nascar ended up with a corrupt race

Is the 50 point penalty for Truex and Bowyer before or after the Chase modifier is applied? I assumed that Bowyer had 50 points removed from him after the Chase starts (which would rule him out for the championship) but I think this needs to be confirmed.

It's definitely complicated. Hopefully NASCAR breaks it all down for us during presser.

@JennaFryer
The reason Newman gets in is because after 50 point deduction for Truex, he fell below Newman's point total and Newman was higher for WC
That would mean these penalties are being applied "pre-Chase" so Bowyer would still be alive for the Championship.

I wonder how they go about doing this. It doesn't sound like they're retroactively freezing the field at the last completed lap before the spin, because Logano is still in.

I would assume he's starting the Chase with 1,950.

Don't know. I guess we'll all find out shortly. Make sure and stay tuned to all three threads on this subject. Excuse me a second so I can go post this there too. :D

That was my first assumption, but they're saying Newman is in the Chase because he now has more points than Truex with the 50 point penalty. That would mean, in my mind, these are being applied before the Chase reset, so Bowyer would be largely unaffected by the penalty.

Yeah, that means Bowyer starts with 2,000 either way. Even I think Bowyer's penalty should be post-chase.

I think nascar can do it both ways and confuse things even more.

I don't get the point of stripping Bowyer of points pre-Chase.

Did nascar confirm that HIS points are pre-chase? I have a feeling they overlooked something and will clarify it later. Then again, maybe Bowyer confessed and they let him off easy.

Vickers isn't eligible for points in Cup either. I'm assuming the sources meant the #55's owner points. We'll find out soon enough, I suppose.

Would it be fair if NASCAR penalized Truex "pre-Chase" (so Newman got in) and Bowyer "post-Chase" so he was effectively out of reach of the championship? I don't think it would be but this whole Bowyer scandal never bothered me from the beginning.

You have to keep it consistent, so both have to be pre or post chase. Pre chase gives them 12 competitors still versus 10 if they did it post chase.

And it sets a precedent so if Bowyer woulda been a little worse, he would have gotten eliminated as well.

The problem is he had done enough to get into the chase. Period.

He would be in if not for cheating.

Round and round we go.....

Reck can't even provide video to back up what he/she posted, and now you bring us back to the start of the discussion.

Here's another wrench in the works - what if MWR appeals the penalty to the independent national stock car board? Could they hold a hearing on the penalty before Chicago next week?

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 9, 2013) – NASCAR has issued penalties to Michael Waltrip Racing following the sanctioning body’s review of Saturday’s race at Richmond International Raceway.

MWR was found to have violated Section 12-4 (Actions detrimental to stock car racing). As a result, MWR’s three teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (No. 15, 55, 56) have been penalized with the loss of 50 championship driver and 50 championship owner points, respectively.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

These point penalties are assessed following the season’s 26th regular season race and not after the seeding for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Therefore, the point total for the No. 56 car driven by Martin Truex Jr. is reduced to 691, putting him in 17th position and eliminating him from the second Wild Card berth for the Chase field. Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 car, now moves up into the Chase as the second Wild Card participant.

NASCAR has also fined the MWR organization $300,000 and indefinitely suspended Ty Norris, MWR Executive Vice President/General Manager and spotter for the No. 55 car, for violating Section 12-4. The three crew chiefs – Brian Pattie (No. 15), Scott Miller (No. 55) and Chad Johnston (No. 56) – have all been placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.

“Based upon our review of Saturday night’s race at Richmond, it is our determination that the MWR organization attempted to manipulate the outcome of the race,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. “As the sport’s sanctioning body, it is our responsibility to ensure there is a fair and level playing field for all of our competitors and this action today reflects our commitment to that.”

Yea it's essentially a non-penalty for Bowyer in the points. The only effect on the points standings is that Newman is in and Truex is out.
Why would NASCAR strip Bowyer of 50 pre-Chase points if ultimately he still enters Chicago with 2,000?
