NASCAR considers turning down the volume on its cars

The largest breaking of wind ever.

Cruise it by yourself. It really is a blast cruising in and interacting with other fans during your day or weekend. I know it's funny given this thread, but you won't have a problem socializing.

Just curious, what tracks have you been going to?

The noise is the music, maaaaaaaaan. It's not just about what you hear, it's about what you feel. I'd prefer we keep them bleachers shaking. Lol.

I can hear the difference in the pitches, but I don't prefer one over the others.

As long as I can tell the difference between accelerating, holding steady, and lifting, I'm happy. That matters most to me, because it tells me what the driver is doing. But I don't need a specific frequency range to tell that, only a minimum volume level. Even that's only useful on TV from in-car audio; at the track it's tough to listen to an individual car among a pack of them.

We are all in our late twenties, the problem two of the guys had was the lack of ability to discuss what was going on as they are casual fans at most. They had lots of questions about who's who and what's what that they couldn't get answered and it made it less enjoyable for them. We rented scanners and had the radio broadcast on, but that can make for more questions sometimes.

I to was expecting to be able to converse even if it required shouting somewhat, but was disappointed we weren't able to. Over all I really enjoyed going to the race and personally will go to more in the future. However, it would be more enjoyable for my personal experience if the cars where somewhat quieter.

We went to the Kansas spring race last year for whoever asked, that is the only live race of any type I've ever been too.

I don't really see the issue if you're sitting directly next to people. Yeah, it's loud so you're going to have to speak directly into people's ear. Just like going to a concert, or driving a high-powered car or boat, or attending an air show, etc.

The cars have to get ALOT quieter before that is any different.

This is one the dumbest f******* things NASCAR could do, and that's saying a lot.

You guys are great. Truly.

B!tch about low attendance but shame on anyone who didn't like exactly what was offered.
That's what this board does. If you don't agree 100% with the old guys "your* an idiot". I say muffle them to 95db. 40 cars @ 95db would be plenty loud enough.

The cars are so loud that it makes it really hard to enjoy the race with friends and family seated near you. Everyone has ear protecion. Also it's so damn hot that it would be nice for kids to be able to remove ear protection from time to time. Many of us use scanners but most do not. Take a look at the picture of the crowds during the races. Everyone just sits there stone faced. No engagement with others.

That being said, don't make the cars quiet. Just knock off a few decibles to where standard earplugs will be sufficient.
I mean this with every bit of respect due, this is your problem, not NASCAR's, now, if this was your first race, I will give you a bit, you dont truly understand just how loud the cars are till you are in person at the race, and they f**king loud. But that is what makes going to the races an experience, and it saddens me that all the f**king snowflakes have to ruin it for everyone else because they don't like something.

This is kinda where I'm at. If you don't like it, **** off and don't take your kids to races. The sport is better off without people demanding changes, complaining about races being too long and cars being too noisy. All the changes is what has gotten us here.

I've been to countless races at countless tracks. Some with mufflers, some without. Only one time have I noticed a pretty considerable difference. ONE car at ONE track was so loud, it caused my ear to ring for close to three years. That's not okay IMO.

I have no problem with turning down the noise level a little bit.

130db is stupid. My hearing loss is probably more to do with running a air hammer in the fender wells of Chevy trucks knocking out the camber adjustment stops. But loud motorcycles & go-karts surely didn't help. Some can't seem to grasp the data. If you are around a nearly constant 130db noise, any hearing protection you are wearing that allows you to communicate with others requires the sound to be turned waaaay up. Just like listening to loud music with ear buds. The fact that people WANT to have their hearing damaged is unbelievable...oh wait...it isn't.

I didn't ask for the changes. I'm in favor of them being quieted down somewhat though. Take your ear plugs out if they become to quiet for you. I'll be going to races again in the future and will be better prepared

I'm done with this topic, I've tried to keep my opinions civil. Being told too F off for that is a bit excessive.

I never told you to F off. Taking offense to a general statement is a bit excessive.

And a Merry Christmas to y'all, too.

Its a country song lol

TLDR, nascar is founded and has a niche fans of good ol boys that like things a certain way and everyone else can kick rocks.

The sport is constantly ****** with and if you disagree with all the bs changes, you're ostracized for it.

It's not about "liking things a certain way" it's about just not screwing with every possible thing involving racing.

Nascar can either lead, follow, or get out the way.

So far, nascar has done a terrible job at the first two.

Agreed. Some people are acting like NASCAR is talking about making the cars as quiet as an actual Fusion, SS, or Camry. The cars will still be very loud if any changes are made.

I went to Atlanta this past weekend. Saturday and Sunday. I drove 3 hours to get there, stayed in a hotel Saturday night and drove another 3 hours home. For me, the sound was at least half the reason I went to the trouble and expense to attend in person. TV can't come close to replicating the sound you get in person. Live is the only way to do it justice.

I did wear earplugs about 75% of the time cars were on track, but that was fine by me. I WANT to have to wear earplugs. I know that probably doesn't make a lot of sense, but that's how I prefer it.

The in-person experience is visceral. I find it beautiful, and awesome. If NASCAR were to tone the sound down, even by 10-20%, it would take much of that over-the-top character away. It it were changed, I would absolutely reconsider going out of my way and doing what I did in Atlanta. The sound really is that important to me.

My biggest issue with the volume level isn't the inability to converse with others. My biggest issue is the *permanent, *irreversible* hearing damage for people not wearing hearing protection for whatever reason.

I'm able to handle the volume level at live races because I wear ear plugs, but I saw a testing session at Charlotte once without ear plugs, and it was painfully loud. My dad pulled an ear plug out of my ear once during a race, and it was painfully loud.

Not necessarily. Parents sometimes bring their kids to tracks without hearing protection, and I'm sure there are many first timers who don't know better.

Some fans aren't happy unless they're unhappy about something. The cars not being as loud will have zero effect on racing. I dare was you wouldn't even notice it at all.

If they ran the exaust out the other side of the cars, that would drop the sound level for the people in the stands, and wouldn't change the sound, or performance of the cars.

Most short tracks have run mufflers for years and the racing is great. The cars are still plenty loud to the point where hearing protection is still a good idea.

I agree with you as regards children. Few things make me cringe more than toddlers trying to cover their ears while Mom and / or Dad ignore them. As to responsible parenting, odds are good this isn't the only way the kids are being neglected, or even the worst.

Otherwise, that's a choice grown adults must be left to make for themselves.

Jason Ratcliff was on the Late Shift last night with Gillie and Wallace and said he hopes NASCAR never goes in this direction, and doesn't understand why they would even do this. It was refreshing to finally hear someone take a stance that opposes the agenda of those show hosts.

Moody of course is all for it and calls you crazy if you aren't. When have we ever heard any of these guys complain about the sound of these cars? Now all of the sudden it's the best idea ever and NASCAR must do this or it's the end of the world? Good grief.

Will the fan experience be perceived as edgy if the cars are silenced?
