Second Las Vegas Cup race

I'd like to think the Atlanta market is too important to lose its race, but who knows. I grew up going to AMS, even at the peak of NASCAR's popularity there were a lot of empty seats.

A Las Vegas night season finale race would be pretty sweet. Not sure which track would lose their date though, doesn't look good for New Hampshire. I wouldn't be opposed for the fall Charlotte race swapped for Vegas.

If Las Vegas were to host the finale, I would be able to watch Homestead-Miami races on TV again... and perhaps attend a race there since my dad lives nearby.

Homestead is a much more unique and exciting track for the finale than Vegas would be.

Yeah, I think it was. In '04-'05 Fontana, Texas, and Phoenix all picked up second races, replacing one Darlington race and both Rockinghams.

12 years later, still makes no sense.

Unfortunately, it makes economic sense. Nobody was going to Rockingham. Starting around 2000, we watched the crowd get smaller every race, and speculated how long it would be before they closed it.
I still can't understand why the fans stopped going around 2000-02. Racing was great, cars/aero package were pretty good and it was pre Chase/playoffs.

People don't know what they got till its gone.

Rockingham as a town itself has gone downhill since the closing of the racetrack. I pass it nearly every day. Think of all the history that was made in those walls and now it's just a ghost town...

Well, as great as the track and racing were, there was absolutely nothing else in at least a 30-mile radius.

When I travel to a race, I like to be able to add on other attractions, and so do my family members who aren't into racing. I like to be able to try a good restaurant. I know plenty of other people who feel the same way, and some are on this forum. The Rock was a day trip for me, but there was nothing else for people who traveled.

I bet Rockingham back then had about as many fans in the stands as races like Pocono, Richmond and New Hampshire have today.

Majority opinion on this board regarding New Hampshire-

Until today- "KILL THIS TRACK!!!"

Today- "NOT LOUDON!!!! TAKE ME INSTEAD!!!"

I doubt it was a majority as many people have disliked Loudon for many years.

So how does Darlington, Martinsville, dega and Bristol survive and not the rock?

The best racing at Loudon is the modifieds and has been since day 1. The parking lot at Wal-Mart has more banking that's better suited for cup racing..

Among the three my preference in order be :

1. Keeping both Loudon dates,
2. Dropping one 1.5 mile race date, and replacing it with a second Darlington date, or a Short track or Road Course.
3. Running a race at a Wal Mart, or Big Lots Parking Lot, and removing one of the 1.5 mile race dates to create the opening.

Along with incarcerating Bruton Smith, and Lisa France Kennedy.

When I go to Darlington I stay in Myrtle Beach....area attractions are a major factor when I decide what track to go to
Lack of other amenities wasn't the only cause, just the first one that came to mind. Rockingham had three competing tracks / six races within a 2.5-hour radius. And the race dates (late Feb, early Nov.) usually meant lousy weather.

Darlington, Talladega, and Bristol have interstate access. Bristol and Talladega are unique experiences, although I think a large portion of the Talladega crowd is there for the party.

Nobody wants to see one of the only unique tracks on the circuit lose a date so another Brobdingnagian can get another date.

I always stayed in Cheraw SC when I went to Darlington and with friends or a motorhome when I went to Bristol. I have never had the pleasure of seeing an event at Martinsville and at this point I doubt I will but it is great to see from home.

I know some fans that stay in Myrtle Beach or Charlotte for Darlington and the Tri City area in TN has plenty of accommodations. As for Martinsville IDK.

I hotel in Greensboro for Martinsville.

I think weather did the Rock in more than anything else although I am not disputing the importance of other factors either. The Rock dates prevented a lot of people from camping due to the cold and people in the stands were not like us Yankees that go to football games when it is sub zero and love every minute of it.

In fairness they didn't have very good dates on the schedule. The weather can still be very cold in NC in late February and late Oct/early November.

I was wondering if anyone was going to mention Charlotte. Remember it was just a few years ago that Bruton floated the idea of Charlotte losing its fall race. Hopefully the teams would have enough influence to keep 2 races here. On a side note, they're taking more seats out at Charlotte in turn 4.

It will be charlotte. Too much pride in admitting that taking away the north wilksboro date for a second London date was a mistake.

Starting in 2018 by adding a second Las Vegas race there'll be 37 points paying races a year.

Wilks didn't have the Hotel and surrounding area to support the bigger crowds that Nascar wanted from what I read. They, Nascar, couldn't make enough money from it to justify keeping the date, so instead killed a great track!

Pocono runs a race in June and another in July. Michigan runs a race in June and another in August. Indy runs a race no one cares about...even the drivers are now saying so. I first say no to two races at LV, but if I must choose, I would choose drop Indy, then Michigan, then Pocono.. Another thought, since no one goes to the Fontana race, the could drop that one.

There's no way Michigan or Fontana would lose a race, as they are ISC tracks, and Las Vegas is an SMI track. Chances are, another SMI track would lose a date.

SMI tracks: Las Vegas (1), Kentucky (1), Atlanta (1), Charlotte (2), Texas (2), New Hampshire (2), Bristol (2), & Sonoma (1).

Indianapolis and Pocono are independent tracks, but I'd be surprised if they lost a date based on current race contracts.

Hopefully, the track that will lose a date is not Texas, Bristol, or Sonoma! To be honest, I don't think Las Vegas deserves a second date.
