NASCAR considering radical changes to playoff system

No mandatory jail time for first offense DUI in Florida. The thing is he admitted to also being under the influence of marijuana and prescription drugs, probably Promethazine w/Codeine cough syrup (supposedly that's what he likes.) It will be interesting to see what punishment he receives from the court.

My guess will be rehab

Something tells me he wouldn't do particularly well in prison...

He probably will not see jail time. Plus, if he did, he would never go to the same facility as you or I. He has the resources to pay to stay in a safe, secure cell far away from any real criminals.
TRL should be along soon to scold us all for getting off-topic :)

The ultimate cosmic joke: 3 of the 4 championship contenders at Homestead get taken out in a wreck on Lap 2, and the remaining driver goes on to dominate the race.

Brian would love that. Then he could brag about how competitive the series is that so many drivers were in competition to win the Cup.

Hypothetically speaking, if a different driver wins each week prior to the start of The Chase then how does the "Win a race and you're in The Chase" play out? :idunno:

My understanding of it is that, after 26 races, if more than 16 drivers have won a race, they'll use the points system as a tie-breaker to determine who's in the chase.

edit: Before going to the points system, they'll use the number of races won as a first tie-breaker. Meaning a guy with two wins would be ahead of a guy with one win, even if the guy with one win has more points.

I think . . .

LMAO, so backwards. Everytime I hear it in lamans terms it is just so dumb.

The chase should honestly be removed. It forces the driver to be consistent throughout the entire year.

So what's the point in having a point system?

Not much of one, other than breaking ties and determining wildcards. Getting to 16 winners by race 26 will be hard to do, so more than likely there will be 2 or 3 wildcards at least. However, if the likes of Johnson and Kenseth are in full R&D mode by April, it may open the door for some other drivers to win some races.

Carl Edwards says the old Chase format was just fine, cites 2011. But "If it's exciting and what people want, that's what we have to do."

Carl Edwards points out a driver could win 35 races, blow a tire in the final race...and lose the championship. Is that fair?

Edwards said his bigger concern would be if someone worthy got left out of the final, but could've come back and won title under old system.

He'd be a two-time champion right now if not for the Chase. I bet he does want to see it go away.
Statistically there's no way he should have lost 2008 and 2011. He pretty much dominated every meaningful statistic (Wins, Top 5s, Top 10s, average finish) both years except for wins in 2011.

He even won the magic oil cooler award in 2008. ;)

Carl's 2011 season was very similar to Matt Kenseth's 2003 season. They even won the same race (Las Vegas) as their only win. Unfortunately consistency doesn't mean anything anymore.

Carl Edwards says proposed NASCAR Chase changes could be harmful

CHARLOTTE – On the third day of NASCAR's annual media tour, Carl Edwards became the first driver to express serious reservations about the proposed playoff format expected to be made official Thursday.

Edwards, calling himself an "old-school" driver who would rather not see a Chase for the Sprint Cup at all, spent more than 15 minutes explaining why a potential one-race, winner-take-all format might not be the best way for NASCAR to determine its champion.

"You don't want someone to win 35 races, have a blown tire in one race and not be the champion," he said. "That would seem kind of odd, juxtaposed to how we've crowned a champion – not just in NASCAR, but auto racing."

I'm glad someone is speaking up on this. Kudos to you Carl. Glad you have the guts to voice your displeasure with this sham of a championship format.

Sure would be nice if more drivers spoke up against NASCAR. If everyone gets a penalty, no one will really be behind... though Kez and Hamlin would be ahead, as well as anyone else who keeps shut.

Thank you, Carl!
