Silly Season 2020

I'd like to see Custer get farmed out to Roush/17 from SHR or whatever if Ricky continues to suck.
I’d replace Wrecky with Chris Buescher in the 17 right now. A team of Newman and Buescher is a pretty good start for RFR I’d say. In all seriousness it just isn’t working with Ricky and RFR, I think the dude could use a change. I wouldn’t laugh if SHR found a way to get Ricky into the 14, I’d be intrigued actually.

I think Stenhouse could do well in the 17 if he drove like Buescher, takes his time during the race to get his car right and moves ahead as it gets better.
Ricky tries to do to much for what the car is capable of. He could learn from Newman.

That’s why I’m saying, I’d be intrigued to see what Ricky could do in say the 14 or maybe even the 95, we never really have seen him in great equipment....or better yet with a team that improves his equipment as the race goes on with a weekly consistency. I don’t think Stenhouse is a lost cause but I think it’s a lost cause at RFR, especially since Newman has seemed to be outdriving him the last 8 weeks or so

Yup, and even if they did -- those same fans are not connected to the financial burden or much of anything else to run a race organization -- they're here for the party (race, entertainment, lifestyle, etc).
I agree, I watch racing because I enjoy it and don't have to deal with any headaches of running a race team. If the team wants to pay Casey $80 million to hit 50 home runs, I am good with that.
Burton made a good point about -- who is gonna replace the big money old owners?
Gibbs (4), Penske (3), Hendrick (4), Childress (2), Roush (2) or even young 60 somethings like Haas (4) and Chip (2)
A while back I read about the succession plans these teams have in place. They are smart business men and know what they are doing. As for Burton, maybe not so much.

Coach is trying to top a record for using the most words to say nothing at all. It doesn't seem that letting Jones twist in the wind is hurting his performance of late.

Every week he’s saying they are close...this sounds eerily similar to Suarez. I hope the kid isn’t in trouble, if so it’s Gibbs loss. I’m hoping though there’s a seat for him at a competitive team where he can become a champion like Logano did if Jones is indeed axed. If I had to wager though I’d be shocked if he isn’t in the 20 next year.

ol Preacher always has the We in there. And the sponsor B.S. Jones has been running with the same sponsors that Kenseth had for the most part the whole time he has been there. That's why I can't stomach the guy, I think he is a weasel. Grow a pair, try telling the truth.

It’ll be a bitch when he’s spewing all this sponsor jargon and “waiting on sponsors”...then Bell is given the 20 with the same sponsors Jones has. You’re completely right Preacher is a weasel...he’s always reeked of a Sunday Morning TV Evangelical Preacher to me.

It's completely unfair to Jones (and I've never really cared for him because I thought he had a KB attitude in Trucks) if he gets ousted for Bell. Both have had pretty similar Xfinity results with the exception of Jones not having the benefit of playoff points in 2016.

Jones is rather overdue for another victory.

I think the expectations of Jones was to high in the beginning. I think Jones would do well
in the 41 seat but not quite good enough to take Kurt's ride. He is a fast driver but only has the skills of a top 15 driver. I think he gets moved to the sub team where he started.

Bell has been in Xfinity one half season more than Jones but their numbers have been nearly identical in both trucks/Xfinity. The fact that Toyota pushed Matt freaking Kenseth out of a ride for Jones and are now willing to throw him to the wolves makes TRD/Gibbs look like the traveling clown show. Most of Jones Xfinity wins came against fields with Keselowski, Busch, Larson, etc. he needs to start winning more (like literally every young driver, I see a trend here) but he has the speed and has 3 straight top 5s.

All depends of the sponsors want to continue their relationship with Erik. Seems like coach wants to keep him, but that's my usual amateur analyzation skills.

Bob Leavine, more of an open book than most, states that a lot of the future of his team's driver situation is out of his hands. Obviously this is a reference to Toyota and JGR's influence over the situation.

Why not just start the 59 up on a one year deal like the 77 and evaluate Jones & Bell, and DiBenedetto from there?

Kroger will be back but “no comments on drivers yet” comeon Jack....bring Chris back to Roush and jettison Ricky for what could be greener pastures

They don't have to write a check, they could just drop 1 driver and go with the best 5.

I think that they are looking to expand the stable. It is clear that LFR will need some help with this....and I believe that they will get it in some capacity.

The question is how do figure out who drivers four and five are going to be if they are not on at least somewhat equal footing? It's hard to make a very good decision when you have one driver at JGR, one at LFR and one in the Xfinity Series.

I don't think they will have too. Jones stays in the 20, Bell to an "enhanced" 95, and waits for Denny's seat. IF Denny wins the Championship, that will change things IMO....His asking price will become more legit, but I still think that youth and a lower price for Bell will be the deal maker. Once Bell and Jones are in place, it will be interesting to see if the Toyota Driver Development Program slows down a bit.

I'll believe it when I see it. This year they have less cars/trucks and racing personnel than they had the year before in every series.

There is something to that, but if you could land a team that didn't need an alliance in Cup, you would have something IMO. Having said that--and to your point--I think that TRD is pleasantly surprised that they have won over half of the races, lead the Manufacturers Standings, won Daytona, and have three drivers in the top 5 in points with just five cars. In sincerity, this is a best case scenario year for TRD and Toyota right now.

yeah that 5th Yoder 95 in 24th place is a real screamer, They're all standing in line to get in that one. :p

Is the 95 not a car just shipped over from JGR? Does the 95 team have anything to do with the car?

Both Bob Leavine and Mike Wheeler said that they get the cars from JGR, engines from TRD, but nothing in the way of set up notes/data from JGR....which is both surprising and interesting. Additionally, LFR is not present at JGR Competition meeting as FRR was per Bob Leavine. My thinking is that if you put Bell in that car, things change quickly. Kind of feeling that FRR is the new MWR for the moment. I think that this alliance with LFR is an exercise in developing infrastructure for what will come later. Flame away.....I know it's coming....

No flaming to it, you said something similar was supposed to happen for this year and what really happened is less participation in every series. Simple facts not pie in the sky. It ain't flaming if it is the truth.

I just get the feeling that DiBenedetto is gonna get shafted myself. I keep hoping for a 2nd LFR car (even for a year or two like the 77) but Bob insists that is unlikely.

Never say never. They just make a deal that Bell goes into a JGR car and it gets run under LFR
just for the sake of keeping their line up until Hamlin pulls the plug.

Not sure what you are referring to, but I do believe that Toyota wants to expand in Cup, and I think that David Wilson has said as much. Having said that, TRD isn't going to take on just anyone, so I think they will be patient---as I said, why rush when everything is going much better than anybody could have anticipated? In terms of the contraction in Xfinity and Trucks (I haven't counted, but I will take your word for it), TRD is only interested in getting rides for their Driver Development kids. Period. Otherwise, they would have dumped the Trucks for the spec crap, and the composite bodies aren't thrilling for them either.

Why expand? They've got a really good thing going and frankly what has worked out to be a good strategy: focus on basically one team and funnel your entire budget into them versus Ford and Chevy getting spread a little thin. They can focus on JGR (and the occasional "satellite" that is basically JGR) and pretty much whip everyone. The obvious downside is what we're discussing in that there's no room at the Inn for young talent, but it is what it is. I personally think that TRD has given Jones a fair shot, and for whatever reason he hasn't lived up to the hype. They're not going to let Bell get away, so he'll get the 20. The real question is if Bell is that good, or if he's maximized his opportunities in what are the best rides (by far) in the lower series.

They have to expand to get room for their drivers that they are developing. Jones isn’t going anywhere. Bell will take the 95 with increased JGR & TRD support IMO. I think that if TRD could land a team that doesn’t need an affiliate, that would be ideal. I also feel that the lack of friends at the 500 is a motivation. The 500 is a huge deal (as it should be) to TRD. Every TRD associate got a ring last week for this year’s win—a win BTW with an assist from Hendrick. To your point, however, and as I have mentioned, this year has been an epic year so far for TRD/Toyota. While their focus will always be on quality & not quantity, I do think there will be opportunity....

I think so too, and it sucks. Hoping for a second car with increased support for both..
