I sat in the Turn 4 Terrace at Charlotte in 2004 or 2005. Very back row, where it meets the open box seats. Joe Gibbs was up there with a PR person, shaking hands and taking pictures with a group of people. There was a guy and his kid a few seats down from me, both wearing Redskins hats and the father had a jersey on. He jumped out of his seat when Joe Gibbs walked up, excited that he's within 10 feet of a man he clearly idolizes. He patiently waited until they were done with the meet and greet, and held his son up to the railing. He says "Coach, will you sign my kids hat? We're huge fans!" Joe Gibbs turns and looks at them both, for long enough that it's clear that he heard the request and saw the Redskins apparel. Then he walks off. Doesn't say a word. Just walks off. No one tells him to go, no one is leading him out. He just leaves. I completely understand that he has zero obligation to sign anything or interact with any fans. Publicly it looks like Joe Gibbs bends over backwards for fans and is a really nice guy, but it didn't seem so that day. That moment will forever be burned into my mind, that what we see in public is likely not what happens in private at JGR.
