Nascar Trivia

You said to think completely out of the "box" and that the drag racing guess was close so I figured I throw that out there.

I'm thinking it was NASCAR sanctioned drag racing but that's about all I've got.

Close enough PJ. Speed Weeks was really Speed Weeks back then. Every day and night during the week prior to the Daytona 500 we went to the Nascar Drag Division races, It was the "Nascar Deland Winternationals" and they held the finals on Saturday night before the Daytona 500. The division lasted three years, 67- 68- 69. I have my ticket stubs and they may be the only ones left. There is little known about it because so few remember it. Here is a good link.

An easy one that should be answered well before the end of today's race.

Name the driver who, after winning the first Cup race of his career at Phoenix, proceeded to take the checkered flag in hand and do a "Polish Victory Lap".

Your go PJ.

The ticket for the finals, cost $3.

There was no child admission, this was the pit pass, cost $2

The infield ticket for the Daytona 500, a full car or truck load of people $4,

Alan Kulwiki

Alan Kulwicki is correct.

It was in 1988, 25 years ago this week, that Kulwicki won at Phoenix.

Damn, I'm getting old but, then again, not as old as a guy who still has a ticket stub from the 1967 Daytona 500. :D

Yep. :D

Another easy one...

1988, practice at Bristol. Rusty Wallace cuts a tire, loses control and his car flips several times coming to rest on the infield wall. When the first few people got the the car, the top of the car was crushed down and they couldn't get the window net down to get him out. One man noticed Rusty was unconscious and not breathing because of the way he was positioned in the car.

Who was the man that saved Rusty's life that day by reaching through the window and clearing his airway and holding it open until they could cut the roof off and get him out of the car?

Alright back in 89" Dale Sr didn't win a pole that season but his car did with a substitute driver. Name the race, driver, & reason why Dale Sr didn't qualify the car...

Martinsville

Jimmy Hensley

Can't remember why he didn't make qualifying. Flight was delayed?

I had to look it up because I didn't know the answer. But didn't he get the pole at North Wilkesboro in '89? I just recently saw the end of that race on youtube, where Dale and Rudd got sideways battling for the lead on the last lap, giving Bodine the win.

Gordonite, your right about driver & place. Dale & a few other drivers missed qualifying because of Hurricane Hugo. TooSweet, the 89 Holly Farms 400 qualifying was rained out so they lined up according to points. This was the race that pretty much cost Sr the 89 Winston Cup. He & Ricky Rudd were battling for the lead & on the final lap, Rudd made a last ditch effort for victory & ended up spinning Dale & himself out. Sr had dominated that race & had he finished 1st or 2nd, he'd have 8 titles. He ended up 10th & lost valuable points eventually losing the title to Rusty by just 12 points...

Ahh, makes sense.

Yeah, Dale should have won that race. He didn't give Rudd a whole lot of room, but it was pretty clear Rudd didn't stick on the bottom like he should have, and took both of them out.

95 Bristol night race.
A normally mild mannered driver was taken out in a typical Bristol incident leaving his car crumpled up against the outside wall. He was very pissed. When he got out of his car, he angrily kicked the side of his car breaking his big toe. He then limped (lol) down to the the apron where the ambulance was waiting for him.

Who was the car kicker that broke his big toe that night?

Did some research and it was actually the 96 Bristol night race. I thought for sure this would be answered right away.

I'll give it away for you but you have to pay for it by answering an additional question.... The car kicker had an older brother racing in the Cup series at the time who was also known as being very mild mannered. If fact, the car kicker's brother was so mild mannered, some people would say he was cold as ice.

Now tell me who the car kicker was and what his brother's nickname was please?

In what race did Dale Jr. replace Kyle Busch after Kyle left the track after an accident while his crew repaired the car?

Samsung 500 at Texas back in 2007, Jr hopped in Busch's car for the final few laps of the race.

Aiight easy one for reals: Before it became the official fuel of NASCAR, Sunoco was the primary sponsor of a former NASCAR Champion & a future Daytona 500 winner. Who were the drivers & what years did they run the Sunoco car?

Shot in the dark here..

Elliot Sadler and Matt Kenseth

The year I wouldn't know.

The only Sunoco sponsored car I can recall was Jeff Fuller's #47 BGN ride...

Wait!!! Billy Hagan's #94 Oldsmobile. Driven by Sterling Marlin followed by Terry Labonte. It was an Oldsmobile, but pretty sure they ran Thunderbirds one year.

The years I'm not sure. I want to say Marlin 90 and 91, Labonte 92 and 93?

Wait again...Labonte drove Hagan's #14 in 1993 with Kellogg's as the sponsor. Marlin was hired to drive the Piedmont #44 after Labonte left the team in 86? Which means Marlin drove the car until sometime in the 90s when Labonte came back. I don't know when Sunoco came on board and the team switched to 94, so just a shot in the dark...

Marlin 88-90, Labonte 91-92?

Man TooSweet it seems like you put a lot of thought into it. Well your pretty much right on. Hagan switched from the Piedmont to #94 Sunoco Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme in 89 with Marlin as driver for that year & in 1990. In 1991, Terry Labonte came back to drive the Sunoco car for that year & 1992 before they switched to the 14 Kelloggs car in 1993. The 1992 season was the one where the team was switching between makes, using their primary brand Oldsmobile at the season opener in Daytona, they figured the Ford was a sleeker plate car so they used the T-Bird at the remaining plate races. Late in the season with Oldsmobile's pending departure, they switched to Chevrolet's starting at Charlotte. They used the Olds for the final time at Phoenix that season. I actually liked the look of the Cutslass... So your up TooSweet

Entering the 1995 season, a winless single-car Cup team rolled into Daytona with a new driver and sponsor. The new driver wouldn't last long, being fired after only a handful of races. A second driver was hired, and then a third, before the team finally settled on a fourth driver who would finish out the year, winning a race along the way (in just his 7th start with the team).

Who was the team, and who was the driver who earned the first victory? Bonus points if you can name the other three drivers who drove the car that year.

Team was Bill Davis Racing, the driver they finally settled on & won with was Ward Burton who won at Rockingham late in the year. The team started the year off with Randy LaJoie, they were one of the teams penalized during speedweeks for having offending parts on the car. Davis also had Jimmy Hensley & Wally Dallenbach Jr in the car during the year as well.

The team instantly improved upon Ward's arrival, constantly running in the top 10. If I remember right, Burton was fired (or left?) the #31Hardees Chevy (can't remember the owner/team name) right after a top 10 finish. Does anyone remember why? I think that team ended up closing it's doors after the season.

Are we ready for a new question here TooSweet, or is your question still on the table?

Alright, anyone whose been watching NASCAR for 10 years or more knows that Mike Curb & Curb Records has been around for a long time. So when was the last time Mike Curb was the primary sponsor of a Winston Cup team that would go on to win the championship? Season, driver & car owner.

Been a fan for almost 30 years and have to admit I've never even heard of Mike Curb. lol

Anyone?
