NASCAR killing the sport / NOT NASCAR

It's racing. Even for "die hard" fans, most are casual fans.

I worked with a guy grew up in the 80s who said Jimmie is good because he has Jeff's cars etc.

NASCAR isn't intricate entertainment, people like us, who dive into the insights and educate ourselves are more invested. But the typical die hard fan is pretty casual, imo.

I can agree with this.

This forum is self selecting. We all are presumably more interested in the sport than the average fan. Otherwise we wouldn't be here.

Baseball has fans that go to games to eat hotdogs and drink beer. Others go and score every at bat of the season.

There will always be varying levels of interests among fans. Doesn't mean that one fan is more (or less) important than any other.

My 2 year contract with DirecTV ended and my bill is now almost $100 per month. I have one of the lower tier packages and I don't even get any sports channels aside from ESPN. If I want a package with NBC Sports or Fox Sports my bill will be like $135 per month. I love DirecTV but I can't justify spending so much for it. I'm going to switch to Optimum soon though because they are offering a good deal. Will be half the price of DirecTV with internet included for 2 years.

Since the contract has expired, I would tell them you are cancelling service including going through with having them to send the return mailing materials . Monday morning after a race is probably best, and go cold turkey a few days.
Once they think you are a goner they will offer a sweeter worthwhile deal. I dont think they will offer much until then..
I got a good two year fixed price this time $60 per month for two years for a mid tier package that covers the racing channels. And I have flipped between Direct TV and Dish as well.
They are all about signing on new customers and cater to them first. There is very little leverage for current existing customers, at least, imo.
The same is true for Sirius too, imo.

They have a self-titled "loyalty department" which I was directed to. I pay $54/mo. for the second level package and HBO. Made this deal when renewing this past Spring.

To be really honest. I believe all of us on these racing forums are a very, very small percentage of what makes up NASCAR fans. I think it could be easy for anyone of us to forget that others who like NASCAR probably don't read through all the channels and websites about it that we all do... therefore they will just say whatever they feel and it's cool like that to them.

I don't know if I worded that right, but I come across it often but I try to just remind myself not everyone probably reads these things all week long or ever thinks of going to YouTube in free time to watch old races again. There are die hards like most of us and then there are many casuals...

But I think your missing the point just a lil.. its not about studying old races and read on the internet about the sport.. it's just knowing the sport period.. the stuff I hear people say that claim they been watching the sport all tgere life is just insane lol.. like thinking all crew chiefs from cup is the same chief for xfinity ... saying Dale jr is a test dummy .. saying Toyota engines built in moutains overseas the list goes on and on..

It takes all kinds to make up the fanbase of any sport. Why worry about how knowledgeable someone is about the sport they root for? What difference does it make?

See, I'm thinking the landscape is already changing so much that, when my contract is up, they'll lower prices even more. Or I'll go to DIRECTV Now.

Playstation Vue is a game changer. Everything's moving towards streaming media. This sucks if you live in Rural America, but it's what it is.
Thanks for mentioning Playstation, Andy. I'll look into it, as my contract ends in March and I am going to give Fios a vasectomy.

True. I think it comes down to the general public haha. That same line of thinking we all hear in our days when we're out I'd say

So who steps up to sponsor NASCAR in 2019 and will the contract be worth more or less than the current contract?

See i never said I was worried about who someone roots for nor did I ever say I was worried about someone knowledge for the sport.. I said NASCAR has there hands tied when fans that has no clue what's going on. Complaing about stupid stuff and wanting rules to change.. wanting ticket prices cheaper when they already dirt cheap.. can't watch races because they can't get a channel.. won't watch a race even if they have cable because of the start time.. won't watch it because Toyota are being built in mountains over seas.. or they won't the old season points back.. won't watch because Dale jr is a test dummy and using others equipment.. saying there done because Dale step Mom won't let his brotha use his own last name for his business, I mean the list goes on and on and on and that's what I'm trying to say.. it's not NASCAR messing the sport up it's the FANS.. I mean I never seen so many people complain so much in my life until I got into NASCAR .. now there calling in complaining about how NASCAR change the start /finish line in the middle of season but been complaining about the same thing all season lol.. it never ends with NASCAR fans..

You obviously misunderstood my post as I didn't say anything about who someone roots for. I quit reading after that as it seems to have been the same thing over and over again.

People/fans are entitled to their opinion regardless of whether or not it agrees with any of us. Judge them if you feel it's necessary. Too me, it seems to be a waste of time and is simply complaining about others that complain. The circle of life as a NASCAR fan.

Ok I see what you said you said the sport they root for I'm sorry.. all I'm saying the complaints is what hurting the sport

I can't even get cable out here. Satellite or nothing.
No Wi-Fi, either.

You need to move.

What I'm learning about NASCAR fans are that they really don't know as much about the sport as they think they do lol.. I have been to 7 races in the past year and some change and I have talked to a lot of fans at the tracks I been to.. i did this more when I first got into the sport to learn as much as possible and some more history of the sport.. I'm starting to learn the more I talk to people and the more and more I listen on the radio to the NASCAR channel that a lot of NASCAR fans don't have a clue what's going on and just say the crazies sh*t lol.. I stood in line at the track to buy me a shirt and had s guy tell me the reason Dale JR wasn't running good because he doesn't run his own equipment and that he tries out all the new equipment, like DALE JR is some type of test dummy lol.. people call the Sirius NASCAR channel everyday and say the craziest stuff about what they want in NASCAR and what would fix NASCAR, And this what they always start off with LONG TIME NASCAR FAN HERE!! lol then say some something so crazy like maybe they need to make martinsville dirt so all the cars be equal it's just crazy the things NASCAR fans say.. So is NASCAR more of a cool thing and to fit in or is it fans out there that really know what's going on ? The bottom line is and what I'm trying to say when you have fans that dont have a clue what's going on but complain and call in to NASCAR Sirius station.. it just causes problems for NASCAR trying to satisfy a customer that doesn't have a clue what's going on or complaining about ticket prices when ticket prices aren't even expensive lol..

Reminds you of all the stuff you hear fans spout about JGR sending over illegal parts to Barney's shop, doesn't it?

How true. Anybody going to Watkins Glenn this weekend thinking the place is going to be filled with die hard Nascar fans will be listening in the dark. I bet a whole bunch of first time fans will be there, some will be people there for just the "happening" in addition to the die hards. Your going to hear everything in a crowd.

Those were "special" matched set parts. You probably don't know many "Days of Thunder" lines. (inside joke)

Major changes in the NFL over the last 10 years include moving the extra point to the 15, moving the kickoff to the 35, and Ticky tack rules like helmet to the head.

Baseball added replay and a play in wild card game.

Nascar: add one gwc finish, changed to 3, changed to unlimited with an overtime line, eliminated the overtime line. Added a restart zone, added a commitment cone. Freeze the field when the caution flag waves. Added a lucky dog. Added a 10 race mini season for the championship. Added 2 extra drivers to the chase. Added 3 three race chase series and a championship race, which includes the winners from the season and limited to 16 teams. Divided every race into 3 segments. Added a 4th segment on the fly for a single race. Changed qualifying to group qualifying. Eliminated group qualifying at the restrictor plates. Changed the way pit road speed is measured. Added double file restarts. Tried later start times, went back to noon start times, then changed back to later start times.

Changed back to what worked about the GWC finish (after listening to the fans), solved most of the debris caution complaints and commercials killing the racing by having stages (after listening to the fans) Changed plate qualifying after a huge cluster wreck (listened to fans and drivers) Changed to group qualifying (for the fans that watch qualifying it was a hell of an improvement. Most who don't watch it's another reason to complain) some Easterners don't like the later start times, but it has been proven that the rest of the country and parts west including California is a large market also, so it's time to share some of the start times.

Gee, Tommy's movie on NASCAR. The one that was written with just about every NASCAR stereotypes within it? Like many, I was unfortunate to have seen it when it was released. Bad movie then and bad movie now. I hope we can trade lines out of other bad movies from that era in the future.

Yeah, I've seen. Ratings aren't everything. Ask fans of Supergirl who don't get The CW in HD or at all about how ratings dictate whether a show stays on television. Or, even better yet, ask fans of Firefly. Those people are still pissed at Fox.

Every sports has idiot fans. I listen to sports talk radio every day. And you should hear some of the dummies that talk about college football or the NFL. To say some dummies are the reason for NASCAR's problem is being short-sided.
But only the one side......

Nobody in the 90's stopped watching nascar because they wanted it to be like it was in the 70's or 80's. That is becuase nascar was still a good product in the 90's. It was not until nascar alienated their hardcore fans trying to appeal to a bigger base with all kinds of idiotic changes that people jumped off the ship. For me it feels like nascar is actually coming back a little bit but it is still very tough to watch anymore.

Why Is it tough to watch? And what made it so great then compared to today?

Other sports have conversations about money. They just do it in a different way. They chat about how much players make all the time. I've never understood why. Who cares if player x is making whatever dollar amount yearly and over the course of their contract? All that matters is that the owner and the employee came to a work agreement.
Salary caps, luxury taxes, etc.

I saw plenty of NFL fans flipping out over TV ratings until the election was over last year too.
