Second Las Vegas Cup race

It certainly will not be a summer date the track gets...this is Las Vegas...it has the be Spring or Fall. Since Las Vegas has a spring date, the second race would have to be in the September-November range.

The ISC tracks would never trade dates with an SMI track, so that eliminates Darlington, Richmond, Chicago, Talladega, Kansas, Phoenix, and Homestead right off the bat.

We're down to-
New Hampshire
Dover
Charlotte
Martinsville
Texas

It will either be Dover or New Hampshire, here's why-
Charlotte- Money was INVESTED into the track- big TV screen, recent-ish repave
Martinsville- Money was INVESTED into the track- brand spank'n new lights
Texas- Money was INVESTED into the track- big TV screen and the new reconfig/repave
New Hampshire- Money was LOST...big time. Bruton bought the track in 2008 for $340mil. Up until then, the track had sold out every Cup race, and was "relatively" modern, being built in '89. Then things started crumbling. The track stopped selling out. Tickets that had sold for $110 when the track was purchased went down to costing $50 in just a few years. The town has refused pushes by Bruton to build a casino. Lights have been "oh just a few years away" for the past 10 years or so. The place might have the least amount of suites/skyboxes at any NASCAR track. The Indycar race was deemed a failure, and went to Pocono. The track needs money- it will have to be repaved soon. SAFER wall was finally added to the backstretch inside/outside walls but the frontstretch is still concrete inside/outside. Also, compared to Bruton's more southern properties- the track and its property is unusable December-April (I think they do holiday lights and maybe snowmobile races during the winter).

There is no other SMI track is less sustainable than NHMS. And none have seen such little investment.

Dover is struggling financially- I can see them selling a race to stay afloat. But Dover Motorsports ship has been sank since the Nashville "Super"speedway fiasco.

I like New Hampshire- I've been there a number of times. But I see it on the chopping block.

Pocono runs a race in June and another in July. Michigan runs a race in June and another in August. Indy runs a race no one cares about...even the drivers are now saying so. I first say no to two races at LV, but if I must choose, I would choose drop Indy, then Michigan, then Pocono.. Another thought, since no one goes to the Fontana race, the could drop that one.

We can always dream of the Brickyard going away and in my dream it would be replaced by a race at IRP. I would love to see both Pocono dates go away and 1 Michigan and have them replaced by 2 short tracks and one road course.

There's no way Michigan or Fontana would lose a race, as they are ISC tracks, and Las Vegas is an SMI track. Chances are, another SMI track would lose a date.

SMI tracks: Las Vegas (1), Kentucky (1), Atlanta (1), Charlotte (2), Texas (2), New Hampshire (2), Bristol (2), & Sonoma (1).

Indianapolis and Pocono are independent tracks, but I'd be surprised if they lost a date based on current race contracts.

Hopefully, the track that will lose a date is not Texas, Bristol, or Sonoma! To be honest, I don't think Las Vegas deserves a second date.
Vegas has deserved a second date since they made the track higher banked, the racing is decent there, but what it is really all about is the fan experience. I've been to Vegas 6 times, every time it was better as a fan, there is a lot to do, there is other racing going on too at the Bullring and the dirt track usually has the Woo. Giving Vegas the last race of the season makes all the sense in the world, has right from the point they started having the awards banquet there.

And none of those tracks are owned by SMI, the outfit that owns Vegas. None of them are going to give up a weekend to benefit another track. The only way Vegas will get another race is if SMI itself takes it away from one of its own tracks..

I think the last thing the Chase / playoffs needs is another 1.5-miler, but you present a good argument. I'd go along with you if I thought a second Vegas date was coming from Texas or Charlotte, but I don't see either of those happening.

I would think taking a race away from NH would be the first place they would start.

Vegas doesn't need a 2nd date any more than any other track does. It's not going to happen but I'd like to see more tracks on the schedule at the expense of every tracks 2nd date. Varaity is the direction this sport should be going. Not more of the same.

There is nothing unique about Vegas. They could be running at any old 1.5er and you couldn't tell the difference as a fan of the actual racing. I don't care that it's taking place minutes away from the Strip. It's the same ol, same ol to the masses taking in the race on a Sunday afternoon.

It might pull in some more residents, but I don't think it'll pull in many tourists. This may be anecdotal, but I've been to Vegas a couple of times and even though I'm a NASCAR fan, I wouldn't want to devote an entire day of my Vegas vacation to seeing a race. There's too much else to do there.

its been rumored for years now that NASCAR wants the finale at Vegas.

People actually show up to Vegas unlike other tracks.

The only real tracks that deserve 2nd dates are Bristol, Martinsville, Charlotte and Pocono. Daytona and Dega will never lose their second dates, but they should. Other than that, NASCAR should diversify the track schedule even though it will never happen.

So, Atlanta may not be repaved, yet?

Anyways, that throws a wrench into the theory of ATL keeping it's date. Maybe we just saw the last race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

They'll pave ... or pay their roadbuilding and paving contractors a large chunk of change.

I'll go with pave.

I mean we all know it's a question of when, not if. Ditto for Fontana. The good news is that at least SMI has shown willingness to spend money on things that will artificially age the track (see kentucky and soon to be texas), like lye treatment and tire dragging.

Fortunately the surface hasn't started to come apart under load.

That happens next.

Word is Loudon would be the one losing a date, not Atlanta. The crowds at NHMS have really dropped off in recent years (so has everyone else's), but the thought is that's a long haul for a Chase race. Team owners would like to see the longer dates grouped together to save on amount of travel.

I would like to see Vegas moved to the final race of the season with Phoenix the week before. It could be a second west coast swing. I would move Homestead to the second race, right after the Daytona 500. My first few races would be Daytona, Homestead, Vegas, Phoenix, California, Atlanta.

Say what you will, Homestead produces great racing. Las Vegas never has. Adding ANOTHER Kansas in the playoff, and making it the finale no less, would be a horrible move. Especially considering how late you'd have to start the race and virtually guarantee it be moved to cable.

Charlotte? That joint is snooze city.
Pocono? Lmao
