on the season changes. Honestly, we don't need to change the sport. We need to change the way people watch it.

How happy would the Ford fans be ?

I'm willing to give this a chance. Sadly, others aren't. NASCAR's never going to do away with the Chase and I've come to peace with that. 10 years after the fact.

So it's now just a crapshoot.
I found a few things particularly funny:

- Casey Mears makes multiple Chases, finishes as high as 6th
- David Ragan makes multiple Chases, finishes as high as 7th
- David Reutimann makes multiple Chases, finishes as high as 10th
- Regan Smith finishes 11th in 2011
- Jamie McMurray makes the Final Four once
- Brad Keselowski wins once at Talladega in 2009 and makes the Chase despite starting only 9 out of 26 regular season races
