Random NASCAR Stuff to talk about.....

On their own, yes. Instead they will simply raise my camping rates like they've done for the new fall configuration.

What will they do when you can't come because of high prices? ;).

These tards see people spending $1000 for a spot on the back stretch. They don't think of you as important.

Carl Edwards will make his 2012 debut in the booth with ESPN during Friday night's NASCAR Nationwide race at Darlington.

Edwards also will serve as an analyst for the June 29 NASCAR Nationwide race at Kentucky Speedway.

I bet Fender can hardly wait for that ;)

lol He's actually pretty good at it. I hope there is some lame assed retaliation he needs to comment on. It would give him yet another opportunity to back off his comment that "I'm 100% sure I did exactly the right thing" a week after Gateway.

Um. A Roush Fenway Racing press release says Matt Kenseth is getting a new number and sponsor on Monday. Not sure if they mean no more 17.

I can't believe that would be the case though.

What else could new number mean? Perhaps Jacks #6 will make a return to the track. That's where it all began for Roush. It's good news anyway it works out.

I can't see that happening either DP. Although, with the luck they've had finding sponsorship it wouldn't shock me if they got enough money to do it. Just has to be a lot of money! I can't see Matt giving up that number.

This is how press release is worded: "...an announcement regarding the new number on Matt Kenseth’s Sprint Cup Ford Fusion."

It's probably like Jimmie did with the 5 car last year at the All-Star race. Probably a non-story.

But this comes with a new sponsor, who may want a specific number on their car. It's always good to hear someone like Matt will get the support he deserves. I would imagine the new number would start next year, but Matt does have some empty dates this year.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Jack did a deal with Penske that brought him a sponsor and new # in exchange for agreeing to supply Penske with engines next year and betond? Penske attracts sponsors better than anyone in the business.

Just a crazy thought.

That it is a crazy thought.

Good luck with that. Hendrick couldn't get it, I doubt Roush will.

I wonder if the current owners of the #8 could be convinced to release the number with some sort of "compensation."

Not that I want him to have that number as it doesn't really matter to me.

I've never heard of the media making a mistake before....have you?

I really hope the 17 is'nt going away that number has alot of sentimental value for me even though it's been on a Dorf the past several years :(

I don't think anyone made a mistake. It was a press release from the Roush organization to the media. I do think a lot of assumptions are being made though. I'm still leaning to just the All-Star event as being what the switch is for.

I hear you on the sentimental value. There's also the monetary value. Think of the stuff you'd probably replace as a fan. For me it had the opposite effect when the 8 went to 88. It was a turnoff for me to buy any more NASCAR related merchandise. I'm not saying that I don't buy anything at all, its simply in a more limited fashion.

Wait...

I thought NASCAR "owned" the numbers.

Jr's 8 configuration was protected.

I think Nascar controls the numbers which drivers use but once an owner has a number it's his/hers for as long as the owner wants it.

RCR still has rights to #3.

I suspect the only time Nascar would take a number from an owner is if they wanted to retire it.

Nope, DEI owned the copyright for Jr's number 8. NASCAR has control over the numbers.

NASCAR typically doesn't get involved in deals arising when one team wants another number, but it does allow teams to have their numbers from the previous year. And on occasion, a team will request another team's number, and NASCAR will allow the teams to work it out.

But at the end of the day, NASCAR owns the team numbers.

Let's keep in mind that this is just a publicity stunt like Kurt's was last week. Much ado about nothing.

Heinz 57 is a good guess.
Maybe Dos Equis #XX
Morgana the Kissing Bandid has size 60 tatas and that number is available. She might be plotting a comeback!
Maybe Maxwell House or Stroh's Beer (do they still brew that stuff?) wants the 6 back.

Whatever. It worked! We are talking about Matt Kenseth for Dog's sake! lol

Colt 45 maybe....no ones running that number.....or Coke Zero.......another sponsor of Roush is Cargill and they sure have some money..or maybe Valvoline will come back with the 6

From Jayski...

  1. Who owns the NASCAR car numbers?

  2. NASCAR owns and assigns car numbers to an owner(s). NASCAR reserves the right to revoke or transfer car numbers to another owner/team at any time. Car numbers are non-assignable and non-transferable, except by NASCAR. NASCAR works with teams and sponsors when a specific number is requested. If duplication of numbers occur, which usually happens with the part-time teams, the fastest qualifier usually gets to use the number unless one team is considered full-time. In 2002, the #27 was used by Scott Wimmer for Bill Davis Racing and by Kirk Shelmerdine, both part time, however, Wimmer was listed in the #27 and Shelmerdine in the #`172 and when they attempted the same races, Wimmer got to use the #27 and Shelmerdine ran the #72, so NASCAR uses it's judgement in deciding who runs the number.(9-6-1999/9-17/2003)

AND NASCAR said it owns the numbers used in the Sprint Cup Series, not car owners. And since they own the numbers, they're not for sale. Car owners are allowed to lease each number for one year, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said. Teresa Earnhardt, who currently controls her stepson's #8, can renew that lease next year to keep him from using it.(6-26-2007)

AND 2: NASCAR owns and assigns car numbers and licenses them to teams on an annual basis. Teams do not own the numbers. Teams submit to NASCAR requests for a car number. Depending upon availability, that number is issued via an owner’s license, which is good for a year. However, one team may allow another team to use the number with NASCAR’s approval. For administrative purposes, the official car number may be a three-digit number, however on the car only two digits are displayed (a 100 and 200 would both display as 00). If there is a conflict at any given time, by general procedure, the team submitting an entry form last would have to pick an alternate display number. Generally, if a team has been using a number that number is re-issued to the same team. If a team relinquishes a number, it reverts back to NASCAR.(Pocono Record)(6-5-2009)

AND 3: How NASCAR allocates car numbers:
    • NASCAR owns and assigns the car numbers and licenses them to teams on an annual basis.
    • Teams submit to NASCAR requests for car numbers. Depending on availability, that number is issued via an owner's license, which is good for a year. However, one team can allow another team to use the number with NASCAR approval.
    • Generally, if a team has used a number, that number is re-issued to the same team. If a team relinquishes a number, it reverts back to NASCAR.
