NASCAR considering radical changes to playoff system

When it comes down to it, casual sports fans are still going to watch the NFL over NASCAR on fall Sundays. If they're able to maintain any significant gains with this format I'll be stunned. They'd be better off trying to focus on the cars and tracks rather than the championship in their never-ending quest to replicate the height of popularity from '05.

They don't think it be like it is, but it do.
I agree... the football fans will watch football... like I said I don't agree with the train of thought I believe is behind it.. try telling Brian that though.

Luckiest? You have to win to win.. drivers rarely luck into race wins. I get ur point.. but what is considered "the best over a season" is now changed.. lol it's the best at figuring out how to run this system that will take it... I highly doubt the champion will have less than 5 wins on the season with at least 2-3 in the chase.

Had this system been in place last year, Junior would've been the champion with ZERO wins.

Really? Because Im pretty sure if this system was in place every team would have run the races differently.. Jr. most likely would have not been happy with 5 second place finishes. You cant compare a season on the old points to this because its not this. Maybe he would have.. but I doubt it.

You think Junior was content with the five second place finishes he got?

Daytona and Talladega say hi...not to mention fuel mileage wins, people running out of fuel or having mechanical failures right at the end of a race, and instances like Kyle winning at California last year when your boy Joey and Denny got into it. These things happen.

Even when they don't and a driver/team is dominant for most of a race, they have to be lucky enough to avoid or recover from all of the myriad little things that can go wrong during a race if they're going to win. It takes a great deal of talent and a great team and resources just to have a shot to win in NASCAR (and especially in Cup), but it almost always takes some degree of luck or circumstances to actually seal the deal and win a race.

As for the last sentence of your post, we would have had winless champions in 2008 and 2013 under this new system, so there goes that theory right out the window.

Sounds like you don't understand the points system that's being proposed. This is going to be the most radical change ever. There are going to be multiple resets with this system, unlike one reset with the previous system and no resets before the chase. The champion will no longer be awarded to the best driver over a season (or the last 10 races), but will now be awarded to whoever is the luckiest driver through the last 10 races instead.

The points changes that Petty went through all had the same basic principle: The best driver over a season wins the championship. This format will be very far from that.

unlike many ......yeah....i read entire format....before comment.
only real change is final race---4 teams. ....since points eliminated guys thru chase in past.
wild card teams win super bowls.......same concept here.

Difference is this is about racecars not football. I do not wish to see wild card type BS in auto racing. I was fine with NASCAR before The Chase and before all of the BS changes. Apparently everyone was also. NASCAR ratings have declined since Brian started ****** everything up.

Why are you associating NASCAR with football? NASCAR is very different from stick-and-ball sports, so why does it need a-stick-and ball championship format? Here's a hint: It doesn't need a stick-and-ball format (and shouldn't have one). Auto racing is a unique sport.

The number of teams in the chase is not the biggest change with the new system... the point resets are. You seem to be ignoring the point resets completely.

chase teams were eliminated before.....remember "stick a fork in him " ?
just start w/ 16 now.....which brings 4 more team's fans into 1st 3 races.
same w/ next two 3 race elims.......mo fans !

i started when bobby allison raced short tracks.......so bug off on hx !

I swear, Brian France could say he likes kicking puppies and DW would say it's a great thing. His lips are firmly placed right on his behind.
DW simply knows from which bank his contract is connected. DW does what the network wants. The network provides what Brian France wants.

This is why I love Kyle Petty and Wally Dallenbach, Jr. They aren't afraid to tell NASCAR when they're ****** up.

That said, I haven't seen RaceHub (if KP is even still on that show post-FS1) so I don't know if Kyle Petty is defending these changes or what.

after big $$ new contract.......brian is prolly doin what fox/nbc wants ?

Maybe Brian should get off his powdered ass and go check out a local short track schedule and championship. Or how USAC or other organizations format their Championships. Brian seems to think NASCAR started this stock car thing.

You're confusing eliminations and resets. A reset is where all the drivers lose all points they have earned up until that point and start from scratch.

Example: The drivers who make it into the chase will have their points wiped clean and be given 2000 points. Then, the drivers who make it to the next segment will have their points wiped clean and be given 3000 points, etc. For the final race of the season, the remaining four drivers will start off with the same number of points.

That's why I'm disgusted with these changes.

open wheel hx may not be best example bobby ? champ...etc

I think it's Kenseth's fault. The first chase was brought about cause he was trying not to win, this change is because he was trying to win

i read tha format ! i understand it ! i like it.....you don't !
you can bitch.....now til homestead.....an it ain't gonna change !

better get w/ little jeffie......accept it ....an go on ...like he did on race hub tonite .

Jeff said he was looking forward to the exciteme
You have a link to what he said?

He was on Race Hub. It's a TV show so there is no link. He said he liked the changes and that it was going to generate a tremendous amount of excitement. He also said they should consider rotating the final race to other venues like Vegas. It was a really good interview.

Just because you don't like it, PAS, doesn't mean that the drivers don't like it. Obviously many of the fans are going to complain because that's what 90% of fans do 90% of the time. Either watch the Chase or don't but no amount of freaking out on this message board is going to change a thing.

jeffie also thinks they should move last race ta bristol ??? hhhmmm.........

one thing about the chase is there was really no time other than a couple that the chase changed the outcome of the champion if the old points system was used. so basically the outcomes been the same. this IMO throws a monkey wrench in the whole deal. the funny thing is jimmie johnson will still win it.
