Silly Season 2020

Ganassi would be less of a blow than some of the other upper tier organizations such as RFR and RCR IMO. Not saying I'm a fan of that happening but they don't build engines inhouse.

Bob Leavine is not at all happy with the charter system and his comments surely make it seem like LFR could be the team...

If it is Ganassi, and Larson becomes a free agent due to CGR shutting down, that’s going to be a huge Free Agent frenzy. Also, is Felix Sabates is still involved with CGR? That’d be a shame to lose him, he’s been in the sport I think as long as I’ve been alive.

Interesting how another organization involved with Rob Kauffman is close to stopping operations... I mean, if its really gotten to that point for CGR.

Remember, not long after MWR closed he became an investor into CGR.

I can't think of any "front running" teams besides Roush & CGR. RCR seems fine.

I thought Kauffman was going to save all these teams with the charter system?

Correction: MWR closed BECAUSE Kauffman decided to take his money to CGR.

Canary in the Coal Mine

This was a tough week for this reporter because I heard a whopper of a rumor about a major NASCAR team planning to shut down their operation for next season. While this information came from a usually reliable source I have known inside NASCAR for many years, I refuse to make huge waves based on one single rumor.

While I didn’t want to contact the team mentioned in the rumor yet, I did make a few other calls with my reliable sources within NASCAR and tap-danced around the issue without hearing anything close to a second source for the rumor. But if a Charter-owning team that runs up toward the front of the pack in NASCAR’s Cup Series is thinking about leaving at the end of the year, this move would be a major “Canary in the Coal Mine” for NASCAR.
I'd suggest pumping the brakes on this flaky rumor. I'm not proclaiming it false, but I am suggesting a degree of intelligent thought should be applied.

I've never heard of Dennis Michelsen, and I think I know why. He doesn't want to "make waves" by checking out his story, so he publishes it without checking! That is acceptable journalism? No, it's not. He called someone else, tap-danced around without asking the right questions, got no hint of confirmation... so BOOM, let's publish. C'mon guys.

As a journalism major at one point, I would not dismiss any of these rumors. They won't turn out 100% fact but some have some truth hid somewhere.

"According to AR1.com sources, Roush Fenway Racing (RFR) just sold their race team buildings and property in Concord, NC to Amazon. Amazon owns a large distribution warehouse next to the RFR race shop.

We are told they are in the red. They sold the property, pocketed the cash from the sale and are now paying Amazon to lease back their own facilities.

Speculation is that it’s just a desperate ploy to keep the lights on and that Roush is circling the drain."

Roush Fenway Racing sells out to Amazon (at http://www.autoracing1.com/rumors.asp?tid=34715 )

Sure seems like Acorns/Oscar Meyer/Wyndham Rewards has been on the car a lot. I'll have to go check how many have been Roush Performance.

I've been rooting for Newman to make it myself since everybody complains he races hard.
The way he races has made New3my favorite MENCS driver after Junior retired.
I think he is signed with Roush through 2021.
Would be awful to see him without a ride if Roush shuts down.

I don't know if they're spending more on the 6 but Ryan has turned a 23rd-25th place car into a top 15 car most weeks. Even Matt wasn't producing this well consistently even if he had a couple good runs.

And Top 15 is actually underperforming compared to where he usually runs late race! Somehow he's putting that piece of junk in the top 10 or even 5.

The charters aren't supposed to save teams, it's to give them some return on their investment if they close.
And make it easier for teams to get sponsorship because they have a guaranteed starting spot for every race.

Sorry but I haven't seen one positive thing about a charter yet. There appears to be more of a supply than demand for them. Only thing it's done is make it nearly impossible to compete in the sport from an economic standpoint without one.

I don't know that I put a ton of stock in any of this rumor, BUT, I think I would believe the Roush rumor before I would the Ganassi one. I also wonder if since Roush is fielding just a fraction of the cars they used to if maybe they just had a great opportunity to sell off a facility that was more than they needed and that they would now move into a smaller one. Roush Fenway may not be setting the world on fire, but I don't buy the idea that they are in financial trouble. In 2017, Forbes estimated Henry's net worth at 2.6 billion, and Jack isn't a pauper either.

Yeah you made a great observation there, teams sell stuff constantly and it might of been a better investment to lease what they needed than to own what they don't. After all they sold to Amazon and I'm sure they paid high dollar for their property!

You think he will find a way out of Toyota? Bob Levine said a second car isn't looking so hot right now. Either Matt D is gone after this year or Bell is in the 95 come next season. I think Levine likes Matt D, so I'm not sure at all. Just more interesting speculation for us all.
It's really interesting. Knowing how things work, Seems like there would be smoke if Toyota was building another team and there isn't so far, Levine is a long way from a Barney, or they might do a hatchet job at Gibbs to make room for him there. OR they might want him to stay in the Xfinity series (job). On the other side you have the field. I bet he is getting offers from other teams also. I think Bell knows how to play the game, he has been keeping his mouth shut to the press. About the only thing I can guess about is that the odds are low that he would do another year in the Xfinity series. So that leaves a seat at Gibbs, or driving for a team somewhere else. It could change if the yoters decide to start another team. I personally don't think throwing money at Levine is happening unless we start to see all of these talented guys getting hired there.

Maybe get Kurt in a Toyota cup car after all. After all he did win in a KDB car when Kyle couldn't.

I see what you did there :p. In all seriousness though I’d love to see Kurt in a Toyota, I think Gannassi is lower on the Chevy totem pole and a manufacturer change would do them good

It sure didn't hurt Joe Gibbs to make the switch. However I think JGR holds the same position with Toyota as HMS does with GM and Jack did with Ford. Ganassi may not be any better off under JGR than he is under HMS.
He may do better under Penski but that is not an option. LOL

I personally think they are just fine staying right where they are. Until the development of Camaro threw all of the Chevy teams off, CGR was arguably almost on par with HMS. Now that they have Kurt Busch in place of Jamie McMurray - right alongside Kyle Larson, no less - I think they can make serious inroads towards getting that elusive Cup, and give HMS a little more competition for the spot of top Chevy team.

anybody looking to switch to Toyota needs their heads examined right now. Forgot Barney already? And how is their replacement doing over there at Leavine? Does anybody think it is just a driver problem over there?
Exactly. Five Camries versus double-digit hordes of the other brands... hmm, now I wonder why?
