Random NASCAR Stuff to talk about.....

I heard Matt Kenseth on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio's - Dialed In last night. He said that the new sponsor would be with him for the All-Star race but wouldn't reveal any info about the number. Roush seems to be using the Bruton Smith technique to promotion. The announcement about the announcement. I believe the official announcement to all of this stuff is to be held on Monday. They certainly have everyone talking. This sponsor is going to get their moneys worth.

Seen elsewhere.....

RFR decided to give Kenseth a new number after 40% of those asked said they'd like to see it changed.

From Jayski...

  1. Who owns the NASCAR car numbers?

  2. NASCAR owns and assigns car numbers to an owner(s). NASCAR reserves the right to revoke or transfer car numbers to another owner/team at any time. Car numbers are non-assignable and non-transferable, except by NASCAR. NASCAR works with teams and sponsors when a specific number is requested. If duplication of numbers occur, which usually happens with the part-time teams, the fastest qualifier usually gets to use the number unless one team is considered full-time. In 2002, the #27 was used by Scott Wimmer for Bill Davis Racing and by Kirk Shelmerdine, both part time, however, Wimmer was listed in the #27 and Shelmerdine in the #`172 and when they attempted the same races, Wimmer got to use the #27 and Shelmerdine ran the #72, so NASCAR uses it's judgement in deciding who runs the number.(9-6-1999/9-17/2003)

AND NASCAR said it owns the numbers used in the Sprint Cup Series, not car owners. And since they own the numbers, they're not for sale. Car owners are allowed to lease each number for one year, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said. Teresa Earnhardt, who currently controls her stepson's #8, can renew that lease next year to keep him from using it.(6-26-2007)

AND 2: NASCAR owns and assigns car numbers and licenses them to teams on an annual basis. Teams do not own the numbers. Teams submit to NASCAR requests for a car number. Depending upon availability, that number is issued via an owner’s license, which is good for a year. However, one team may allow another team to use the number with NASCAR’s approval. For administrative purposes, the official car number may be a three-digit number, however on the car only two digits are displayed (a 100 and 200 would both display as 00). If there is a conflict at any given time, by general procedure, the team submitting an entry form last would have to pick an alternate display number. Generally, if a team has been using a number that number is re-issued to the same team. If a team relinquishes a number, it reverts back to NASCAR.(Pocono Record)(6-5-2009)

AND 3: How NASCAR allocates car numbers:
    • NASCAR owns and assigns the car numbers and licenses them to teams on an annual basis.
    • Teams submit to NASCAR requests for car numbers. Depending on availability, that number is issued via an owner's license, which is good for a year. However, one team can allow another team to use the number with NASCAR approval.
    • Generally, if a team has used a number, that number is re-issued to the same team. If a team relinquishes a number, it reverts back to NASCAR.
  3. Unassigned Numbers for 2012
    00,01,02,03,04,05,06,07,08
    0,3,4,8,25,28,35,44,

    73,76,77,80,81,82,85,
    86,89,90,91,94,96
Numbers are owned and assigned by NASCAR, teams can request a number and hold the license

Apparently I was wrong about RCR having #3.

But if Nascar hasn't assigned it to anyone - including RCR - what's to stop someone else from using it? Other than Nascar, of course.

I remember reading the one time that Petty Enterprises was told to use the #43 after the King retired or they'd lose it. I don't know if that had any basis in fact or not.

I really don't think that it is a first come first serve type of thing. The #3 being assigned to RCR each year, if it is a year by year thing, is probably nothing more than a formality. Do you really believe for a second that RCR would leave that number go? Also, look at it from NASCAR's standpoint..... What kind of a PR move would that be for the sport if NASCAR said no to RCR and gave it to someone else? As along as RCR wants the number, they will have it. We'll probably all be watching Austin running that number soon enough under the RCR NASCAR banner.

I've never read the story behind that #43 incident. Post the link if you still have it.

Do you see what I'm trying to find out here..is the #3 assigned or not? The info above from Jayski says no.

The #43 story is something I read yeas ago and have no idea where, but I'll do some digging and see if there's any validity to it.

I think that there is little doubt as Bobby posted it and you even quoted it, it is unassigned.

I guess all I am saying is that there is no doubt in my mind that the number will go to and always remain with RCR. That's all I'm saying.

Fair enough. So it wasn't assigned to RCR this year. Case closed :)

I also found this nugget about the 00 when trying to find some info on the #43...

In 1966, Buddy Baker drove a No. 00 Dodge, sponsored by a politician named Hooker who was running for governor of Tennessee. The "00" was part of the name "Hooker" emblazoned down the side of the car.

00 was also the number forBuckshot Jones ,was it not? 00buckshot?

I imagine there's a "Gentlemans Agreement" on that one, if not it's been proven Pappa Childress is willing to remove his watch. You don't wannta get old farts fired up!

Regarding the "3" --- what owner or driver would even thing about using that number? Can you imagine the tumult if, say, Buckshot Jones decides he wants to run that number in Cup. ;)

Mayfield's back.....

Jeremy Mayfield ordered to pay $1 million for pit bull attack

NASCAR Jeremy Mayfield has been ordered to pay $1 million to a Catawba [NC] postal carrier attacked last year by Mayfield's five pit bulls.

This is the latest salvo against Mayfield, whose home was auctioned off for failing to pay about $3 million he owed on the property. He also faces drug-possession, larceny and stolen goods charges in three North Carolina counties and was suspended from NASCAR in 2009 for testing positive for methamphetamine.

According to the paper Judge William Z. Wood of Forsyth Superior Court awarded Mary E. Bolton $1 million. Bolton, who lives in Catawba County, filed a lawsuit against Mayfield and his wife, Shana Mayfield, in June in Forsyth Superior Court. The suit was filed in Forsyth because Bolton's attorney, Marc Madonia , is based in Winston-Salem, NC. Bolton alleged that the Mayfields were negligent in allowing the dogs, pit bull/Labrador mixes, to run loose on their property in Catawba County.

She was delivering mail the morning of April 21, 2011, and had a package too large for the mailbox outside the Mayfields' gate. She drove through the gate, past "No Trespassing" and "Beware of Dogs" signs, to deliver the package and encountered the dogs that attacked her. Mayfield heard the commotion, shouted at the dogs to scatter them and carried Bolton into the house.

He and his wife called 911, and Bolton was taken to Catawba Medical Center for treatment. Animal control confiscated the dogs from Mayfield, but no criminal charges were filed against him. The dogs were later euthanized. Bolton suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and has nerve damage.

From here.

OK, at some point people need to be responsable for their own actions. Ignoring those signs and then getting $1 million from some judge who thinks people shouldn't own dogs is insane. Pay her medical expenses and let her take what workmans comp awards.

Another rumor floating out there today that Kurt Busch is going to replace Jeff Burton in the #31.

How do these things get started?

Anyhow RCR has already released a quick tweet denying this information. Who knows?

I bet Kasey Kahne won't be buying the latest Time magazine. Check around and you will get the joke.

Let me guess... Supreme Court to weigh in on Breastfeeding in Public. The battle lines have been drawn...

Sweet. So, you own a helicopter? ;)
Hang glider. I hook a line up to the rear bumper of Kyle Busch's RV when he's on the way to the track. He likes to drive fast so I get some pretty good lift. I can get high enough above the track to give you this excellent view each week. Glad you like it. :)

Nice. I guess you cringe any time Kyle comes up on Hornadays RV.

Eric McClure says something good came out of this week: "I got to meet Jeff Gordon. I never got to do that."

I'm surprised he remembers. With a hit like that, he may have dreamed the whole meeting.

Nurse: "Why does that guy in room 3 keep calling me Big Daddy?"
